Why Do People Buy Bottled Water

Why do people buy bottled water?

My husband works for the water company and says our tap water is filtered and safe for drinking.
So why do we still buy bottled water, I see almost everyone walking with a bottle in their hand, when I am shopping some stores even sell it at the counters. Who is making the real money here? I understand that the "Nestle Company" is taking water from the "Great Lakes". It's a scary thing when you think about it, whoever has the water has the power? what really is going on in our country, anyone have an idea?? Figi water sold here? what do the Figi citizens have to say about their water being taken and sold here in the US??

Why are so many people buying bottled water when they could easily store tap water for emergency disasters?

You’ve gotten several answers, which made some individual good points.Reliability. Purchased bottled water is ‘stores’ better than water you bottle yourself. Plus, you don’t have to find and clean containers.Cost. It’s not that expensive. In my area, tap water is about $0.02/gallon. But if I purchase a gallon container, that’s more than a $1. And if I use a milk jug, I have to double rinse, sterilize with bleach, and double rinse again.Costco sells a 6 gallon pack of bottled water for $3.89 or $0.65/gallon, which is much more expensive, as water, but not expensive as water-in-a-container.Taste. Unless you buy Nalgenes, many plastic containers will add plastic ‘taste’ to the water over time. Milk jugs won’t, but if you mess up even slightly, you’ll either taste rotten milk or excess bleach. The thin PET used in water bottles is long lasting and taste free. (Whether there are taste-less hazardous leachates in the water from the PET is debated.)Convenience. Need to stock up for a week for 4 people — go to Costco and buy 7 x 4 gallons, rounded up to 30 ( 5 x 6-pack = ~$20) put them in your garage, and you’re done. For many people, $20 is cheap enough, so that easy is a good enough reason!

Why do you buy bottled water?

I was thinking about this the other day, I usually buy it for the bottle itself. Bottled water and tap water have a marginal difference in taste and quality according to me (in most developed countries) - a 1.75$ 500 ml  bottle of water can be used around 10 times on average before it wears out, so every time you use it you spend around 18 cents, which is a fair cost to put on the convenience of having water on you immediately. However,  buying a 15$ water filtered bottle will last you around 100 fills before the filter becomes useless, (15 cents per use)

Why do people buy bottled water if they could drink tap water almost for free?

Sometimes people use bottled water because they are stupid and don't know any better. But sometimes it's a matter of convenience. If I'm out running errands and I'm thirsty, I don't have access to tap water to drink while I'm driving my car. I DO occasionally buy bottled water when out and about, or on a road trip. I don't bring bottled water home though, because there's nothing wrong with tap water.

A lot of people are paranoid about tap water, both because many people tend to be stupid and paranoid in general, and because the bottled/filtered water companies have been doing their marketing. But seems like every time it's been tested, tap water is just as clean if not better than bottled water (which in many cases is simply some city's tap water anyway).

Why do people buy expensive bottled water?

I watched a special and they performed some lab tests on some expensive bottled water and found out that some those brands had more contaminants then standard tap water. Why do people continue to purchase water that is worse then city water.

Why do people buy "Smart Water" or "Fiji" bottled water?

Fiji water for $2.50?!
I pay 70 cents a bottle for it in Australia and Aussie food prices are normally considerably higher than they are most other places in the world!
For someone who drinks a lot of water, there is a definite difference in the taste between brands. I find Fiji sweeter than Mount Franklin which is the most popular brand here. As I drink predominantly water I can pick up the taste difference between brands.

It's a bit like how a heavy coke drinker can tell immediately if their drink has been swapped out for pepsi. I don't generally drink cola drinks and actually have trouble telling the difference between the two!

Why do people buy bottled water at Starbucks when you can get ice water for free?

As a former Starbucks employee I can say there are a few different reasons someone prefers to get a bottled water over free ice water. Some people either are unaware or skeptical that the tap water at Starbucks is filtered. Most people, at least in the United States are lead to believe that typical tap water is unsafe to drink… and in some places they are correct.Other people feel they are being judged for carrying around a plastic cup with water in it. They don't want people to make assumptions that they are too broke to buy a beverage. The main group of water drinkers who buy water rather than order tap water is they feel slightly superior. They can carry their Ethos water around making a statement, “ I am health conscience, I have money, I donate to worthy causes, I am cool.” These people try to convince themselves that buying Ethos water makes them special. What they don't realize is most people are not paying attention to what someone else is drinking.

Why do people buy bottled water when tap water is cheaper?

A mixture of one, two, or all three of the following reasons:Convenience — sometimes when you're heading out it's just easier to grab a bottle of water out of the fridge instead of taking the time to put some ice and water into a travel mug.Access — if you're at a location that only sells bottled water and you want some water then this is your only choice.Hype — some people believe there's something special about bottled water, that it tastes better or it's safer or it's better for you. Taste preferences aside, there is virtually no difference. Most professional analyses actually give tap water a slight edge when it comes to safety. You may find this analysis of bottled water interesting:
