Why Do People Like Horror Movies So Much

Why do people like horror movies?

I'm a huge horror movie fan. I've always loved them since I was a kid.

The appeal in horror movies lies in their excitement and danger. There's a real thrill in being thrilled. Some people enjoy being scared because it provides a surge of adrenaline (Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween). Others like to be disgusted or revolted because it challenges their appetite or their "strength" (Saw, Hostel, Night of the Living Dead, Dead Ringers). And others just like to experience disturbing events because it gives them an opportunity to peek into the world that no ones has ever returned from: lunacy (Shutter Island, Girl Interrupted).

Horror movies appeal to our fantasy-yearning side. We WANT to experience horror and thrill because it's an exciting experience that doesn't happen to us everyday, from the safety of our sofas. Today's society is too safe and too politically correct, so horror movies are a form of escapism.
But horror movies also appeal to our taboo side. We want to experience things that we're not allowed to experience otherwise in real life. Things like cannibalism, torture, mutilation, ingestion of the "unsavoury" etc. This is often known as "body horror" and appeals to our sense of disgust.

There is also a category of horror films that needs its own titles and that's supernatural horror. The reason why these have become so increasingly popular (The Exorcist, Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity, Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Amityville Horror) is because of the atmosphere they create. Supernatural horror is scary not because of what you see, but because of what you DON'T see. It's the possibility that there could be something life threatening that we can't even see.

At the end of the day, horror movies are all about the experience. We all watch them for different reasons, but it's always about the exciting experience.

Why do people like horror movies?

Like the ones with extreme mutilation and stuff like Saw 4?

Honestly I try to not associate with people who like that stuff, cause that to me says alot about what they secretly like and a little about what there all about.

I personally hate those movies. I find them not only disturbing, but disgusting. I just don't like seeing body parts all over the place and human mutilation, and I don't think watching it is natural.

Why do people watch horror movies?

First off, don't generalise horrror movies by shoving them all into one category, you can get crap ones and good ones, and great ones

1) The thrill
2) The excitment of being scared
3) Digging deep into the core of our deepest fears which will be confronted in this show of artistry and the macabre

Maybe the reason you don't like them, is because you are yet to face your fears

Why are there so few black people in horror movies?

Because in real life, most black people would survive a horror movie easily. Either by running away and leaving their children as decoys, or killing the killer, etc.Jokes aside, there aren't few black characters in horror movies. Many horror movies have black people in it. Very few just have blacks as the main cast.

Why do white people like to watch or make horror movies so much?

Have you ever seen Saw, Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Dracula, Frankenstein, Chucky, Jaws, Zombies films and other such things? It seems like white people seem to gravitate towards making and enjoying horror movies a lot. Why? What is it about a crazy guys that wear hockey masks with machetes or monsters that they like?

Why do you like horror movies?

I do like being scared, but more than that, I LOVE being kept on the edge of my seat (so to speak) in anticipation of what might happen next. Even if it's a movie that I've seen before, if it's a good one I'll still end up excited & ready to scream at whatever's around the next corner. It causes me to think: 'What would I do if I was in that exact same situation'--no matter how unrealistic the situation is. If the movie's good enough, you can pretty easily see yourself as the one who has to escape the evil killer that would otherwise rip you to pieces! Even with movies that aren't that good, there's a certain attraction to watch them (for me, at least) because you get to seem really smart & you get to-from a very safe distance (I hope it's safe, anyway)-ask some of the characters "how could you be so stupid" when they do dumb or obvious things that are obviously going to end up with them dead.

Why do some people enjoy horror and torture movies?

Shock.  We as a society like to see things that shock us.  It's why we used to watch executions on the square.  It's why crowds gathered for hangings.  It's why we slow down on the freeway to view that car accident.  It's why we watch those shocking videos on Youtube.  We loved to be shocked.  And what drives this is curiosity.  We are a very curious race.  We ask strange questions to ourselves in the dark of night.  "I wonder what it's like to rob a bank?""I wonder what it's like to kill someone?"  "I wonder what it's like to see someone tortured?"  "I wonder what it is like to be a serial killer?"These are dark questions that our curiosity within can't help but ask.  It's about our minds trying to make sense of it all.  Trying to figure out how such things can happen, why they happen, how they happen, and how we would feel if it happened to us.Thankfully, most of us have the moral compass to reject such notions and to reject taking such curiosity to dangerous and immoral levels.     With Saw, and other horror movies, we allow the filmmakers to present answers to such questions for us.  And we experience them in a moral manner without guilt because we know that in the end, it's all smoke and mirrors.  An illusion.  No one is really getting hurt.  And back in olden times, when public executions were a town, and sometimes family, event to witness, those citizens had detachment of guilt and shame because it was an authoritative action that they had no control over.      Our curiosity leads us to the thrill of being shocked.  That's why the Saw films are so successful.  That's why the horror genre is so impenetrable and has been since films like Nosferatu.  Beyond the ever present gore of the Saw franchise films, the added brilliance of them is not necessarily the end result of the physical and psychological torture, but the tension that is built in those moments before the character's eventual fate.  It's a thrill.  A shocking thrill that gets our adrenaline going.

Why do I hate horror movies?

Why do I hate horror movies? My question to you is, why are you asking this here?Really, everyone has different likes and dislikes for different reasons. I can’t begin to know why you like or hate something without actually knowing you, first. But, for the sake of an answer, here are a few possibilities…Horror is scary. Some people don’t like the feeling of being scared. They’re either sensitive to suspense, gore or frightful images, or they may have had an experience in their life that makes fantasy seem real.Horror is boring. Some people love RomComs. I simply despise them. They bore me, and I haven’t found one I’ve liked yet. My grandparents never watched horror, not because it frightened them, but because they simply weren’t interested. You simply haven’t found the type of horror you do like. There are number of sub-genres of horror, each with a different type of element. Creature features, ghost stories, slashers, aliens, body, thriller and many more. To make things even more complex, horror genres are often mixed with each other, AND even with other types of non horror, such as romance, drama, comedy, etc… You may yet find something you do like. You’ve simply told yourself you hate horror. Yeah, this happens. It’s like the kid I knew in grade school who said they didn’t like sugar (claiming they’d never tasted it). You haven’t really experienced a horror movie, or you’ve only seen one or more that were bad representations for you, so you’ve lumped the whole genre under your “hate” category.I don’t really know which one of the above fits the OP best, but I’m betting at least one hits the mark.
