Why Do Some Songs Make Me Cry

Why do I cry over some songs?

Interesting to me that almost every single answer to this question has assumed an emotional response due to triggered memories. Perhaps that's why, but then, I doubt you would have asked your question; you'd know why, as you would relive those strong memories and experiences. Fairly obvious connection.I'm going to give a different answer based on my own experience. I think music (with our without singing) can be emotive in a general sense. Not sad, not mournful, not anything specific. Just powerful in pure, undirected fashion. You say “a song that's not sad or emotional,” but I take that to mean specifically emotional. Your crying response may be related to the ability of music to make your feel, not one way or another, but to powerfully open you up. I've experienced this, and it often gives me chills/goosebumps and brings me to tears. Not because I'm sad, mad, happy, or excited. But because there is an immensity of feeling, of emotion. It's like the raw emotional substrate upon which all emotions are built. And it moves us powerfully. These experiences are not based on specific connections you've made between a song and an experience. They aren't nostalgia. They aren’t due to memories, repressed or otherwise. They are simply part of what it is to be human. We are innately musical, and this is a manifestation of this fact. Not sure if this describes your experience or helps you, but it describes my own experience with instances like you mentioned in your question. I'm not emotional in a specific way. I'm fundamentally moved. You are OK. It's totally OK. In fact, it's beautiful. It's part of what makes us human. And it's one of the more powerful, rich experiences one can have. Treasure these experiences.

Why do songs make me cry?

I have the same problem. But I don't think it's a problem. You must be a great music lover. Songs touch you emotionally. There is nothing wrong with that. It shows you are sensitive to others people and what is going on in their life. Words mean something to you. I am the exact same way. I listen carefully to words of songs and figure the meaning on them out. Music is good for the soul. Don't change how you are towards it. It's a good thing.

Why do sad songs make me cry?

I'm no ppppsychologist or nothing like that ...but it I were to take a gander at an answer I would have to say that i wreckin' you're probbly depressed in a pertty bad ways. you might wanna make a meeting with someone to get you some help with dat der problems. i'm sorry if my enlgish was too sofista catered.

Why do some songs make me cry?

You do it because of a neurological and psychological reaction to the song - you identify with the actual emotions the artist is trying to convey. This is the whole point of the song to move you in the way the artist intended to move you. All it means is it's a good song that achieved what the artist set out to achieve.

How can you stop it? Stop listening to the song - only listen to that song when you actually want to experience that specific emotion.

Most people catalog songs in their mind by the emotions those songs bring out in them and use music as a way of enhancing their emotional state.

Crying over a beautiful song is natural and normal and you shouldn't be embarrassed about it nor should you seek to stop it.

Why do some songs make me feel weird?

there's some songs that give me a strange feeling, i can't really describe it. for example, the biggest one for me is Heaven by the Walkmen which was the song at the very end of the how i met your mother finale. that's where i first heard it, and the finale was really beautiful and it makes me cry really hard hahah, so thats probably it. but it gives me a feeling i cant describe - the same as when ted lifted up the horn outside robyn's window.

Why do upbeat songs make me cry?

Those aren't exactly upbeat songs. The tone and mood of the songs isn't technically a happy one either. I can understand where you are coming from though. I can also "feel" music too. I've never cried listening to a song, but I've really felt the beat and has caused me to change emotions to happy, sad, angry, etc.

By the way, tying your emotions and thoughts to songs consciously or subconsciously is normal as well. I songs sometimes bring up a memory that is associated with the tone/beat of the song...or I even ponder about things that are on the same realm of the sound of the song.

I would say, as an amateur psychologist, that it is totally normal to feel like crying. I believe that everybody's emotions are attuned to different thoughts, sights, as well as sounds.
For example, Somewhere over the rainbow by israel kamakawiwo'ole used to make me feel sad...and it's totally normal even though lyrics are cheerful. However, the song is sung in a depressing manner, so it's natural to feel depressed.

My personal music of choice is dance music (ie. electro, trance, house, etc.) and THAT music is upbeat. Imagine feeling mellowed out, gloomy, or even inspired by a track from Armin Van Buuren or Ferry Corsten.

Why does some music make you cry?

Moving of emotions…Songs make us cry not always. Songs are written to tell a story of how the writer feel or a writer may write a song to express a feeling. It be a happy feeling, feeling of losing someone, love, craziness and many others. All these are felt in a song, and when you relate to it, it has the power to elevate to higher standard of emotions. No the question to why songs make us cry are simply based on the choice of words and the reaction and feeling attached to it by the writer. It is also based on the sound in which it is sung. For instance, a dull song speaking of loneliness can't be accompanied with a happy tone in voice. It is based on the expression given by the writer to be exerted on the singer that would reach out to the heart of the listener.A writer may write a lyrics full of emotions but when it is sung wrongly by the singer the message becomes misinterpreted. Some songs might drive you into tears by watching the expressions of the singer even when it has a bad vocal quality and it can also divert your attention and concentration to it by just listening to it…The quality of a song is given by how well it is sung, expressed and felt by the listener.A song is another way of speaking to the souls and hearts of audience listening…
