How do you measure “power” with organizations like these? The US Government will dismantle either or both of these organizations, kill their soldiers and put their management on trial and in prison as soon as it can get them out from under the rocks where they hide.The Sinaloa Cartel is reputed to be very wealthy and have military grade equipment. They’re a secret organization. Who knows what’s true. I am not at all personally familiar with them.The Five Families were broken up between 1985 and 1997. That some members still exist doing some of the same things they’ve always done is very probable, but they too are secret organizations. If someone tells you they’re members of the Genovese Family or the Gambino Family or the Bonanno Family, etc, they probably are not. Nonetheless, if someone brags about being in the mafia, they are probably dangerous screwballs in their own right. My advice, steer clear.The Sinaloa Cartel is known for cruel and torturous murders. This is not “power.” It is crazy behavior. Likewise the American mob, because their activities are illegal and they have no other recourse for people who break contracts or steal from them, also resort to murder although their executions tend to be more straight=forward than the Cartel’s.The Sinaloa Cartel is supposed to have strong ties to the Mexican government. That, if it’s true, is some semblance of power. That they continue to operate at full strength in Mexico give credence to this myth. Likewise, the Five Families in New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island and the Outfit in Chicago are supposed to have American politicians and judges on their payroll. If this is true it allows them to operate without fear of full reprisal from law enforcement. This too is a form of power.To my knowledge these criminal organizations do not war against each other so which is the more powerful in a military sense cannot be determined.

I don’t think there’s a good book on this, but the tide turned for a bunch of reasons, from what I can surmise.First, the federal government really made life miserable for the Mafia, arresting lots of bosses.Second, as Italian-Americans grew in stature in America, and sent their kids to college, a lot of them left “the life.”Third, there was a MAJOR shift in the drug market in the 1980s, as drugs like crack came to the fore. They could bring it in via Canada.But Latin American cartels started bringing stronger stuff up through Mexico. Then, much of the US population was shifting to warmer climates, closer to the Mexican routes. Meth started being made by rednecks in the country and crack was controlled by people in inner-cities. The innercity druglords, who may be Latino or black, started sending their dealers up to areas formerly controlled by the mob. For example, in the late 1980s, innercity druglords would send dealers from New York City to Upstate. They’d give the kids one-way tickets to places like Utica, have them displace local drug dealers, and take over the market.By this point, the old mob was too old, tired and beaten down by the feds to compete with the new business model.Some might argue though that if indeed there were to be drugs on the streets, they were handled in a much more civilized way by the mob.

For that, you must first understand the history behind the Russian Mob. Unlike, most other criminal organizations, the Russian mob is not made up of your friendly neighborhood thugs. A lot of the members are ex KGB and Red Army, who joined these organizations after the fall of the Soviet Union. I would say that the Italian Mafia is more vicious in it’s activities. I would view the American Mafia as being more mild than the Mafia in Italy. The Mafia in Italy are extremely powerful, more or less controlling the country at one point. There is a reason why the term “Mafia State” stems from Italy.The Italian Mafia tend to be very brutal and very dramatic in their actions too. There are numourous recorded incidents of the Mafia attacking and successfully assassinating very high profile figures in Italy. One incident I can think of is the murder of leading prosecutor, Giovanni Falcone:Another incident was the Train 904 bombing.The Yakuza on the other hand tend to be very secretive and decentralised. Their crimes are mostly within finance and economics. They are prone to violence, yes, but they are nowhere near as dramatic as their Italian counterparts are.
