Why Does My Cartilage Piercing Hurt

Why does my cartilage piercing hurt so bad?

Piercings that go through ear cartilage and not just skin like the normal ear lobe ones are not easy piercings in to heal and they have their ups and downs while doing so.

Meaning..they can irritated and swollen for long, bumps and be formed around them etc. All this goes a way with proper care but can happen again days or even months later during the healing period.

These piercings take 1 fully heal to fully heal. During that period you might experience :

Swelling, extreme pain, redness, sore-tender piercing, bleeding. All these are normal and to be expected.

You don't want to see : Yellow or green fluids or pus coming out because this will indicate an infection. White and clear discharge is normal and part of the healing process.

You had to do sea salt soaks twice a day since day 1 to clean it and keep doing that for the whole healing period to avoid/treat infections, bumps and also help the piercing to heal. This is not a suggestion but the needed aftercare for new piercing, especially cartilage ones.

How to properly do them :

Warm water (8oz) + non iodized salt (1/4 teaspoon) mixed in a cup. Soak the piercing in for 10 minutes, 2 times a day. Use a q-tip to clean around the piercing thoroughly, rinse with water and pat it dry with a paper towel.
Non iodized salt is cheap and easy to find.

Also you should never ever at any case twist the jewelry on an unhealed piercing. If you do the crusties that are naturally created and attached to it will keep scratching the inside part of the piercing - the actual wound- causing trauma, delaying the healing process and risking infections.

Some kinds still thing that if they don't twist the jewelry it will somehow get stuck to the skin and never move again which of course if a big joke and can never happen. On a freshly cleaned piercing the jewelry can slide in and out easily with the slightest push.

To ease the pain and make the piercing feel more comfortable you could take some Ibuprofen and use ice cubes wrapped with clean paper towels. Apply on the piercing for a few seconds, remove and re-apply.

Until the piercing is fully healed don't : touch it, twist the jewelry, change the jewelry or take it out, sleep on it, play with it, but only touch it with freshly washed hands to clean it.

Why does my cartilage piercing still hurt?

First, you should have waited a little longer to take out
the piercings, you may have harmed the healing tissue
since cartilage takes longer to heal.

Usually you should wait at least six months before really
attempting to take out the jewelry.

You might be aggravating the healing tissue if you are excessively
putting the earrings in and out, or twisting them.

Also, if you got your cartilage pierced with a gun, then that may explain it.
Guns are very dangerous and can cause severe damage. If a gun was used, your cartilage may be getting ready to collapse as far as i know.

I hope I helped:)

CARTILAGE PIERCING-Hurt?

the healing process is worse than the actual piercing, although it will hurt more than regular lobe piercings.
but PLEASE, DO NOT GET IT DONE WITH A GUN!!!

go to a professional, they do it with a needle and just stick it through then put the jewelry in. (some unprofessional places do it with a piercing gun, but that carries high risk of infection since they cant be cleaned and carry lots of bacteria and sometimes disease) also dont get it done with a gun because your cartilage can collapse! (click to see example of what i mean)

http://wiki.bmezine.com/index.php/Ear_co...
you could also get cauliflower ear which is very common as well...
http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=...
also guns crush the cartilage which is bad and makes it take sometimes YEARS to heal.
if you get it done with a needle it will take at least 6 months up to 1 year to heal. do not take it out nomatter what (or change the jewelry) before it is healed.

oh and whoever actually uses piercing guns is not a professional (like people at the mall or claires) they might make a mistake with your piercingh and it can come out looking bad or pierced the wrong way. (for claires i know that the only training they have is a 30 minute video on piercing)
they will also tell you to twist a piercing while its healing which is BAD advice, you DO NOT want to twist the piercing because the "crusties" can get inside infecting it and/or irritating it a lot. it also lets bacteria in.

also you need to clean it everyday with something like H2Ocean but NEVER peroxide or rubbing alcohol which will dry it out and can cause infection and/or it will reject.
sea salt soaks a few times a day also work.

they hurt more than regular ear piercings because cartilage is somewhat like thin bone. you wont be able to sleep on whatever side its on for about a month and itll just be uncomfortable and sometimes hurt afterwards. also for a while it will hurt when your taking a shower because your hair always gets caught in it and its VERY painful the first month and will still hurt after that for a few months, but not INTENSE pain.

Does a tragus or cartilage piercing hurt?

I have all three!

I'll be completely honest here. I know you're probably aware it depends on your individual tolerance level.... but that doesn't help you out at all as for what to expect!

I heard rumors about how tragus piercings were especially painful, and horror stories about how you can actually hear the cartilage being punctured with a snapping sound. I didn't experience this at all. I didn't hear the cartilage popping. It hurt a little bit, but it was a pinch just like my nose piercing. It didn't really bleed, but it was sore for about a week afterward, and the after care is a little more extensive than a regular cartilage piercing.

