Why Do People Wrongly Judge Conservatives

Why do conservatives oppose homosexuality and gay marriage?

First, let’s separate political conservatism with social conservatism. Sometimes they go together, but not always. And it is social conservatives who oppose homosexuality and gay marriage.Social conservatives don’t like social change. They can’t really deal with it. For many, many years, people have been told that homosexuality is evil. That it is destructive. That homosexuals molest children. And of course, many religious texts have negative statements about sexual activity between men. (We can ignore the fact, for the moment, that people who use such texts are picking and choosing what they want to condemn for their own convenience.) But based on those texts and how they have been taught, some people truly believe that homosexuality is so evil that if it is allowed it will literally lead to the destruction of society. At a minimum, social conservatives cannot believe that relationships between men and women are the same as relationships between two men or two women in terms of the power of those relationships. And they believe such relationships are dangerous for children. So, the idea that marriage, an institution they consider religious, should allow for equal recognition of same sex relationships is anathema to such people.Given the way people have been taught about homosexual conduct then and about the nature of homosexuals, it is not really too surprising that social conservatives have trouble accepting the reality. That gay people are just people no better nor worse than anyone else, and that who they love really will not have an impact on society or the world at large. And that our relationships are equally as powerful. And of course, that most of us would never hurt a child and can provide wonderful, healthy homes for them. So, these are some of the reasons social conservatives oppose homosexuality and gay marriage. Ignorance, history and sometimes religion all piled together.

Why do Conservative Christians always argue that marriage equals one man plus one woman...?

"According to the Old Testament, marriage equals one man plus one or more women, and nothing in the New Testament specifically says this was changed."

Not true. In the New Testament, Jesus said that marriage was between one man and one woman: "the two will become one" (Mark 10:6-8), not "the many will become one."
