Why Do Vehicles Exceed Their Specified Top Speeds

What is the top speed of a 1995 honda civic lx 4-door?

If it's stock, about 100mph, maybe 105-110.

Why do speedometers gauge up to 160 MPH when the max speed limit is 85 mph in the US?

There are cars out there that apparently had a speedometer installed that go up to 200mph(touareg v10 tdi UK and Europe versions had speedo max upto 200 mph, 320km/ph) so why is this the reason? On the road today there are many cars that can't hit 160mph even the big German brands only are limited to 155, there are a few exceptions that can go beyond 155 from factory but look at cars that aren't really powerful but have a speedo that claims it can do 160 when the car can barely hit 120mph.When a car is made the marketing people have to sell the car so they will build an image of the car and potray it how they want. Every car manufacturer knows the cars best feature has to be the engine (if engine is lacklustre no point is there) so the engineers to make the car feel solid and fast and powerful will install a speedo of a 160 mph so the customer will feel this engine can do some serious speed wow. Back in the days people didn't really read car reviews or see attempted top speed videos so they didn't really know what they were getting into so in example form:You go to a nissan showroom (example purposes btw I love nissan) and it's a small little 1.8 engine and it can barely do 100mph never mind 160mph. So you sit in and you glance at the speedo and you see 160mph as soon as you see that you will automatically assume this car will do 160mph you won't ask the salesman because he will say “yes yes very solid engine engineer's say it can do 160mph”After that well car sold.It was just used as a sale marketing technique that's all its stupid really but that's what it is.If your wondering well speed limit is only 85 here in US why 160mph speedo well car manufacturers cant design every speedo to abide countries speeding laws so there has to be one speedo fitted exactly THE same figures in every car. You can go upto 300kmh in some parts of Germany so car manufactures need to add figures upto 300kmh on speedo so ze driver in Germany can see how much speed he is doing. Thanks mo

Is it true that any modern vehicle's speedometer is set to display a speed higher than the actual speed by a couple of miles per hour?

Yes. Speedometers are calibrated at the factory to read at or above the actual speed of the car. The goal is to avoid sending out cars that have speedometers that indicate you are going the speed limit when you are actually exceeding it.The idea is to err on the side of caution. The same thing is done with gas gauges. The gauge is always calibrated to show empty when you actually have a gallon or so of gas left in the tank. These practices are designed to give the driver a little cushion. Doing so keeps people out of trouble. Human nature is to push the limits, whether this be your speed or how far you can drive before filling the tank.A speedometer is calibrated to read correctly with new tires of a certain circumference. As the tires wear, they get smaller by several inches. This changes the accuracy by about 2% which makes the speedometer show a higher speed that actual. It works out to about 1.5 mph at 70 mph over the life of the tires. This effect is larger on larger tires.I always check my car’s speedometer against a GPS unit or by timing my progress over a measured mile. The car I mainly drive indicates 2.5 mph high at 70 mph. My old beater SUV indicates the correct speed. The two other cars in the family indicate correctly.I once had a Jeep that showed I was going slower than my actual speed by about five mph. A previous owner had put larger tires on the car. I got pulled over several times because I forgot this was the case.A month ago, I went down the road towing a trailer. I saw I needed gas soon, but I did not figure on how poor the mpg would be towing the trailer. When I next looked at the gauge it was far below zero and I was 20 miles away from the next gas station. Luckily, the tank still had several gallons in it and I made it to the fill up. But don’t count on this unless you want to walk. I have. It’s no fun.Human nature. Engineers have learned to design around it.

Are police allowed to drive 20+ mph above the speed limit without an emergency nor without their blue lights?

Are police allowed to go 20+ miles above the speed limit without an emergency? I was given a speeding ticket around midnight by this cop saying that I did 72mph in a 55mph highway, but if I was doing 72 then he must have been doing 80-90+mph. It was a curved lane and he entered the highway from a merge lane and at this point I saw him and I was already at the speed limit, but he weaved past the other drivers and disappeared out of sight ridiculously fast, at one point I looked down and saw that I was at 63mph, but the police car was merely a tiny spec of light at this point because he sped so far ahead already, while still speeding above the limit. Then once the highway had about 3 cars left, one car next to the police car, one to the back of me, and myself, the police car put on his breaks and completely stopped in the middle of the highway which made the driver next to him come to a complete stop, made me and the car diagonal of me slow down because we were wondering what happened. It took me a good 7-10+ seconds of driving at speed limit to get up to him and a few more before he came out of the complete stop and started pursing me and finally pulling me over to give me a ticket for speeding. I really and truly don't know if I was going as fast as he said I was, but I know he was driving A LOT faster than the speed limit, and OBVIOUSLY there was no emergency if he had enough time to completely brake in the middle of a trafficless highway to wait for me to pass him before he came after me. He tailed me for a little before turning on the lights and pulling me over to the shoulder of the highway. He said he came to the complete stop on the highway when he tagged me at 72mph, while I was a half a mile or more behind him.

