Why Do Parakeets Have To Be The Loudest In The Room

Do parakeets "talk" a lot?

Hi,

Parakeets are such wonderful birds. They can talk but not like cockatiels or parrots they have a very low voice you cant understand much of what they say. Here's a video of a parakeet chirping

They dont sing or chirp much unless they have company. Or if they hear other birds chirping. But they arent really loud they are great pets.

Good luck

Do u know why parakeets make alot of noise cuz my mom has one and its really loud when music or the t.v. is on

You know how cats and dogs pee to mark their territory? Well, birds use sound. They chirp, tweet, sing and generally let all other birds know, "I'm here, this is my spot". The sound, volume and duration of the sound all say different things to different birds.
The parakeet hears the music and thinks another bird is invading it's territory. He sings louder trying to scare off this strange bird that's trying to move in and take his place.
Put him in another room when the radio is on. We would put our birds out on our covered porch when we had the radio on, it seemed to help.

Why are parakeets so loud?

I've had parakeets for over 10 years. They are never quiet. :) That's just the nature of parakeets. They like to be the loudest noise around, they LOVE joining in on noise. If they hear a TV or people talking, they have to compete. That's just the way they are. They're energetic birds and love being an active part of a flock, where they can communicate and bop beaks and jump all over the place. Truthfully, there isn't anything you can do to quiet them down.

Putting a sheet over their cage isn't a good idea, except at night if necessary. They need air and daylight to be healthy. You can try closing their cage in another room and closing the door if you need quiet, but that's only a temporary solution. I've learned to love their squawking and chirping because it tells me they are healthy and happy to be alive!

EDIT*** I'm adding something here because you asked a second question in your comments. It might be better to post your "keep their nails trimmed" question as a new one. Those sandpaper perch covers are hard on birds' feet. They aren't a good idea. I have a concrete perch (Polly's) in each of the cages. I put it in a place where they have to step on it to get to their food or water. It helps keep their nails trimmed very well!! Also remember to have different size perches in the cage, for foot health. You can get a manzanita perch, the comfy cotton perch, and make sure the perches have different diameters so they are opening and closing their feet according to the size of the perch. That will exercize them and prevent foot problems. It also helps the nails to have a larger diameter perch.

Are parakeets noisy,or smell?

Parakeets are not stinky, even when the cage gets dirty. Few birds are. However, they are messy; they throw seed shells and feathers out of the cage. They poop on things if you let them out. Of course, that's easy to clean up.
Compared to larger parrots, parakeets are not noisy at all. If you have several of them, their chattering can get a little bit loud, but still not like a bigger parrot. When a parakeet wants your attention, it can call you with a loud chirp. Mine tells me when she's out of food or water, or wants out of the cage. But I wouldn't call her noisy. They don't have that big a voice.

My parakeet chirps so loud that it's hurting my ears. Any idea what to do?

He definitely could be calling to the female. Is there anywhere else you can put his cage? If he's new and still in his month-long quarantine (which I'm guessing might be the case, since you're trying to tame him, but I don't know), then move him downstairs with the female once the quarantine is up, and in the meantime, try to make a space for him at least somewhere further from your desk. You can bond with him without having to be that close to him all the time; you still gotta spend a lot of time with him, but you can take breaks (which actually is important because you never want a bird to be completely reliant on your attention for its enjoyment).

If he's chirping in the morning, then a darker cage cover at night will help because he won't see that it's daytime until later. When my cockatiel was being quarantined two rooms down from my room, his cover was a white sheet, so he saw the sunlight from the window and would wake me up before I wanted to. After moving into my room, I gave him a dark blue cover that he can't see through to prevent night frights, and not only has that been working great so far, but it also has the added bonus of him not wanting to be very loud in the morning.

Some people suggest covering the bird even in the daytime to get him to be quieter, but you don't want to make a habit of that because he will get confused and even mess up his internal clock if you do it a lot.

Does loud noises (like TV) affect a parakeet's ability to sleep?

Regular volume no,anything louder,or sudden loud noise can stress a Parakeet.

I want to know everything about a parakeets pros and cons?

I will never again make a mistake of buying a pet without knowing about it better. I need to know mostly cons.

Such as:

Do parakeets have possessive issues to the point of attacking others( aka my friends).
Can they be really loud. ( I need specifics)
Are they known to squawk when you leave the room. ( I cannot stand when I want to cook and have to leave my bird in the room and he goes crazy because he's alone. Cannot deal with it. I need to be able to leave him alone sometimes without him freaking out or something, other times he will be with me allllll the time. )
ect ect.

I don't plan on getting two because it seems they are louder together and I also would like him to be more involved with me. During school I work though so tell me if he/she will be able to cope with this. as soon as I get home I will have time with him though.

EXTRA: Are parakeets able to be taught any tricks? just curious.
What are good diets for them, like, good brands that I should get him/her on as soon as I decide to get him. ( If I do.)
Where should I obtain my bird?
How old should I get the bird.
Boy or girl. Which may I prefer.
Would I really be able to cope with two birds?? (Be critical on this question.Please.)

Also: I do not need general stuff. I know how to deal with biting and I have a huge cage with toys and blah. I also have money so that won't be a problem.
Please do not be overly generous about your answers, If this bird may have problems that I might not be able to deal with, I want to know about them honestly.
Thank you to all who answer.
