Why Do Some People Own Big Snakes Like

Why do people like Snakes?

First off, I highly doubt that your boyfriend's snake suffocated itself. That sounds like an idiotic at-home diagnosis. Furthermore, you do NOT have to feed snakes live food--in fact, it is safer to feed them frozen. We only feed frozen at my work. We don't even sell live feeders. Now I'm not a snake fanatic, but I don't hate them either. I can see the appeal they have to some people. A lot of people just like the fact that they are different. The same thing can be said about a lot of reptiles. Snakes really are fascinating creatures. They are completely unlike us in every regard. They collect scents with their tongue, their organs are aligned in a row fashion, they move without any appendages, they swallow food whole--and yet, while they are so completely different, they actually have shocking personalities. Some are grumpy and some are sweet. When they peek out at me at work, it is so obvious that they are at least vaguely aware of what is going on. They know that the workers feed them and bring water and customers don't. They become nervous when new and unfamiliar people hold them. Some are very lazy and others are very curious. Even snakes of the same species vary greatly in personality. You may not believe it, but reptiles are capable of love too. Just ask a bunch of random strangers what they think a hamster is capable of feeling. They probably won't believe that they can love their owner, but we both know that's a bunch of crap, right? People don't understand how amazing and surprising an animal can be until they experience it firsthand. So like it or not, your attraction to cute fuzzy things is probably very similar to your boyfriend's attraction to different scaly things. =)

Why do people have snakes as pets?

Snakes make lovely pets.
They are beautiful, interesting, low maintenance and relatively easy to care for.
I have 28 currently.

Of course the larger constrictors can be dangerous, but so can large dogs and horses.
For every one snake that attacks, there are far more safe and sound in their enclosures minding their own business.
They are, however, technically wild animals still and should be treated with the utmost respect.
I personally believe that there should be some kind of regulations on the owning of large constrictors (burmese pythons, rock pythons, anacondas etc), the way there is with venomous species.

Snakes ARE good pets.
You dont have to keep them, but dont condemn those that do.

Why do some people love snakes?

Snakes have always been my first love.I don't know what attracts me so much towards these reptiles, but I am totally crazy about them. The first time I took a snake in my hand was while travelling in train which was quite a big python. That incident made me fall in love with them & since then I haven't left any opportunity to touch them & feed my hunger (not literally of course) whenever I have come across them. And I believe its not at all difficult or scary. Just do it once & you might also fall in love with them too. The feeling you get is totally out of the world, when you have a creature in your hand from whom the whole world is afraid of. Their skin is super soft yet muscular. They will crawl on your hand and you will get the feeling inexplicable. I have had lot of encounters with snakes (of course with a snake charmer along), but had very few opportunities to capture those moments. But few lucky ones are posted below.2nd encounter with the Giant python at Haridwar (Har-ki-pauri)3rd encounter with cobra (poison-less) at Bhootnath Temple Kolkata6th encounter with cobra again at Marathalli, Bangalore7th Encounter was with a small snake while travelling in a Train at Serampore, KolkataAnd I just hope the list continues forever & ever...Thanks for Asking..Founder Mega Bazaar Fashions[1]Teetotalers[2]Footnotes[1] http://www.megabazaarfashions.com[2] Teetotalers India Official Online Store of cool T-Shirts & Sweatshirts

Why do so many people keep snakes as pets?

I'm a girl and i've had a ball python since i was nine, that was ten years ago; and i've never known an easier animal to handle than a snake, i through my 4 ft python over my shoulder or across them and he stays put, try to do that with any other animal.
if you ever look up human deaths by pet snake vs dogs, you'll wonder why dogs are "man's best friend" and not "vicious homicidal carnivores."
My snakes and my dog have the same personalities, dumb and sleep a lot.

Why do so many people think snakes are bad?

Now before we begin, I do NOT have one as a pet. Please do not criticize me or such. Just a calm answer, please.

I dont know about others, but I like snakes in general. Constrictors are my favorites. But so many people, especially females, are terrified of snakes. Okay, yeah, even though I said I like the constrictors, I dont want to be around any venomous snakes, like copperheads, cobras and rattlesnakes, or such.

