Why Does Tuition Triple When You Go Out Of State

Why is international tuition so high?

At state-sponsored schools in the United States, a state resident gets a lower rate of tuition because state tax funds are used to support the school, usually through land taxes. It is assumed that the parents of residents have been paying land taxes directly or indirectly, so they and their children benefit. Both out-of-state and international students have to pay higher tuition to balance what they did not pay in taxes.

Stony brook dorms my daughter is in a triple?

this is a forced situation which i find to be unfair! 3 girls in an unconditioned room no bigger than a closet?

speaking of closets there are only 2, 2 dressers, and 2 desks!

she has financial aid and it states that she is to have a double.

i also have to pay an additional $1000 because financial aide didn't cover the full tuition and i can't afford to pay it because i get SSI.

i am trying desperately to find a way to reduce the dorm fee so i think that it should be drastically reduced from $3500+ since she isn't actually in a double.

the school states that they will give her a 5 dollar a day credit on her account for the inconvenience but if you add it up that still doesn't seem fair

i want to call the school to voice my opinion about this but i don't want to be hostile and sound dumb

i'm sorry if my question sounds confusing but i'm really upset about this and the funny thing is my daughter doesn't seem bothered at all yet!

but i'm sure as time goes by and you know how teen girls can be .. she will become bothered

so i have 2 questions

1. can i get a reduction in the dorm room fee
2. are there programs that will help me a single parent with SSI and public assistance to pay the balance of my daughters tuition fee.
my daughter already received the maximum financial aide and loans according to the school

thank u for any help

Has anyone ever triple majored at the Ohio State University?

I didn’t go to OSU, but I was two classes short of a triple major when I graduated from undergrad. Since I have a hard time believing I’m that special, and based on the size of OSU, it would logically follow that someone has.The real question is, why on earth would anyone want to do that? The only reason I did was because I started college at 15, changed my major a few times because what 15 year old knows exactly what they want to be when they grow up, and I felt like if I was paying for full time tuition, then I was going to get my monies worth and take 18 credit hours each and every semester. It’s what I did, but I don’t recommend it to anyone. Get a degree and get out. You can do most learning on your own for free if you are motivated enough.

Why do most colleges in the USA charge international students almost double the tuition fees that they charge domestic students?

Different US colleges have set different norms for international students. They have exempted tax for students of quite a few countries. On the other hand the US citizens are liable to pay taxes. Talking about almost double fees, yes it is done to encourage and to provide privilege to native students.

Pros/cons of out of state college?

The out of state school that I am considering has a small campus with low tuition (lower than what I'd be paying at many in state schools). So, aside from the cost of attending out of state college, what are the cons, and what are the pros? (And when I say out of state, I mean way on the other side of the country-like 2000 miles away).

How do I convince my mom that she should let me go out-of-state for college?

So I really want to go to West Virginia University and applied but my mom really doesn't want me to go. She wants me to go in-state or community college. But there are no in state colleges that I am interested in and I'm sure I can get into Duke or UNC with my 3.0 gpa.

However my parents pay for me to attend a private school that costs $16,000 each year. She also allowed my sister to go to very high level college in Pennsylvania, UPENN Wharton, I don't really know the name but it's in Philadelphia. However she also got a scholarship because she is extremely smart.

I just want the same chance as her, I really don't want to go to community college. And besides West Virginia's out of state tuition is about the same as the school I go to now, it's only $19,500 but plus the room and board and essentials it's about $29,000. The college that my sister went to is about nearly doubled that amount.

If I do accepted I would really like to go there. How can I convince her?

Why do colleges charge double/triple the amount of fees for international students?

At least with regard to US public universities, there are at least two factors:Those students’ parents have not helped fund the university through their tax dollarsBecause they can

Should I attend UC Berkeley EECS or UIUC CS (in-state)?

My daughter is finishing up her third year at UC Berkeley. She is not an EECS major but she is in the College of Engineering. My son is nearing the end of his first year as a Computer Engineering major at UIUC. We are Illinois residents. Having observed the first year experiences of both my kids, I highly recommend UIUC if you are an Illinois resident. You need to be pretty thick skinned to endure that first year in engineering at Cal. The competitive nature of the other students and the curves will make you feel like you are going to flunk out your first year. My son, on the other hand, has found great camaraderie amongst other engineering students at UIUC. Both schools will provide an excellent education. Cal will definitely be more well known world wide, but UIUC for CS will open lots of doors for you too. A huge number of California residents that don’t get into Stanford or Berkeley choose UIUC for CS. My son is friends with many of them, and they all seem to be stellar students. UIUC is very well respected in the Bay area, and many Silicon Valley based employers come to UIUC to recruit. My husband is a past UIUC Computer Engineering graduate and recruits every year at UIUC. He has lost many excellent candidates to Facebook, Google and Apple. On the flipside, very few Chicago based employers recruit at Cal most likely because Cal students typically don’t want to leave the Bay area. You may want to consider where you want to live after you complete your degree. Networking will be better as an Illinois grad in the Midwest. Likewise, at Berkeley, you will make friends and have a better professional network post graduation if you intend to live in the Bay area. They are very strict on residency at Cal. Unlike another poster that claimed you can become a resident after two years as a Cal student, I do not believe that to be true. You need to plan to pay out-of-state tuition for all four years. Also, there is somewhat of a housing crisis UC Berkeley. You will not be able to get a dorm room your second year if you would like to stay in a dorm. Rent will run you double if not triple what you will pay for off campus housing at UIUC. The only way for many Cal students to afford their rent is to pack three, four or five students into each bedroom with as many as 10 or more sharing one kitchen and bathroom in a single apartment.
