Why Do My Jeans Stink When I Iron Them

Why when ironing my jeans do they smell even though they have been washed? Ideas/solutions?

The jeans may have gone through the laundry, but may still have hidden odors trapped in them that come up with the heat and moisture of your iron. Try a product called 20 Mule Team Borax in the water to sanitize your laundry. Let the jeans soak in that solution for a while the first time, before adding the detergent. Then add a bit each time you do laundry.

Can I dry damp jeans with an iron?

That will help a little but it wont completely dry them....what I do when Im in a crunch for time or cant get to a dryer is: hang them up and turn the fan on and let it blow on them on one side for about 30 minutes. Then turn them around to the other side and let the fan blow on that side for another 30 minutes. That should do the trick.

Can i use a hair straightener to iron my jeans?

Ahahahahahaha.
I've actually done this.
It does work
Although it doesnt reach some places easily because of the shape.
You may have to get it all at different angles.
But yeah, it may be bad for the clothes but i do it when Im in a rush and i need to get out wrinkles.
Do it lightly and it doesnt hurt

Why do my jeans smell?

Ok, so I realize this is a weird question, but I need help!
I'm a college student who sits in lecture classes every day for upwards of two hours.
Whenever I uncross my legs or stand up, I often smell a strong, weird, moldy/metallic-y smell coming from my jeans. This does not happen at all when I'm wearing yoga/cotton pants, only when I'm wearing jeans. (I have about 5 pairs that I wear on a regular basis.)
I wash my jeans almost every time I wear them, so this is not due to filth.
I'm pretty sure it's not BO, as I shower once (sometimes twice) a day, maintain good hygiene.
Anyways, this is super embarrassing. My friend's haven't commented but I'm sure they can smell it sometimes.
What could the cause of this be & how can I fix it?!
Thank you!

How to avoid IRON SHINE..plz help?

As suggested, you are using far too hot a setting. Are you using any type of spray starch or starch when washing? That ca also give you shine when ironing. If your iron doesn't change temperatures and stays very hot, the thermostat is broken and you need a new iron. How much fabric softener are you using? Most people use way too much fabric softener. If you can smell it when you clothes are nowhere near your nose, you've used too much. The oil in fabric softener can react with the heat of an iron and give you a shine. You can use a pressing cloth when you iron, A square of pure cotton fabric that's placed between the item ironed and the iron --that's what tailors and dressmakers use when they need to use high heat but they don't want to scorch fabrics. Simply use a square from a cotton bed sheet or buy a press cloth from a fabric store, they sometimes carry press cloths in the notions department. Does your iron have a teflon or coated soleplate or is it an old bare metal soleplate? If your iron is old and uncoated metal, you might want to invest in a new iron with a good teflon or coated soleplate. These allow the iron to glide and they provide a bit of protection from shine. If you iron is still reasonably new, invest in a teflon "shoe" a plate that covers the sole plate and prevents scorching. These are available at sewing machine stores and fabric and notions stores and on line from sewing and sewing notion stores. If you live in Canada they are available at Canadian Tire, and at Linens and Things and I think at the Bay.

Why does slightly wet clothes start to stink when they are ironed?

If they stink it means you have left them wet for too long or they were not washed very good. Clean clothes that are ironed right before they are completely dry right after washing should smell fresh and clean. Never let clothes sit around wet. Bacteria will start to grow within a few hours which will cause mold and the stink.

How can I get a smell out of new jeans?

Borax (approx. $4) will get the odor out of most anything. Once I dried a blanket not realizing the dog smell did not wash out. When I pulled it out of the dryer it smelled horrible. I thought I was going to have to toss it. I asked around and was told to try borax. Wow! It was amazing! All you need to do is add 1/2 cup to your wash. It works in both front and top loading machines. Although my clothes seldom have odors I use it in every wash. My clothes smell amazing. Hope this helps!

Why do my jeans smell like the beach? I got a new pair of black jeans from Target and after wearing them for the first time I was smelling a salty beach scent all day. After washing them, the smell didn't go away, and made my other jeans smell too.

That odor you smell is the chemicals used in the dye… and it will not fade away.Wash them several times with vinegar and dry them outside if you can it will reduce but not illuminate that filthy odor. Don’t wash them with any of your other clothing because that order will transfer it right into your freshly laundered clothes. Here’s what I do: when I buy new jeans I bring them home and I iron them with steam. If I smell that order those jeans go right back to the store because I don’t want it on my body and I don’t wanted in my house. wash them several times with vinegar and dry them outside if you can it will reduce but not illuminate that filthy odor. Don’t wash them with any of your other clothing because that order will transfer right into your freshly laundered clothes. Here’s what I do: when I buy new jeans?I bring them home , I leave all the tags and tickets on them, and I iron them with lots of steam….If I smell that odor ? Why does my new pair of American Eagle jeans smell like chemicals?

If it is an unwashed pair you are smelling several things. First off, the dye used to color the jeans. You may also be smelling formaldehyde which is used to prolong the life of the cloth while it’s in storage, and to discourage insects like moths from damaging the cloth. There is also the fact that cotton is an plant based material and can often have smells from the pesticides used on it and the fact that it gives off its own scent unless it was bleached prior to weaving.Summer time in a cutting room? The formaldehyde can make your eyes sting, or at least make your nasal passages rise up in rebellion depending on the manufacturer of the cloth. Cutting open the plastic bag that the rolls are often wrapped in can be an adventure in aromatherapy!

When researching I found super science terms trying to explain: hydroxy-polycarboxylic acids, aminomethyl phosphonate, and sodium polyphosphates, and reducing agents such as sodium bisulfite and hydrosulfite. I have no idea what most of these words mean.Really it comes down to this, black jeans have been dyed, dyed again and yet died again, just to be black.