The regular cartilage piercing was almost painless for me.... but that was the actual piercing part itself. The after care was HORRIBLE. My cartilage was sore for almost 6 months. I mean... no talking on the phone on that side, no sleeping on that side, no hugs on that side. I've had it 3 years now and it STILL gets sore sometimes if I sleep on it. I think it's because it's in a position where it can easily get knocked around.

While I've never had infections with either piercing, they have their own issues. I've spoken to several other girls who say their cartilage is still sore sometimes years after they've gotten it. While the tragus healed much easier, it developed some hypertrophic scarring which is unsightly and I'm still trying to get rid of.

So... it's up to you. I don't mean to scare you off, I'm just trying to give you the facts. In my opinion... you should get both! One on each side of your head ;]. Good luck. They both look great, and neither really hurts less than the other.

Does getting your cartilage pierced hurt?

No, getting your cartilage pierced doesn't hurt much. I just remember feeling air. And I was so happy about having a piercing when I got it I didn't even feel much pain(: You should get it on the side your don't sleep on. Trust me, you don't wanna sleep on that baby for a while!
You need to get it with a needle, not a gun. Guns shatter your cartilage and hurt a lot more, so I've heard. Needles are just more safe. Get it done professionally, please!
When you clean it, clean it with antibacterial soap(pump prefered brand: Dial). Don't use alcohol or peroxide or anything like that! Just antibacterial soap.
Cartilage piercings are super fun! I just got mine at the end of December and I love it!
Also, make sure your hands are clean if you are touching it, try to keep your hair away from it.
You can change the earring out after 4 to 6 weeks, I think.
PS: Get a hoop, not a stud. Hoops are cooler!:3

Should my cartilage piercing still hurt after a year?

I've have a cartilage piercing for a little over a year now. It still hurts when it gets moved and touched.

When I first got it, I cleaned it three times a day and all the stuff they tell you to do when you get it. I never took it out until a month ago because of a bump I had on the back. Left it out for about 10 minutes then put it back in and it was fine.

Lately however it's really tender. The outside parts are fine although there's a small bump in the back. It's the inside where it hurts, like when the piercing is running though my ear. I clean the earring and my ear before I put my earrings back in and I continue to clean my ear daily.

Is there any reason why it's hurting so much after so long? I'm probably going to go get it checked out from an official person later but I wanted to hear if you had any experience with this before I did go.

Some extra details: I got it done at Claire's with a gun. It's the third time I've had it done up there. First time was perfect but had to take it out due to NJROTC in high school. It got infected and I had to let it heal up. Second time I got it done it got a major infection and I had to take it out and let it heal up again.

Please don't tell me about how bad a gun is to do it up there, shattering cartilage, damaging it, ect. I already know. I would just like some information as if this should still hurt after a year and what could be causing it.

If you need more information, ask and I'll update this! Thank you very much :D

Does a cartilage piercing hurt really badly?

It's different for everyone and depends what type of cartilage piercing. The ones which go through two layers of cartilage would hurt more than a helix.

For me I didn't feel much pain when I got it pierced, it was much more painful when they inserted the jewelry and there was this tingling sensation in my arm. It's been fine ever since, it's bleed a few times but it's healing much more quickly than I thought since I've taken really good care of it.

I've had lobe piercings that took 2 years to heal because I wasn't doing proper after care and cartilage infections can be nasty so be careful of what you might be getting into. I get piercings for the look and expression I don't really care much for pain, if you really want a piercing like so, then pain doesn't really matter.

Does getting your cartilage pierced hurt?

Nope it doesn't hurt at all!
but it depends on your pain tolerance because some of my friends cried when they got it and some thought it hurt a little and some thought it didn't hurt at all!
get it on your right.....but if your not sure buy a clip on or stick a diamond on the your ear to see which one looks better.Mine is on my right and my left.
It only hurts sleeping the day you get it pierced because i sleep on my side so when i put my head on my side [my ear is touching the pillow] it burns and hurts alot [well not to much but a little]..but that's just me.
make sure after you get it pierced not to touch it that much unless your putting alcohol on it.also everyday in the morning twirl the earring around just once so it wont get stuck.[sometimes it will get crusty so that's why im saying to twirl it.
it will hurt for 1 month but it needs months to heal and till you can take the earring out out.
Also MAKE SURE TO ALWAYS CLEAN IT WITH ALCOHOL! LIKE 3 TIMES A DAY! 1 IN THE MORNING 1 IN THE AFTERNOON AND 1 RIGHT BEFORE YOU GO TO BED!
[:
PS;if your ear turns green [not the ear just a little on the hole] then dont wear fake earrings on your cartilage or it can get infected and when it gets infected it hurts like H*ll
