Why Do People Think Lighter Skin Means Prettier

Are people who think lighter skin is more beautiful than darker skin racist? What if the reasoning is that facial features are more defined with lighter skin? How do I stop thinking one is better than the other?I'm struggling to understand why people claim they don't know of any beautiful dark skinned women. And to think that the reason is that their facial features aren't well defined… No deal.Look, there's nothing wrong with having a bias. Some people prefer red heads, some prefer blonds. Some people even prefer dark skinned women. But to go out your way to make a public statement that dark skinned women can't be beautiful, is something that I find offensive. All I can do is present some pictures, and hope you look at them with an open mind.Dark skinned women come in all different shapes and sizes… And hues. But I don't have a hard time seeing any of their facial features. Now the thing to understand here is just because you don't see these women as attractive… It doesn't mean that they aren't.P.S.I figured I'd add a few more dark skinned women in here for the people that are fans of them.

Why do black people think that being light-skinned is more attractive than dark skin?

I would think that this kind of preference occurs in places where blacks are a minority, surrounded (in their daily life, since birth) by people with lighter skin color. A society that has a larger light skin population would likely advertise the light skin more often in order to appeal to that market. This might lead to the beauty standards of that society to be skewed towards a lighter complexion. Also spending time around more light skin people would condition to you appreciate their appearance more, especially if you do not see many people with dark skin. The rest is simply preference.Overall, I highly doubt that all dark skin people prefer light skin. (Although some research has suggested that lighter skin is associated with femininity - which could make it seem more attractive to males). Most likely, the preference (if it does exist) is due to social conditioning and prolonged exposure to a certain beauty standard.

Why is lighter skin prettier?

READ THIS! IT WILL HELP YOU UNDERSTAND!
look! i'm light skinned and i was always teased for looking like, sounding like (proper grammer, not valley girl) and having a name like a white girl. i grew up wishing that i had darker skin so that people would like me! and quite frankly, i find tall handsome and dark men more attractive than light skinned. so it's just a personal preference for me..... and btw... the ladies you mentioned aren't quite light, they're golden, carmely...

as for the ACTUAL reason people have issues about color... during slavery, when a white owner had sex with a black slave, the result would often end up being what was called a "house n*gger." they were preferred over the darker skinned slaves because they were more presentable around the guests that the owners had in the home. they were more acceptable and pleasing to the eye for the white people. as a result of this, lighter skinned people often got the oportunity to get more education, sometimes through the white "lady of the house." this spilled into the black culture like venom because now, darker skinned people were perhaps envious and threatened and the lighter skinned people perhaps felt more entitled to better things, higher education, which leads to wealth. think of all the biracial people who "passed" because they thought it would pave a better way for them. and think of all the times it worked... more often than not, sadly to say... these thoughts poison our culture to this day! handed down inadvertantly or not, through the generations by our grandparents and great parents who witnessed the atrocities put upon our people.

oh, and as a side note, to the white people reading this... this is not an accusation, merely an insight. i happen to judge people by their personality, nothing else. however, i think dark skinned men are sexy! just a preference...

Why do indian people prefer fair/lighter skin???

I never really got that either, I am indian and have darker skin, but light eyes. I am prized for having dark skin in America, because everyone wants tan skin here, but when I go to India, its exactly the opposite. I believe it is because having dark skin is extremely common in India, so common that when something uncommon came along, they call it beautiful. You know its kind of in the same way that most people in America think that people who are tan are more beautiful than people with light skin. Its because the common skin tone in America is fair and light, so tan is considered beautiful. I think that this whole image thing also has a lot to do with the media. Here, the women considered to be the prettiest women are Angelina Jolie, J Lo, etc. All with darker skin, but in India, Amrita Rao, Aishwarya Rai, etc are of lighter skin. But we do have to realize that true beauty comes from the inside and that we shouldnt judge people merely based on the color of their skin, or there looks in general, and yet we still do. I dont agree with the whole philosophy but that is how it is.

Hope this helps!

Why do some light skins think they look better than dark skinned people?

Its due to the media's glorification of lighter skinned people over darker skinned people. That little problem then becomes ingrained in many peoples minds, thus creating an over-inflated ego, or the superiority complex. This also tends to have an effect on the people that are darker skinned, making some seem like they aren't attractive due to their skin pigmentation, or the inferiority complex. Both obviously aren't good, but there are some people out there trying to clear up that little misconception.

As for me, Gabrielle Union has my vote of most attractive any given day of the week :)

Why do people think dark skin is not beautiful?

Perhaps it's just the area where you live.

In fact, I believe that most people *do* think that
dark skin is beautiful and wish that they had it.

It's one of the reasons that skin tanning
and skin-darkening body spray salons
-- along with products like 'Fake-Bake'
http://www.fakebake.com are so
very popular and people risk their
bank accounts (and even their health)
to attain a darker skin complexion.

.

Why is our society more accepting of light skin people?

I mean in within each race there are differences in skin pigments. It seems that in each culture the lighter skin people are valued more and put on a pedestal. I've seen this in the Indian culture, Latino/Hispanic cultures, African American etc.. I'm a very dark skin Black woman (originally from Uganda) as a kid I was picked on because of that.....but why? I don't get what's so ugly about dark skin and what's so better about light skin? Are we conditioned to think that the lighter you are the prettier, the better you are? We can't just blame the media because the "media" is somewhat a reflection of our society and how we interpret things as people. I would love to hear other's opinions and views on this topic. I'm really not trying to cause racial tension or anything, I just want to understand this whole skin color issue better.

Why do people think that only mixed black girls are pretty?

well the thing is when ever a dark skin black girl is found pretty its always said to be "she has white features" how does that work? shes black.. she has black features just not the stereotypical ones. personally (im asian) im jealous of some black peoples skin tones. especially the ones that are medium to darker brown. light skin is also pretty along with super dark skin. at the end of the day there are very dark mixed girls and very light full black girls. some have small noses some have big noses. some have long hair some dont. what im saying is black people have the most exotic features so you really cant group them up into one group cause their looks varies. its no doubt black girls get the harshest reps cause media, personally i live in california and im friends with plenty of black girls and guys (light and dark) a lot have great grades, sweetest people ever, pretty, well dressed. so im just saying ive came across more white people with bad attitudes does that mean i should think all white people are bad and if they look stereotypical white with blonde hair and blue eyes they are worse than ones with brown hair and brown eyes.. NO! cause that would be retarded. yet thats what people do to black people (and even some latin) everyday. there was actually a study in i think 2010 where they altered black peoples skin tones. they made them white, or tan and asked a group of like 40 guys which girl is prettier (they put the altered picture next to pictures of real white, asian, latin pictures) and 8 out of 10 times the black girl with the altered skin was seen to be the prettiest. then they switched the skin tone back and asked and the black girl was only chosen 2 for ever 10 times. so it really shows its all in their head.

In China, people consider girls with white skin to be beautiful. What do you think?

What Chinese mean by “white skin” differs from what you may imagine. You would think a person of European origin is “white” and thus has “white skin. Hence, Chinese people actually love European skin?I am sorry to say that you are completely wrong. Some Chinese, who have never traveled abroad or talked with any Westerner closely, mistakenly think they love European skin, but they have no idea what they really want.Actually, most Chinese, Japanese, and Korean people love *fine* skin:It should be light colored (and thus called “white”);It should be as smooth as possible;Sweat pores should be as small and invisible as possible;Hair should be short, thin, and invisible; It should be soft and tender.Ask your Chinese/Japanese/Korean friend which girl they think have the best skin. Then you will have an idea of what they mean by “white skin”.
