Every time I use the washing machine the toilet + bathtub fills with water. What's wrong?

As I said in the question, using the washing machine causes both the toilet and the bathtub to fill with water. Also, when I flush the toilet the bathtub fills with some water. In addition, the bathtub drains slowly and you can hear it draining from the sink, which is unusual. I had a guy put some very strong acid down the bath tub and the washer pipe and it didn't do anything. Any help?

Note: I do not know whether I am hooked up to a sceptic tank or to city sewage. The city claims I am hooked up to sewage but the city has a reputation for charging for sewage services for houses that are so old that they are actually still hooked up to an old septic tank. I can't find any septic tank openings in my yard but there is a patch of this purple weed on my lawn that is in the shape of a septic tank and a specialist told me that chances are there is a septic tank under there. He was the same guy who dumped the acid down there but the problem was beyond his expertise.

Washer and Dryer ok to sit unused?

We recently moved into a house that included a washer and dryer, but we already have our own. The landlord isn't willing/able to remove the W/D. We plan on living here for approximately 3 years. Will it hurt our washer and dryer to store it in the garage for that long without using them? We really hate to sell them, since we'll likely need it when we do move out in 2 - 3 years, but don't want to damage it. Any info on whether it will damage them , or any tips on how to keep them in good condition while they sit would be appreciated!

Why would a washing machine cause a breaker to keep tripping?

When an electric motor starts, the momentary high load to get it moving generates a surge that can exceed the breakers rating and cause it to trip. Just because you have nothing else plugged into that wall plug does not mean that is the only outlet on the circuit, turn the breaker off and check if anything other outlets have lost power, may not even be in the same room. If there is nothing else on the circuit it should not trip the breaker, that would be an indication something is wrong with the motor or it's capacitor if so equipped..

If it trips after the motor is already running, it could be overloaded or there may be a short somewhere, or again there is a problem related to the motor, age is one of those things. The breaker can be faulty or under rated, most circuits are 15 or 20 amp and should easily be able to handle something like a washer, don't replace the breaker with a larger one or you can burn up the wiring.

As a simple diagnostic after you have made sure there really are no other things on the circuit, try plugging in a vacuum cleaner or a 1500 watt heater into the circuit instead of the washer, if they cause it to trip it's likely the circuit breaker, but you will likely need some diagnostic help from an electrician on this one.

Why does my washing machine smell like rotten eggs?

Week after week we are cleaning our soiled clothes. It gets dark in there and wet so this can be a breeding ground for mold mildew and the collection of soil. Here are a few things you can do in order to combat any odors that come up as a result of this. The first is to leave the washer door open after you finish using it. Do this for at least a few hours. This will allow moisture to escape and air the washer drum out.If the washer is already stinky leaving the door open won’t do much about the smell except keeping the smell from getting worse. The next thing you can do is put ¼ cup baking soda and equal water into the detergent container and then adding 2 cups of white vinegar to the drum. From there, run the washer like normal; this will help break down build up and kill mold and mildew. After you have done this if you still notice a smell or large spots of mildew, then mix together vinegar and water and scrub at the stain with the rough side of a sponge cloth. This is a little more hands on, but it’s an effective way to attack the source of the smell.closely inspect your washer for any hidden or tight spots that might be hosting the stinky mold or mildew. Knobs and the detergent container are often culprits, so look at those. If possible, remove the rubber gasket around the door, since water often seeps back there and mold can easily grow. Also some washers come with a cleaning setting if yours does you can also run this cycle through the washer you may or may not need to purchase some of the cleaner this setting requires.Hope this helps

Why does my laundry room smell like a sewer? What can be done to get the smell out?

I’m a master plumber as well as a builder and do phone consults each week for people that have sewer gas problems. Check out this photo and see if you understand what’s going on:The three most common sewer gas issues in laundry rooms are:dried-out floor drain or laundry sink drain (rare cause)new washing machine drain hose inserted in drain stand pipe (quite common)dirty washing machine growing mold and mildew (very common with HE machines)I took that photo above. It shows the common rough-in piping for a washing machine. After the drywall is installed, all you see is the white box in the upper left.Modern washing machines come now with a smaller flexible drain hose attached to the machines. Idiot installers insert the ENTIRE hose into the box above. If you make this mistake, you force the end of the hose PAST the U-shaped p-trap you see under the vertical stand pipe.Sewer gas will come back THROUGH the drain hose into the washing machine if the end of the hose is above the water line on the far side of the p-trap.You should only have about 1 foot of drain hose go down into the pipe that’s extends out the bottom of the box.Mildew and mold growing around / under the gaskets in HE washing machines also cause a sewer-gas-like odor. When the mold and mildew eject spores into the room air, the gas used to launch the spores has a foul odor. When millions of spores launch, you can imagine the stench.I find the best thing to clean mold and mildew is non-toxic oxygen bleach. Stain Solver is one brand, but there are many others out there. If you still have problems with sewer gas after checking the drains and hose length, arrange to have me call you on the phone.Just go to my Homepage - Ask the Builder website and use the Ask Tim page.Want more plumbing #HACKS? What do I do to drain water out of a washing machine if it stops working?

It is going to be a bit messy I am afraid. If the water will not drain out it means the water pump is not working. It is either burned out or blocked with fibres and won’t turn the impeller. You have to pull out the washing machine take off the back and disconnect the hose from the impeller. The water will start to drain from the drum so you need something under to catch all the water. There is going to be quite a lot depending on where the machine is in the cycle. Make sure the electricity is disconnected. Once the water is drained you can find out why the pump is not working. If the impeller is blocked then get all the crap out of it such as buttons, coins, fabric fibres etc. Make sure the impeller rotates freely after and then reconnect and see if it all works. If the electronics is broken the symptoms could be the same but the board would need replacing and not the pump components etcGood luck
