Why Do People Let Their Frozen And Refrigerated Food Spoil During Winter Storm Blackouts

Kitchenaid Side by Side Refrigerator not working after 1 minute power outage?

You know how they say if you turn off an air conditioner or refrigerator wait a few minutes before re-starting, this is to let the built up pressure in the system equilibrate so the compressor is not trying to start against a back pressure of gas.

When you say it is not getting cold, do you mean the compressor is not running, or do you mean it is running, but no coldness?

Possibly when the power was off for like one minute, when it came back on it was trying to start against residual pressure. Most compressors have a safety device that, if it tries to start against too high a pressure and stalls, it senses the prolonged over-current and trips. This device should re-set itself and try again as many times as necessary until the residual pressure equilibrates and it will start. Possibly the device in your frige has blown out and it is not re-seting. Let's hope it is this, because this is a relatively cheap part. Unfortunately, sometimes after a black out when the power comes back on, you get wierd voltage surges that sometimes randomly blow out expensive parts (like the compressor itself).

There is a very slight chance you have a problem with the defrost timer, but usually causes a gradual diminising of coldness, not suddenly like what you seem to have experienced.

If it turns out to be something expensive, check you home insurance, sometimes they actually cover wierd things like this.

Added, yes it usually sounds sort of like an air conditioner, but not as loud. When you turn the power on, do you hear a soft humm and a click and it stops, then after a few minutes it repeats? (This is a bad sign)

Added: one last thing, many of these compressors have a starting relay, it is usually located right on the compressor. it is a relay with a coil of just a few turns of quite heavy wire which is in series with the run winding of the compressor. It is designed so that the heavier current of a motor when starting turns the relay on, which activates the start winding; once it is running, the current is less and not enough to activate the relay and start winding goes off. Sometimes these go bad and it makes it appear that you have a jammed compressor, this is a relatively cheap and easily replaced part. Sometimes there is also a starting capacitor, if this goes bad it will also make it not turn on.

How long can you keep feta cheese unrefrigerated?

There are a several equally valid answers to this question. Keep in mind that Feta is always produced and stored in a salt brine, and salt is a natural preservative that helps retard spoilage. The first regards the cheese alone. Sitting out at room temperature, Feta cheese is safe for at least 6 hours. The time is longer than for other soft cheeses because of the salt content. It is more likely to get dried out and unappetizing rather than spoiling within 6 hours. The second regards the cheese immersed in its original brine in a sealed container. Feta cheese in its original brine is safe at room temperature for at least 24 hours. Unopened factory-sealed containers will last even longer. In an opened container there is more likelihood of bacteria, and if any portion of the feta is uncovered, it is likely to spoil quicker though. The obvious signs of spoilage would include mold on exposed cheese and an opalescent sheen on the surface of the brine. Feta is often shipped unrefrigerated in brine, manufacturers are comfortable with a 24–48 hour period in shipping without refrigeration; obviously that doesn’t mean you leave it sitting in the sun though. The third possibility is shelf-stable canning. Properly canned feta cheese stays good without refrigeration for a year or more. Canned feta is found often marinated or in stuffed olives. You can put a jar of either on your shelf and enjoy it next year with no problem.

How long can hummus be left out of the fridge and still be good to eat?

Federal guidelines recommend no food cooked or not, stay out longer than 4 hrs. It allows for bacteria to grow and 42 degrees for your fridge temp. 30 for the freezer. Our volunteer county organization the Medical Reserve Corps has quarterly classes on these types of things. The two classes I’ve taken, one was taught by the County lady who does the Food and Drug inspections for instutions ie: schools, nursing homes, etc. The first class was taught by THE State Restaurant Food Inspector. So yeah, I know what I’m talking about.
