Why Do White Castle Burgers Have Holes And Krystal Burgers Do Not

Are Krystal burgers and White Castle burgers made by the same company?

They are so similar... and priced similarly, and their stores fill the same niche in the marketplace.

The only difference I've ever been able to see is that Krystal is mostly in the South and White Castle is mostly in the North.

Are they the same company?

Or just competitors that hit on similar formulas and approaches?

Why do White Castle burgers have holes and Krystal burgers do not?

The holes are supposed to make the patties cook quicker. As thin as they are I don't think it really matters. They buy from different suppliers, so their patties are different.

White Castle/Krystal Burgers?

I was just wondering what was in the burgers. Especially the sticky part between the bottom bun and the patty. It's kind of soggy and sticky and.... disgusting. After eating them I really feel that people overrate White Castle and their burgers. It's the worst burger (if you want to call it that) I've ever tasted. That's not the point though. I just want to know what it has in it. Thanks.

How do White Castle and Krystal burgers compare?

Depends on who you ask. People that grew up in an area with only white castle will say white castle while those only in an area with krystals will say krystals. I live in one of the only two states that have both and I have to say Krystal burgers are much better. The catch to either place is they must be fresh. Both have soft buns when fresh, but when they have been sitting for a bit they become tougher and not as good. (That goes for any fast food though.) Although krystals has better burgers the fries at white castle are better.

What does White Castle burgers taste like?

I live in Australia and well, we don’t have it here. And I was watching a show and they were talking about it. All I know is that it’s small in size. But I may be wrong.

So what does it taste like? The burgers I mean…

Are there onions on White Castle burgers?

The onions and five holes in the hamburger patties are what make White Castle unique. Dehydrated onions are mixed with water in big batches, then spread out over the griddle. The hamburger patties then the buns are added next. Because of the holes in the burger patties the burgers do not need to be flipped. The extra water in dehydrated onion mix steams the buns. FYI the hamburger patties are 100% beef. On the negative side, the current family owners discriminate against older people - many White Castle employees worked there for decades and were let go a few years ago - the current management wanted to get rid of the higher paid older employees and get younger people in as managers. If that matters to you consider other alternatives.

Why are White Castle hamburgers so popular?

White Castle burgers are delicious and addictive. Been eating them since a kid in the 50s. They taste different (better in my opinion) due to the method of preparation--see other comments. Their business model hasn't allowed for widespread distribution, they are found mainly in Northern states. When my military/business travels took me to the South, I discovered Krystal burgers, which have been around almost as long as White Castle. They are almost the same as White Castle burgers and just as addictive.

Do Krystal and White Castle cook their burgers in a microwave?

One of the defining features of White Castle restaurants is that you can watch them cook your food, as the kitchen has an open design that lets you see every part of how they are doing the food prep. This was done quite intentionally to alleviate fears of contamination or unsanitary conditions, which were rampant at burger joints when the first White Castle was founded. As a result, you can clearly see if they are using a microwave or not to cook your food. I’ve gotten burgers at White Castle many times, and I’ve never seen them microwave my food. I’d assume that the same is true throughout the chain. Can’t tell you what Krystal does as I’ve never eaten there.

What are White Castle hamburgers made out of?

White Castle uses it's own technique for cooking the hamburgers.First they start with a hot grill then they add a thin layer of onions. *1On top of the onions they add a thin, square 100% beef patty with 5 holes. On top of the patty they put the top and bottom of the square bun. This makes the onions caramelize and that cooks into the burgers. You will notice the burgers have 5 holes in them, this is so the burger cooks evenly and lets the steam through. The moisture and juices from the burger and onions then escape into the bun. Then they scoop each out with a spatula and assemble the burger. The onions and burger goes on the bun with some pickles and optionally some cheese. Some White Castles will add ketchup or mustard on request but most just serve it as is and let you add that yourself if you want.It is too bad there are no White Castles in Tucson, AZ. I used to be able to get them in Detroit where my grandmother lived when I was a kid and always loved them. I can still get them in the rare visit to the east coast and usually do.They also come packaged in the freezer section all across the USA to be reheated but it just is not the same as the real thing.1* -- I think they are using diced, rehydrated onions for the burgers but can't confirm that for sure.
