Why Do People Care So Much About Celebrities

Why do people care so much about celebrity's lives?

I've always wondered the same. I've never hopped on the bandwagon of reality TV, gossip magazines, etc (though I am a guy..) But I suppose in a way it's because it's an escape from one's own reality. Reading about the lives of others lets someone take a break from his/her own for a little while. But I think it's important to separate the life of a celebrity from his or her work..for example, Charles Manson was actually a musician before the crimes he committed..and to be perfectly honest, not a bad one at that. Sure, he's a horribly warped person and deserves to rot in jail, but hey..the man is pretty creative with music. I realize it's a pretty extreme example, but you get my point.

Why do we care so much about celebrities?

I read an interesting theory somewhere, it compared celebs to those popular kids back in our school days and drew many similarities from the two, such as how almost everyone pays attention to what they say and do, and almost everyone would die for a chance to become one of them.
It makes sense I suppose, it takes hard work to become famous and make it to the top, so people tend to see that as successful and want to be like them.

So I guess it's just in our human nature. And evolution-wise, gossiping helps with better survival because it gives us a sense of who is friendly and who is not, who to get close to and who to stay away from in traditionally small communities (like school, but not so much in the celeb world as I doubt we'll ever meet them face-to-face).

Another thing is, I suppose talking about celebrities gives us a common subject at parties and gathering, as opposed to having nothing in common to talk about resulting in awkward silences.

Also, having favorite celebrities can also become part of our personality, and can be used to create bonds between other people who have the same interests. For example, fan groups can be great places to make friends and connect with other people who your passion. They can be used to satisfy our social needs. Humans are social creatures after all, if we lived in an isolated box, it wouldn't do us much good would it?

Just want to add, there is also a certain point when too much is too much. If someone's having their entire life revolved around celebrity gossip that they've forgotten how to live, then they should probably go into counselling.

Why do people care about celebrities so much-- do they not have any lives?

Sure, everyone has lives. I think the answer lies in the fact that people who don’t know each other and have no friends in common can talk about celebrities. It’s an opportunity to bond with someone you do not know. And it doesn’t matter if what you say is bad or good, or even if it’s true or not, because celebrities are not hurt by idle gossip like every day people are. In this respect it is so much better that we are talking about celebrities instead of every day people.

Why do people care about celebrities?

It doesn't sound like you genuinely want information about this -- you answered your own question perfectly well with your comment about high-status apes. It sounds like you're really asking: "Why do other people find it harder to resist this particular stone age impulse than I do?" Reasons you might read celebrity magazines: Your social circle is composed of boring and unattractive people, and you prefer the virtual company of celebrities. You don't have enough emotional connections in your life, and the stories of people you "know" through pop culture fill some of the gap. Some celebrities actually are way better looking and more talented than you, and you can boost your own social status by emulating them. You need to have something to talk about with people you don't know well, like fellow office workers or distant relatives, and Jennifer Aniston is a much safer topic than politics or religion. It's easy to sneer at readers of People or TMZ, but take a hard look in the mirror before you do. Do you play video games? Play or follow sports? Overindulge in fatty, sugary or salty foods? Go hunting? These are all leftover stone age behaviors that look just as ridiculous in the right light as reading celebrity gossip.

Why do we care about celebrities so much?

I just wanted to start a discussion of possible reasons we are interested in celebrities. There is no right or wrong answer. Why do you care about celebrities? Is it just for entertainment or is it more serious? Do you dream of meeting these people or are you fine with living your life without ever meeting them? Why are some people obsessed when others could care less? Let's talk.

Why do people care so much about celebrities and gossip?

It seems to be a disease that afflicts people these days, they would rather be aware of Jennifer Anistons broken nail or how Jordan is getting her hair done than know anything about the world they live in.

What also makes me laugh is that there are television programs showing you the opulence that the pharaohs and others lived in and these dim wits can't see how the great and the good of today that they idolise have pretty much a similar lifestyle, earning thousands of pounds for doing nothing with millions in the bank.

People need to aspire to something, but to a lifestyle of doing very little and living with the morals of dogs is not the answer. I see they now have "addicrted to sex" as a disease, seems to me they just have to much time and money and followers who will sell their body for 5 mins of fame.

If we are all judged at a day of reckoning, I would love to be there when Elton John explains why he wasted millions on trinkets when, millions starved, or to hear Bono explain along with Geldof how they used the misfortune of the meek to elevated themselves and how they gained more than they gave..

It is easy to avoid celeb gossip, keep away from tabloids and chat shows where the go and back slap each other.

Why do people care so much about the lives of celebrities? They're just people like us.

Do you want to know why?Celebrities are people like us, that’s true, but there’s a big difference between them and us, and it’s not the money. They do what they love and create their lifestyle around it.They do not let other tell them how they should live, they live life on their own terms. Some of them have been lucky enough to be in the right place, at the right moment or happen to know the right person, yes…But also some of them have worked their asses of to the top, and do you know why?Because they knew what they wanted and they just went for it. And they had the gust to say: I can do this.No matter what others said, no matter how hard it was, no matter the problems in the way, they just made a choice and didn’t stop till they got there. So, we, mortals, worship them, because we don’t think we have what it takes to be like them, so they’re some kind of gods for us.Actors, singers, athletes, CEOs, photographers, directors,… any famous people you see on TV…We admire them and follow them because we want to live their lives.A kind of life where you’re following your passion and making the most of the time you’re alive by doing what you really love. The only difference between us and them is that they were willing to do whatever it takes to reach their dreams, and we just watch them do it.

Why do people care so much about celebrities personal lives?

It's all about the gossip. It's almost taboo to gossip about people in my own life. They're my friends, family, coworkers. And there's always the possibility of it getting back to them. But with celebrities, it's an open window. They're out there in the public and they choose to be. There are celebrities who's personal lives we know nothing about, and then there are the ones that flaunt it, even their misery. It's great publicity for them, their name becomes a household name. Everyone knows who they are. I just saw in the last issue of People magazine where celebrities feed the paparazzi who follow them!! What can I say, my family, friends, and coworkers have boring, ordinary lives compared to celebrities.

Why do people care so much about celebrity gossips?

So why do people like to follow the lives of others on Instagram and YouTube?Because their lives might be less interesting (they might be from poorer country), they are “lost” in their lives and seek a role model. It's only natural to look for “nearly perfect” role models, like those fake bitches on Instagram and those talentless singers and actors.. because wherever you seek on the internet or TV, you see “perfect stories”. Perfect faces, good money and whatnot.Because real life is raw. What you see depicted on TV and internet and in the media is always just one side.In TV sitcoms and so forth, it's the ugly duckling on TV sitcoms who get lucky with (impossible girls)… which wouldn't happen in real life. So you want to identify yourself with such a loser (or such a great guy).