When you think about it though, how often do snakes bite? If you ask me, its either out of self protection, or if they are hungry. Snakes are generally small in size, roughly 10 feet at the most (with the exclusion of large pythons and anacondas), and eat maybe once a week or two, and usually they eat rodents. I dont know why else a snake would need to open its mouth.

Snakes are not slimy either. They are reptiles, much different than mammals. They shed their skin, like all reptiles do, even alligators and crocodiles. A sign that they are growing up. The only time a snake may appear slimy, is if they just came out of swimming in water.

Some people have snakes as pets. They are actually one of the easiest pets to take care of. You just feed them when they need to be fed, and clean its container. I have seen YouTube videos of owners feeding their snakes live food, like rats, and rabbits. That is how they eat in the wild. Its just natural instinct.

While I do understand that in seemingly rare cases, especially in south Florida, they can get out. In the end, it comes back to the owner if something really bad should happen. I can understand that.

I have made detailed points, so with the exclusion of that last small paragraph, why do people think snakes are so bad? Again, no criticism to me, I do NOT have a snake as a pet.

Why do people have snakes for pets?

They just want to be unique and don't understand the meaning of a pet. Snakes cannot be domesticated and they don't understand humans at all. All they do is live their lives and are predators for food. They don't demonstrate love, affection which even wild animals such as lions and bears do! There is this classic real life story of a woman with a python as a pet, was advised by her Vet to get rid of him when he starved himself, measuring the lady daily to gobble her up! Terrifying. Recently we had another incident of a woman in Indonesia consumed by her “pet alligator” !Humans unnecessarily interfere with their lifestyle and keep them as pets. To keep them as pets either they need to be de-fanged or efforts put in to avoid a bite! Stepping on a dogs's tail and on snake give different reactions. The dog will whimper if he/she knows it is the master who has hurt (unknowingly!) whereas the snake will curl and bite.Snakes are best left in their habitat. They have no value as pets. They need to breed and manage the balance of nature. Their food habits are not easy for humans to provide! Furthermore they need to be put into an enclosed space restricting their movements. Snakes travel distances in search of prey and to put them in an enclosed glass box (vivarium?) is just plain cruelty. All countries should ban keeping wild animals including snakes, as pets. Snakes may be reared by experts for research and extracting venom for making anit-dotes. That is not “pet” snake!Postscript :Many of the comments are from those who have had snakes as pet and have ferociously defended that what they do is right. Whatever said and done, no amount of argument is right - snakes are not pets and they are happiest in their environment. I really would like to see a snake respond to a human when they see one - they will want to slither away for fear of being hurt. Dogs for that matter will come to a human wagging it's tail if it likes the human. Also name a snake and call out for it - call a dog by its name and see the reaction. I have had friends with snakes as pet and sad to say it is pure “ill-treatment” however well they are kept.

Can snakes really eat people?

Wow, what a collection of misinformation. Some people are mostly right, and some are just plain making things up.

While the anaconda is the largest snake in the world by body weight, it is not likely not the longest. One of the more believable reports of snakes over 30' would be a 37' snake shot in 1944, but even this seems unlikely. It is most likely incredibly rare for any snake to get over 30' long. Tales of a 100'+ snake are purely ridiculous.

The question of 'can' they eat a human? Yes, absolutely. A small person would not be difficult for a large anaconda to swallow, including the seemingly impossible shoulders mentioned in other replies. DO THEY eat humans? I'm sure it's happened, but reports of it actually happening are impossible to confirm or deny based on what they are. It seems unlikely that the occasional Amazonian child isn't snatched from the marshland from time to time throughout history, but the nature of the location and the people involved make accurate record keeping and documentation impossible.

Why do people keep venomous snakes as pets?

Mostly because people are stupid. Because you’re correct. No animal like that should be kept as a pet, even by an experienced pet owner. They are wild animals. It’s terrible for the animal, and it’s terrible for the human.
