Why Do People Support The Confederate Flag On Yahoo Answer

Why do people still support the confederate flag?

It's definitely a divisive symbol ... for many it's a symbol of Southern pride and heritage, sort of a modern-day rebellion, but to others it can't help but represent slavery and deeply-rooted racism. It also doesn't help that groups like the KKK and various skinheads have used it to decorate their uniforms and meeting places.

In the interest of free speech, I think people should feel free to have or display one, but they should think long and hard about what they're associating themselves with. To be fair, I think a lot of the young people flying the flag are associating it with benign stuff like the Dukes Of Hazzard or Lynyrd Skynyrd or whatever.

Why do people fly the Confederate flag?

Why would you defend a flag that represented the separation of the U.S?We are the UNITED States now, they were more like the Divided States during the civil war.In addition, you have to take into SERIOUS consideration the pain black Americans feel when they see that flag.We don't like it when illegal aliens fly their flags over the U.S. flag, then why do you have the right to flaunt yours in the face of Afro-Americans?I'd rather fly my American flag. Then they say it's,"Heritage not hate".Your heritage and mines is from Europe, not the South. You people must not see the faces of blacks when you fly that ridiculous flag: I see pain and confusion more often then anger. Why would you fly a Saudi Arabian flag in an American neighborhood after 9/11? Why would you fly a Nazi flag in a Jewish neighborhood knowing how the holocaust hurts them? That's just silly like flying a confederate flag today. Are you people just that insenstive? The Confederate flag represents division so why fly it?

Why do people still fly the Confederate Flag?

I live in Florid and I am a Senior in High school and many people fly the Confederate flag on there trucks, cars and in some neighborhoods it is just waving for everyone to see. I'm southern and I find it racist. I talked to my redneckish friend about it and he gave me a look like I was stupid and he told me that it represented Southern Pride and Tradition of southern people and I don't understand it. In school I learn it's racist, from family I hear it's racist and everyone says it's Tradition and Lifestyle. I don't get this. I know that the flag is protected by the Second Amendment but why do people fly this flag?

Do you support the displaying of the confederate flag?

Yes...... I support the freedom of expression that
is guaranteed by the constitution of the United States of America........

What does the confederate flag stand for??

It once stood for the Confederate States of America. Since the Confederate States no longer exist, the flag stands for the intentions of the waver of the flag.
Some people fly the flag to celebrate their heritage and honor their ancestors. Sadly, some fly the flag in support of racial intolerance and intimidation.
Some people fly the flag simply because they like the way it looks.
The flag has as many meanings as it has owners.

Why do people hate the Confederate Flag?

for something that happened almost 200yrs ago they need to get over it now! all the Hatred of the flag is opinion Not fact! It is The Southern Cross and thats what it was originally it never was used as the official confederate flag, because Texas's Flag was the CSA Flag and also a lot of Black people did fight under the confederate flag too! I also think that the NAACP is as Racist as you can get!

I don't think it's fair that black people can wear FUBU but white people can't wear the rebel flag. I think FUBU is just as racist as the rebel flag because it stands for "For Us, By Us." Even if the rebel flag does mean slavery, no black people right now are slaves, or ever will be. So how can they feel bad about it?

I don't want to wear the rebel flag because it's racist, but just like black people have pride in FUBU, I have pride in the rebel flag.

all opinions can be posted but my opinion is still the be

What's so bad about the Confederate Flag?

Because the Confederate flag is not a neutral symbol of "The South". It originated as a symbol of the Confederacy, which was a very specific vision of the South based on slavery and racial hierarchy. This was a vision which, even at the time, was rejected by millions of Southerners, both black and white. Flying the Confederate flag rejects not only the millions of black Southerners who opposed slavery, but the millions of white Southerners who opposed secession and disunion.

The modern use of the flag also shows that it's not a neutral symbol of Southern identity. The flag was resurrected after WWII by white Southerners who were anxious about African-Americans pushing for civil rights. They wanted to reassert their vision of the South was belonging exclusively to white people.

So the flag has never been some kind of neutral emblem of "the South". Instead it has always been, both in its original use and its resurrected form in the 20th century, a symbol of a racist vision of the South.

Why do some people fly Confederate flags while claiming to not be racist?

Very few people (even racists) want to admit to being racist these days. The human mind can twist and rationalize almost anything. You may have heard someone carrying a sign that says “God Hates Fags” but claiming that they are not homophobic.Contrary to what many “flag-flyers” (and all racists) would like us to believe, after 1960 the Virginian Army’s battle flag was taken up as a symbol of racist oppression (especially in the southern states). After the passage of the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act (which promoted equal rights for blacks)…southern states began to incorporate the “rebel” flag as part of their individual state flags, erect monuments to southern civil war leaders, and use the flag as a symbol of protest against racial equality and voting rights. This was also the era when they tried to convince the world that their secession (and the subsequent civil war) was about “states rights” and not “slavery”. In fact, the reason for their secession was listed in the documents in which they outlined their reason trying to leave the Union…it was that they were afraid that they would eventually lose their right to own slaves. Many symbolic items change their meanings…the swastika was once a symbol of good luck, blue was originally the color representing girl babies and healthy pink was for boys, Republicans originally supported emancipation of slaves but after the 1960’s supported the southern states rights to suppress black voting rights, belching smoke-stacks once were the symbol of a healthy economy, the Statue of Liberty was once seen as a welcoming torch for immigrants (your tired, your poor, your wretched masses yearning to be free)…today?…not so much.

Is the CONFEDERATE FLAG a racist symbol?

It can be considered racist, because the supports of the confederacy supported slavery.
