Why Do Many People Think Africa Is A Country

Why do people think AFRICA is a COUNTRY?

It really gets on my nerves. Why can't people get through their heads that its a CONTINENT. There are many successful African countries like South Africa and Egypt. Why do people link all of AFRICA together?

What causes people to think Africa a country?

As a former geography and history teacher, I will tell you it’s because they don’t teach social studies at a young age. They could teach children about the different countries of Latin America, Africa, and Asia. It’s about promoted ignorance by the politicians who don’t consider it a priority that they care for the majority of the country. A friend of mine once said she lived in Korea, and she was asked “I guess you can speak Asian?” I think more states need to teach about geography at a younger age. There’s no excuse for such ignorance. I don’t blame the people who don’t know, but we have to demand that our education system change for the better.

Why do people think that Brazil is a black country and is in Africa?

They do?Never heard of that. But thats ok, after all, some brazilians think that of Jamaica too.I believe this is because we have the largest population of black people outside Africa, Salvador:Salvador, Brazil the largest Black majority city outside AfricaIf just saw a bunch of these kind of picture yer after year after year, heard some braizilian music, wich has a lot of percussion, and know Pelé, Ronaldinho and Anderson Silva, where would you put Brazil? Europe, Asia, Africa or America?Chances are that America and Africa have a really good chance of being right, so, it is ok.

Why do some people think Asia is a country?

people can be dumb sometimes

Why do many people have a misconception that Africa is a country?

It is mainly an American thing just like people in Europe say Asians (Kabul to Rangoon) Chinese ( Myanmar to Japan). A lot of Australians say they going to Europe as if its a single place ( it is no or few boarders, mostly the same currency). The African bizzo is driven by four factors:1. The Macator projection of the world map shrinks Africa by 30% and makes Europe Russia and North America bigger so people dont know how big it really is, it doesnt loom large.2. The politics of complexity in a post civil war then post civil rights America saw people of colour looking for a common identity to united their common and uncommon experience of having part or wholly African roots. The convenience to white America of saying they are not us. Being able to ignore the inconvenient DNA evidence which shows most black people share white DNA. The implications of sexual relations which racists cant abide by and the apologists for slavery on the right wish to magic away, was handy.3. The left agenda or the ease of blame storming capitalism, the patriarchy, imperialism etc makes for a lazy angry answer to just about anything and ignores the complexity of Africa for a romantic ideal which sees, Christian Ibo farming people holding hands with Muslim semi nomadic Fulani cattle herders in a pastoral paradise that does not exist in Africa.4. The advantage of being able to reduce a whole continent to Africa for the media cant be ignored and the advantage for corrupt African leaders to hide behind the non specific term Africa as a badge of disadvantage when it suites means that it persists. The good news people in Africa are getting on with life and are not effected by this on a day to day basis, ignorant outsiders are just missing out on the good things about Africa like knowing if you love rice choose a Nigerian cafe, if you want lentils go Ethiopian, spicy chicken Mozambique, dried fish any of the great lakes, Zambia to Zimbabwe and Malawi, wrestling West Africa Senegal, football, every where, global writers then try west Africa, South Africa.

Why do some Americans think that Africa is a country? Didn't they do basic geography at school?

Well the answer is “No” because geography isn’t taught much anymore. According to this 2015 US News article https://www.usnews.com/news/arti... only 17 states require geography to be taught and only 10 make it a required class for graduation. The article points to a government study that found more than half of social studies teachers spend less than 10% of their subject time on geography.Although one could argue that the size of America and its importance in world affairs make it less important for Americans to know geography than other countries, I personally don’t buy that excuse. Geography is one of those fundamental concepts that defines the world an not knowing it is downright dangerous.Geography explains why the Middle East is a mess. Geography explains why North Korea gets away with lobbing missiles over Japan. Geography explains why Europeans don’t relate well to Americans and Americans don’t get the Europeans.I believe that geography should be taught at all grades K-12 as well as pushed by parents. There shouldn’t be any excuses for the failure for Americans not knowing about the rest of the world.

Why do most Americans think Africa is a country?

They don’t.Most Americans understand that Africa is a content comprised of numerous countries. We are taught this in primary school and may also learn about Africa from our parents.I’m sure it is possible that there are some Americans who don’t know this, but they would be in the minority.9 Stereotypes All Americans Hate

Why do Americans and Europeans think Africa is one country?

My mother suggests that at least 50% of Americans think that Africa is a country. I really refused to believe that, but then one day I was telling someone that I was going to Uganda, and they asked me if where I was going was anywhere near the school that Oprah built. I was like... hold up... What? I spent the next 20 minutes showing her the map of Africa. She had NO idea there were different countries in there. In fact, none of the 3 women in the office did. These are what I would call typical American women with high school diploma and some college. The last time I had a geography class was in 6th grade (10 years old). We did talk about Africa, but one of the only things I remember about those lessons was that the teacher made sure we all knew how to pronounce Niger correctly (LOL) and there was a huge focus on Egypt. After that, I never took a geography class, and most of the history classes I took were about the Western World (except AP World History, where Milton Obote was briefly mentioned in the textbook, which I got really excited about since I'm of Ugandan descent).Anyway, I think it's very possible to go through the entire American public school experience without any real substantive mention of the different countries in Africa. And that's why.

Why do people think "Africa" is all jungles and naked people walking around?

It annoys me more and more especially when people think that its a country, its a CONTINENT and a very diverse one I might add. North Africa has amazing countries like egypt and morroco and tunisia < where i live and it borders on the medditerannean sea, beautiful houses that are built so much better than the ones in the U.S in that they can withstand storms etc and all look like mansions. Tunis, the capital of Tunisia (like many african capitals) is VERY developed and we have everything found in any major city in the world including expensive cars and all the latest fashions and europeans, asians, australians live there and all get along just fine. Most people in Africa speak 3 languages or more including french or portugeuse or something of the sort and YES there are rural areas with tribes etc but there are also modern cities and great beaches and beautiful diverse countries.

I get so frustrated when people associate Africa with lions, the savana,
