Why Does Everyone Avoid Good Rock And Deeply Meaningful Music

What are some good CLASSIC ROCK songs to play for my class? Read info?

So, in my music class, we all have to bring in a song to analyze its lyrics and musical structure.
I really love Classic Rock, and my fave bands are the beatles, the rolling stones, led zeppelin (you get the picture)
All of my classmates are so focused on that Katy Perry pop crap; so I would like to introduce them to good ol' rock and roll without scaring them off by playing a song thats 'too deep' for them (I mean, they're just not ready for the level of rock "Time" by Pink Floyd is.)

And it has to be acceptable for school...so no "You Shook Me All Night Long"

Why is indie music so popular?

Seriously, I don't get it. The lyrics are odd (seriously, look up Lady in Spain by Ingrid Michaelson and tell me it isn't odd), and the bands seem to like ripping off each other. Some of the stuff I listen to could be considered indie, but it's mostly lighter stuff where the lyrics are more normal and the guitars aren't all playing the same depressing minor chords. But why is the stuff with the depressing minor chords and weird lyrics so popular? Also, why do all these indie-loving hipster people claim to be unique, but they all dress the same?

Almost half the people in my grade at school listen to this music (there are the ones like me who listen to stuff like Paramore and Anberlin, and then there are the people who like mainstream music)

Sorry if I'm offending anyone with these tastes... I just don't get it.

MY HISTORY
----------------------
I feel I belong with one foot in Goth and one foot in Metalhead.

I began as a Metalhead, well, more completely honest, just rock.
Queen, 90's alternative, that sort of stuff. Early 2000s, a friend introduced me to Mudvayne and I knew I found a home with heavy metal (I know that Mudvayne is "Nu-metal", but I thought it was awesome at the time).

As I progressed through high school my tastes expanded HUGELY with the introduction of old school thrash metal(Metallica, Annihilator). And later on, I started listening to more Melodic Metal(Soilwork) from the Northern Europe area which progressed into Goth Metal (Asrai, 69 Eyes). Even more recently, I've discovered a new love for Symphonic Metal (Trail of Tears, Mirrorthrone).

MY THOUGHTS
-------------------
I think that my genres of music has influenced me quite a bit. I never dressed in black before listening to metal in middle school and I thought being "Goth" was something evil. Although, I suppose I was destined for it, I was always the weird little kid who liked horror movies.

I know I'm going to come off snobbish, but you can try and fit into Goth, but if you don't have the mindset, you're just going to fail. Also, music is a big influence on a culture, but it's not the sole thing that defines it, the behavior also is a big part of it.

Good luck with the project, I hope that I've helped.
