Why Do Many African Americans Call Each Other ****** Or *****

Why do African-Americans call each other *****? But pissed when someone white says *****.?

alright people listen up..i've read a couple of the responses to this question and i came to this conclusion. the word "******" only has negitive meaning because we give it this meaning, not to say it is ever accepable to use this word for it's originally intended purpose(to degrade, insult and characterize based on skin color)it's not "your" word if your black just like cracker isn't a white people only word. THEY ARE JUST WORDS and until our society can get passed these words of ignorance there will always be problems with race. i'm a "******" & a "cracker" and so are all of us. so i urge all of you to quit using these old words and lets think of a word that discribes us all...
.....maybe something like "human"

P.S. I think its real funny that the word ****** won't show up on the board but "cracker" will.(thats a double standard)

Why do African Americans call each other "brother" and "sister"?

1. Due to the common past experiences that we've shared.

2. Soldiers and fighters in the military usually refer to one another as "comrades in arms" or "brothers" because they are fighting together against common problems and they feel like the other person has their back. Black men and black women feel the same way about one another.

3. It's a way for us to show that we're united.

4. A sign of friendship or respect (when the person does something that you like)

5. A way for us to connect with one another since many Black Americans don't have a different language that separates them from other groups. Caribbean Americans often do the same thing for the same reasons. My family is from Jamaica and we live in a mixed Caribbean and Black American neighborhood and we all call one another "brothers" and "sisters."

It makes us feel closer to one another and also helps the other person to feel like they aren't alone.

Why are African Americans offended by the N word?

because it is a word filled with hate and a history of hate.

Why do most Black people call themselves African American?

I know many , many black Americans, None of whom have ever set one foot on Africa. I doesn't hear Mexicans calling themselves Mexican Americans, nor do I her White People calling themselves White - Americans. Latino-Americans, Jewish Americans, Christian Americans, Athiest Americans exc are all non existant in the media and mainstream America. I do know atleast three people from Africa, tht actualy were born and lived there. None of which Identify with the label of African-American. I just call myself an American. no lable. what's with this ____ - American crap?

Not to be racist about african americans but why do they...?

whites do it too sometimes. how many polish jokes have you heard FROM polish people, lol

Why do we call people African Americans instead of just Africans or Americans? Why don't we say Asian Americans? British Americans?

I think terms make a HUGE impact on how people are perceived. Our pc culture tried to find a way to make people of all cultures and backgrounds feel included in Americaness. I think this backfired because Whites are defaulted as authentic Americans whether they had ancestors on the Mayflower or his or her parents came from Europe. I have never heard anyone call themselves English-American. Some just refer to themselves as English but others as simply Americans as in they don't have ties to any other country. I think calling someone a blank-American has a way of dividing their Americanhood. Even Indians are partial Americans. The one group you think of when the term American is used is Whites. How odd does European-American sound? President Obama is referred to as half white half African-American or having a Black/African/Kennyan father and an American mother. Had his dad been a US born Black he would have had an African-American father.I find it ironic how we Americans have knack of mislabeling things when we try to be precise. Christopher Columbus thought this was India and the people were therefore Indians. 500+ years later we need additional clarification to determine what kind of Indian someones is referring to. We are Americans in the sense that our country is part of the Americas. Brazilians are also Americans for the same reason and Brazilian-American would be as redundant as calling someone a French-European. Add to that how Africa includes both Black and non-Black populations you can have a Moroccan descendant person who would technically be just as African-American as a Nigerian descendant person would. In Britain an Asian is usually a person from India or Pakistan and Koreans are East Asian to demonstrate the difference. Here in the United States of the Americas an Asian is usually a Chinese or Japanese person but an Indian is a South Asian. Blacks in the US are called African-Americans because there has to be a term to define them. Calling them American is seen as a way of referring them as being from the United States as oppose to say Central America, the African part is used to refer to them as having ancestry from Africa but realistically just the Sub-Saharan portion. The rest of the details weren't thought through when the term was coined which makes it VERY American indeed.