So basically my questions are:

1) Are cops allowed to surpass the speed limit by 20+ mph if there was no emergency (because he had enough time brake and completely stop to wait for me to catch up with him on a basically no traffic highway at this point), and their sirens and blue lights weren't on?

2) How'd I get a ticket from a half a mile or more behind a cop car that was speeding so fast I never caught up to it until it completely stopped mid-highway?? @_@

Tires replaced with lower speed rating.Who is liable?

A few months back, we had all four tires changed out at Just Tires. We blew out the driver tire just before Christmas and went to a different facility to buy a new one. We were told there that they could not replace that single one because the rest of the tires were of a lower speed rating than specified (in the door, it tells you apparently). My question is, is Just Tires liable for any of this? We of course didn't know at the time that we were driving on tires of a lower speed rating but we want to go back to Just Tires and see what they can do. Help!

Why can't cars attain the max speed which is printed/hardcoded at the speedometer?

It's really a margin of error. Like the 2016 Camaro 2SS, and it has a speedometer of 200 MPH. But the top speed of the car is around 160 MPH but that's with the governor on. I estimate that without the governor it could get to 185 MPH. Still almost 20 MPH above what it truly can do. Again margin of error. Just in case people modify it. Chevy and Ford are huge supporters of the aftermarket game, unlike Dodge. Chevy and Ford encourage people to modify and make their cars better, lighter and faster. They want people to supercharge their cars, put forged internals in, and to replace the exhaust system or to replace the interior seating. However, their are some cars who's speedometers are lower than the top speed. Such as the Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack. The car is pushing 182 as its top speed but the speedometer only goes up to 180MPH. The reason behind this. To discourage modification of the actual car. Also, I just learned this, but dodge actually encrypt their car computers and its more difficult to change the settings of the computer, again this is to discourage modification of the car. The Scat pack is packing in around 485HP. The reason why they want to discourage modification is because they want you to buy the next fastest car. Which is the SRT HELLCAT. which has 707 HP. so with around 10k in upgrade. I can get the scat pack doing 800HP. That's 100HP more than the hellcat and around 15k less than buying a hellcat. So all in all, most companies do it as a margin of error and for modification. However, a small portion of companies, like dodge, do it so then you'll buy the next fastest car from them and not from an aftermarket shop.

What is the speed of an aircraft?

Of a commercial liner their airspeed varies from 250 - 300 knots. A turboprop such as an ATR, or Dash 8, would top out around 250 knots in the air, but a larger liner such as a 767 or a 747 will have an airspeed as high as 320 knots. However there are restrictions: below 10,000 ft aircraft may NOT exceed 250 knots, this is solely for spacing of approaching and departing.
When an aircraft is taking off there are many factors to consider; speed, gross weight, amount of flap (a larger wing surface has a greater lift) and temperatures and humidity. In normal conditions an aircraft will take off around 130 - 160 knots. The speeds for V1 (decision speed - once reached takeoff must continue) VR (the speed the aircraft pitches up) and finally V2 (the speed at which the aircraft should be off the ground) are determined by the on-board computer or FMC. The pilot simply enters the planes weight into this handy tool and these speeds are calculated in seconds. When 80 knots is reached on the takeoff roll the co-pilot calls out "80 knots" and the captain checks the main gauges, providing everything is good the aircrafts speed advances to V1, or decision speed, once this speed has been reached there is no going back - takeoff MUST continue, this is also called out by the co-pilot. VR, or rotation speed is usually about 5 knots above V1 and the co-pilot will call out "rotate" and whether the engines burning up or everythings great the captain will pitch the plane up and should hopefully be climbing when "V2" is called out. The gear is retracted, as are the flaps and the plane sails away into the sky.
VR is usually 150 knots on large aircraft and120 on Regional jets.

Does the Autobahn have a minimum speed limit?

In Germany your vehicle must be capable and permitted to go more than 60 km/h, in Austria at least 60 km/h, in Switzerland at least 80 km/h.Additionally you have to choose your speed so that no other vehicles are endangered. In Switzerland, if a motorway has more than two lanes per direction, the leftmost lane can only be used by vehicles capable and permitted to go at least 100 km/h (this includes travel coaches but excludes lorries).Vehicles in traffic must go at a speed that they are no obstacle to the traffic flow and no danger to others (the law does not specify numbers).Of course posted speed restrictions must be observed even if they are lower than these limits (usually during roadworks) and drivers must reduce speed in case of fog, ice and snow (or very heavy rain which also obstructs the view).
