Why Do So Many People Dislike U2

Why do so many people hate Bono?

There are quite a number of people who think Bono is an asshole but I can't understand that. He's one of the best rock singers ever, he writes amazing music, he's the front man of U2 one of the biggest rock bands in the world, and is a dedicated philanthropyst and is the only person who's been nominated for an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a Nobel Prize. And unlike other rockstars and musicians he doesn't do drugs or drinks or smoke or isn't stuck-up or anything like that. In fact it's hard to imagine someone not liking Bono.

Why do people hate U2?

I'm not a GIANT U2 fan, I like about 6 songs and I'm kinda starting to get into them.
I really like the song I Will Follow and Boy/Girl(this sounds so punk and awesome).
I always see people saying U2 is one of the most hated bands, what's so bad about them?

Why do people hate U2/The Edge so much?

I noticed people hate U2 a lot, but also The Edge. I really like the documentary film It Might Get Loud with Jimmy Page, Jack White and The Edge. Whenever I watch youtube videos of parts of the film or hear people talk about it, they always complain about how stupid and annoying The Edge is. Why? I don't understand it.

Why did people hate the new U2 album?

First, as they say, there’s no accounting for taste, so much of the hate could be chalked up to individual preference for U2’s music. Whether they’re as good as they used to be, I don’t know and I don’t care.On the other hand, its release method was considered… invasive. Instead of just being made available for free on iTunes, it was inserted into each person’s Purchased files without their knowledge or consent, as if they already had downloaded it for free. People started finding it in their iClouds without recalling downloading it. The backlash was so bad a tool was released to undo it.

Why do so many people hate U2 so much?

1. They've been around for a long time. Every band with any kind of longevity acquires a lot of hatred. In my experience they often manage to pass through this into elder statesman category. It's kind of weird. I can recall a time when ACDC and the Rolling Stones were both regarded with great scorn. They were both hated and ridiculed and then suddenly the backlash turned around and they became revered and adored again. Neither did anything differently, they didn't change, but public opinion did. Maybe in 10 years time U2 will be adored generally once again.2. They're not the successful band they once were, but they behave as if they are. They had a hugely successful run with Joshua Tree, Rattle and Hum and Achtung baby. Their albums really were very good and they justified their position as the biggest act in the world. Their last few albums haven't been nearly as good and while they're no longer the best band in the world, they are treated and behave as if they're worthy of the title. There's a desire to turn U2 albums into events, when in fact they're just album releases by a band. 3. They're openly religious. Openly religious is definitely not cool right now.4. Bono does tend to rub people up the wrong way. And if you don't like him he can be hard to avoid. He does tend to pop up in lots of places sharing his views and opinions. I personally don't like Yngwie Malmsteen that much but he's easy to avoid and doesn't intrude on my life much. 5. Lots of people really like them. Bands who have dedicated and ardent followers tend to attract haters in equal numbers.

Why do loads of people hate Bono/U2?

Easy person to just illogically give out about as he's famous and people will agree.
The guy uses his fame to try do some good & yes he has a bit of a poser image with the glasses etc but he's also a stadium-filling rock legend & a very nice chap (met him).

Hate would be much better directed at other irish artists like the diva that is Van Morrison, brilliant musician absolute w*nker & i'm a big fan of the guys music :P.

Do the Irish people hate U2 or do they just think that Bono is unnecessarily harsh?

I don’t claim authority on the matter of cultural sentiments, but since I’ve lived in the US for several years I’ve the advantage of distance and time in seeing how Irish people’s negative view of U2 is, well, a very Irish thing.Disclaimer: Not all Irish people dislike U2. They are talented musicians and plenty of Irish people appreciate that aspect. But I do think the bombast and Bono’s increasing self-aggrandizement over the last thirty-odd years rubs Irish people up the wrong way, because that’s just not how we do things at home.I wouldn’t go as far as calling it hate, but there’s definitely a hint of begrudgery in how Irish people feel about U2. Fomented from our history of ethnic suppression by colonizers as well a hefty serving of the Catholic culture of guilt and shame (which we did to ourselves quite effectively), there was/is a normalized cultural antipathy towards others’ good fortune, success, or aspiration for success. Pulling each other down was (and perhaps to some extent, still is) the unofficial national sport. It could be summed up with the phrase “Who do you think you are? You think you’re better than me?!”U2 has stepped outside this mode, and embraced the American definition and acceptance of success. In the US, there’s no shame in promoting oneself, or self marketing. I think it was Bono who compared the Irish and American attitudes to the success of others in the following way (paraphrased because I cannot find a source for it!):The American looks at the man living in the big house on the top of the hill and says to himself, “Some day, I’ll be that guy.”The Irishman looks at the man living in the big house on the top of the hill and says to himself, “Some day, I’ll get that guy.”
