Why Do The Elderly Refuse To Drink Water

Elderly dog keeps drinking excessive amounts of water?

Our elderly basset hound is almost 15 years old, and over the last couple of months, she's been drinking excessive amounts of water. She'll drink the whole bowl of water in one day. It's not just once or twice, it's every five to ten minutes that she's drinking water. And it's not just small amounts, but big, excessive amounts of water continuously. She's old, and has trouble going up and down the stairs to get outside, and she's also having problems with her back legs, which means we may have to put her down soon, but first we want to find out why she's drinking so much water.

What are some polite ways to refuse a drink offered by seniors/boss/peers?

Why do some house cats refuse to drink water from a bowl but instead seek it elsewhere (i.e. dripping faucet, puddles, toilet, sink, etc.)?

Cats like fresh water, and often gravitate toward running, cold water because it's naturally more likely to be clean and fresh - Water that's been sitting out for a while in nature may well be dangerous, filled with bacteria and insects, and stagnant.  People also tend to make the mistake of putting water bowls close to food bowls, when cats don't like to drink water that's next to where they eat (probably another throwback to when they ate raw carcasses which could taint nearby water as they decomposed). Then there's the fact that cats have very sensitive noses and water bowls are sometimes washed with chemical and scent filled dishsoaps that make the water taste/smell odd. Our elderly cat is set in her ways and happily drinks water from her bowl (she's also on a wet food only diet for health reasons, so she doesn't need a whole lot), but our two young males were big fans of drinking from taps and from the water bowls we put outside for the chickens, so I got them a cat drinking fountain (ours is a 'Catmate') so they have access to cold, filtered, running water 24/7. It's definitely something I recommend for people who's cats pester them for drinks from the taps etc. (actually, I think most cats would benefit from it) I think the only downside is the expense of filters.

What are my options for a cat that refuses all food but drinks water?

Everyone assumes this is an indoor cat.And they are right if it IS an indoor cat. TAKE IT TO THE VET. If the condition lasts more than two days - it can die as the liver fails, and the toxins build up (which is keeping the cat from getting hungry - eating just produces more toxins). It can also have a kidney/bladder infection and the kidneys are not filtering properly. It is also possible to have diabetes.Cats that go outdoors may have found alternate sources of food. We “had” one cat that would come in and eat (usually), then go back out… Sometimes not eating anything. Nothing. Several days… Turned out he had a territory and made the rounds round. Eating at each of about 6 houses. Yes, one rather fat cat.I had a cat (mostly outdoors), turned out she only ate food if I was the one putting it out, and stayed to pet her. Otherwise, she ate birds, mice, snakes, lizards, chipmunks…

My elderly rabbit stopped eating and drinking, and now she can barely walk! Please help!?

There isn't any need in being cruel when someone is grieving. I only hope that, if there is any justice in this world, that you are treated as rudely when you are suffering the loss of someone you care about. I, personally, don't think that just because you think you can be anonymous, that insensitive comments are funny or appropriate, and I think that you can use moderate decorum and restraint when you realize someone has a genuine concern over a pet and that they are seeking advice on this forum.

Anytime I pose something on the interent, I realize that I am subject to the possibitlity of receiving comments from losers and insensitive jackasses such as yourself, but I don't appreciate it, nor do I think you can consider yourself a human being. Just because you are reading an anonymous post on the internet, doesn't mean there isn't a real person behind it. Grow up, even just a little bit.

My dog won't drink from a water bottle. Help?

We are moving from Japan to Germany and our elderly dog refuses to drink from a water bottle. This is a big problem as the flight will take over 40 hours. She will be in a controlled environment during the flight. Does anyone have any ideas on how to help her to drink from it. We've been trying to get her to drink from it for almost 10 days and she will wait until being let out and then drink from whatever water source she can find. We've given up for fear of making her sick and she is back to her bowl. Please help! We can't leave her behind!

What happens when my dehydrated cat won't drink water?

The cat could die. Test for dehydration by doing a gentle pinch. If the skin doesn't snap back then he's dehydrated. Call your vet. They can administer fluids under the skin. Also the cat's underlying disease can be treated. If you're worried about the cost there's Care Credit that you can apply for at the vet's.Some ways to encourage cats to drink is to provide running water. I have a cheap fountain that my cats love to splash. Also adding tuna or salmon juice to water can entice them to drink. With the hot weather be sure to make fresh water available to animals outside.

Should I always turn away from elders while drinking in Korea or is it only the youngest in the room?

Actually it depends on the elders. Some elders want it ‘always’ then we should ‘always’ turn away for drinking alcohol. But the point is, the first time. When you turn away at the first, then maybe some of them would ask you not to do that anymore. (This is usual)And older than me but not ELDERS like late 20s and 30s, most of them don’t want that. (Cause that make them feel like older people) And they understand the small pain. So you don’t need to do that infront of them. It’s the culture between the age 60s - 30s. So they know very well about this etiquette. But not others.+but when some elders fill your glass, then you need to hold the glass with both hands. It’s the thing you should do.

Why do nursing homes thicken the water that the seniors drink? Shouldn't water be water?

Some elderly people have issues with their epiglottis, the small flap of cartilage in the back of a person’s throat that closes off the respiratory system while swallowing. When properly functioning, this flap blocks water or food from accidentally falling into your lungs. If you have ever had “wind go down the wrong pipe”, then you understand what happens when this flap fails to block aspiration of a liquid. Now, if a fluid is more viscous, then even if there is a small gap, caused by a slightly bad seal on your epiglottis, the liquid will go the right way, down your esophagus into your stomach, instead of into your lungs. So, while the water is equally hydrating, whether thick or thin, the thickened water helps with the swallowing reflex, to prevent the danger and discomfort of accidentally inhaling some water. I should mention that the same is done for soups and other thin liquids, not just water, and it is only for those who need it, unless a particular nursing home has so many people with swallowing issues that they just thicken all water, as a matter of protocol.
