Why do you, personally, favor Liberals over Conservatives?
The difference between liberals and conservatives is a fundamental difference on how to approach problems.Let’s take abortion as a great example, because I legitimately think that the abortion debate highlights everything that is radically different between the political solutions offered by liberals and conservatives.I am going to need to summon all the willpower I have to not debate this topic.I would say that I am pro-choice. I know plenty of conservatives who are pro-life, and they are always of the opinion that abortion should be illegal (except in the cases of rape), but we agree on one thing: We want the number of abortions in this country to decrease, to zero if possible.Well, what are the solutions that conservatives offer? If we make abortion illegal, then women will be disincentivized from having an abortion, and that will reduce the number of abortions that occur. (If anyone has a better conservative position on solving abortion, leave them in the comments and I’ll add to this section of the answer.)What are the solutions that liberals offer? If we keep abortion legal, but then have things like widespread access to birth control, comprehensive sexual education and paid maternity leave, fewer women will be incentivized to have an abortion.Do you see the difference? Conservatives are focused on stopping the individual person from having an abortion, while liberals want to create an America in which there is no need to have an abortion. Both of these positions are tenable, but the reason I am a liberal is because this distinction matters to me.Let’s take another example. Neil deGrasse Tyson, while on the set of Hot Ones, said the following in reference to flat-earthers: “I don’t want to debunk your thoughts. I want to create an educational system that is incapable of producing a human being with these thoughts.”And that explains, better than I ever could, why I’m a liberal.
