Why Do People Enjoy Watch Sad Depressing Movies

How do I get over depression (sadness) when watching a sad movie?

Hi! Since you put this question under Psych and not entertainment, I'm thinking that you'd like a serious answer. So here goes:

It sounds as though you have a perhaps low-grade chronic depression that is aggravated by the sad, disturbing movies. I'll bet that sad songs give you the same tug. Instead of watching happy movies, why don't you discuss this with your doctor and see if maybe you could benefit from some talk therapy and/or medication that can get you on track for enjoyment of life and all its entertainment media.

Why do I get chills when I watch a sad/depressing movie?

Why do I get goosebumps when I watch something sad emotional and like I know something sad will come up in the movie and I get goosebumps then I would start tearing up while watching a depressing part of the film?

Sad, depressing movies?

So I'm really in the mood to watch some really depressing movies...and I mean movies that will make me cry and mope for days on end. Here's my list so far...

Somewhat Depressing:
The Notebook
The Mist
Titantic
Pearl Harbor
The Guardian
Phantom of the Opera

Depressing:
Se7en
Pay it Forward
Message in a Bottle (haven't seen it yet)
A Walk To Remember
My Sister's Keeper (haven't seen it yet)
Vertical Limit (haven't seen it yet)

Super Depressing Beyond All Reason:
Seven Pounds
The Butterfly Effect [Director's Cut]

I'd like some more suggestions...also feel free to rate movies on YOUR depressing movie factor. I want to watch the least depressing movies, to the most depressing.

Thank you.

After I watch any movie I get a sad and depressing feeling. Is it normal?

We all love to live in fantasy. When you watch the ending of a movie or a show which u loved the most, you come across the fact that the fantasy is now over and you have to get back to your not so exciting/adventurous life. It is just a feeling that twists your heart.  We want to live a life just like our favourite characters who ahieve everything and solve everything in the blink of an eye. There are different types of people, one type for whom it doesn't matter anything if everything goes on smoothly. And the other type who wants their life just like a fairy tale. Me and you probably belong to the second category and there is nothing wrong about it. once we stop watching fantasies and want to make something out of our life, you my friend may be the one who actually makes a difference. come out of that fantasy and make your life astounding. don't let your mind be idle. Dream and work to achieve it.P.S: I am still working on it. So i actually can't suggest you how to come out of it. But give it a try your way.

Why do people like sad movies?

I watched Atonement today... and it left me disturbed and depressed. I HATE SAD ENDINGS! Why do people like them?! I don't get it... it put me in a depressed mood all afternoon.

Why is it that people seem to enjoy sad movies, music, and stories, when they hate experiencing it themselves?

People expose themselves to sad things for a variety of different reasons. I too have suffered from depression for a great portion of my life, but I was able to obtain an understanding of my depression. You should take my word with a grain of salt since everything that I'm going to say here is from purely observation. From my experiences, depressed people like to watch sad movies, listen to sad music, etc. because they can relate to this sad element. They feel that someone actually understands them and that they're not alone. This feeling can be really soothing for some people. In fact ancient Greek tragedies were meant to disturb people to the point of desensitization according to Aristotle's theory of tragedy. So, in way, you can say sad movies or songs are designed to help ease depression.

I like sad, depressing movies. Is that good?

You might not believe it, but watching sad movies is actually normal amongst people and it also has been found out that sad movies make us feel happier. (Mind-blown!)There are two reasons. One reason is purely psychological. We see the suffering of the characters on-screen and compare it with our lives. The lack of suffering in our lives make us feel happier. And mind you, all of this takes place sub-conciously. This comparative self-reflection is also used in therapeutic sessions. XDNow, the second reason is purely neurochemical. Well, when we watch sad movies, oxytocin is released. Now, oxytocin is a chemical which makes us feel empathy towards others. Thus, the release of oxytocin enables you to care for others (on-screen characters, in this case) and form a bond with them. Also, after watching a sad movie, you might have the need to be hugged or kissed. This is purely normal, as the oxytocin enables you to form bonds with others. Its okay if your friends are dissing you for watching a sad movie. You are more empathic to humans than them. So, grab some popcorn and let those tears fall!! :)Update: I just finished watching the movie and I love it! You have a good taste.
