Why Dont People Use Pictures Of Themselves Here

Why do people post pictures of themselves smoking on facebook?

Marcus' answer is a good example of why. People smoke because they *think* that they look cool. They think it gives off an image of "I don't give a ***," when in actuality they just look quite stupid. $5.50 for a pack of Camels around here, so when I see people smoke I just see someone advertising their complete lack of self discipline.

Why do people send pornographics pics of themselves to you if you post a personals ad?

Most men are interested in seeing the goods before they make a buying decision (so to speak). If they posted a personals ad, they'd love to get back naked pictures of all the applicants who replied to it, and those pictures would be a significant part of what they considered when they decided who to reply to. Many of them think that women are (perhaps secretly) the same as them, that they care about whether their man has a big penis and a nice body. So they're just trying to be polite, doing for you what they'd like you to do for them if the positions were reversed. You'll be able to tell the most thoughtful one's, they'll have included a ruler or similar object for scale, and also a picture of their butt so you could check that out too.

Why do some people on Quora not use a real picture of themselves?

Well I like to toe the line of it a bit.I am a amateur photographer who doesn’t like taking pictures of myself. Selfies are not a thing in my world. But I come out of a entertainment production background and light has been a big part of my life for decades. So I like how light changes color, is distorted, reflected, or otherwise changed by objects and situations around us.Add into this the reality that I’m fairly private in such a public forum as Quora. I don’t have my city listed, I will never drop that name in my writing, and I don’t have a picture of my face nor link this site to my Facebook page.Which takes me to my photo. So I was at a fly-in at my local municipal airport which was really cheap to get in, like $5 cheap, and decided to take advantage of both my love of vintage aviation and the great light that day and take some shots. In the midst of all this aviation wonderfulness and some great light and shadow combinations I spot this beauty:And I look at that prop spinner and go “oooh shiny”So shiny. So very shiny. And there you have it. I mean it’s a bit chopped up and shrunk to become my profile pic but that’s the best you will see of me on this site until I change my mind on pictures or you hunt me down.

Why don't people like having their picture taken?

From my experience, many people don’t like having their picture taken because they don’t think they look good in photos. And like a lot of things in life, this tends to become a self fulfilling prophecy.I’m an avid photographer and have photographed many events & people over the years. Typically there is someone at the event who tells me that they don’t like having their picture taken, because, “they never look good in photos.” Often this person is attractive — so it’s usually not a matter of their looks.Usually I’ll get 1 or 2 photos of this person — if they agree to be photographed at all. Because they believe they don’t look good, and don’t like having their picture taken — they rush through the photos and don’t look natural or happy. Then, I often run into the other extreme. The person who enjoys getting their photo taken, and happily poses for multiple shots - trying different angles, poses, etc. Often this person is objectively no better or worse looking than the person who told me how horrible they look in pictures. Yet, this person is happier behind the camera, and it shows. When it comes time to post or distribute the photos, who do you think looks better? Like most everything else in life, taking a good photo takes practice, and if someone doesn’t like having their picture taken, they aren’t going to get much practice. Yet, those that like having their picture taken, generally get some good ones (along with the bad ones).I’ve also heard that some cultures believe that photography can steal your soul, although I rarely get that response in the US when someone tells me they don’t like having their picture taken.

Why is it, that people don't look things up for themselves?

Good question, and one I ask myself about 20 times a day on here. Either people are too lazy, or they just don't know how google works, or what the search bar is for. It especially surprises me because I'm old enough to have never had anything to do with a computer until my late forties and it didn't take me long to figure out that the computer functions like a giant reference library. I'm amazed that people who are young enough to have grown up using a computer apparently don't know that. I wonder where all the tax dollars went, the ones I paid so students in my local schools could have access to computers and learn to deal with modern technology, the taxes I had to pay for them to have computers when I couldn't afford my own computer.

I like answering questions when it's something that's a little hard to find out, but when it's something that I can find out within 60 seconds by googling, my answer is sometimes something like "look up a recipe for chocolate cupcakes and follow that recipe", or "google chocolate cupcake recipe". Something along the lines of "you can feed a man a fish and he won't be hungry for one day, but teach a man to fish and he won't be hungry for the rest of his life."

I also think we have, lately, a culture of " I don't know how, and it's hard to learn, why don't you do it for me?", an unwillingness to do some of the hard work of developing your own skills. We seem to be, increasingly, people who just couldn't be bothered learning anything outside a few things we feel comfortable with already. The good old American work ethic, the one that says that whatever it is that has to be done we can do it, the one that built this continent, seems to be in short supply.

When people use a scary picture or slogan for their profile instead of a picture of themselves, do you ever wonder why they want to be represented in that way?

on facebook my picture's theresa may scowling, tinted green and turned upside down. i did it for a laugh and because she used to get in my way a lot before becoming my unelected prime minister. people who know me know what i look like, i don't need zuckerberg selling my face to anyone to let people know i'm me. it'll be the same for people who use a fake picture on here. i happen to use a picture of my own face on this site because i look so much like the default blue man that it doesn't make a difference

Why do guys post pics of themselves in their profiles holding fish they caught?

I have an ex boyfriend that has one posted all the time on yahoo and on myspace. I trully believe that the fish is there to distract from their other shortcummings.

Do people use fake avatar pics on here?

Clearly, most of us can and do use fake avatars or the Yahoo avatars.
It can be dangerous to put personal information or pictures of yourself over the internet where random strangers can see it, so I prefer to use fictional names and avatars. You don't want someone finding out who you are, tracking/stalking you, etc. do you? Because those are the dangers of posting your real self online. I'd prefer to stay safe.

Most people use celebrities but I prefer anime characters.
My current avatar is of Shion Sonozaki from Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni.

Why do Chinese tend not to use photos of themselves as their social network image?

I agree it is a large generalization, as on many Chinese social networks, such as Renren (a Chinese version of facebook), the majority of users actually do use their own photos, but there are exceptions. I've seen some friends using others' images or objects/sceneries as profile pictures, there are two cases: they are either extremely private, or somewhat not very satisfied with their own looks. The usage of random photos as profile pictures comes from an era when there were no social networks, just online forums, which were very pro-anonymity. It was completely ok for people to use any picture they like to represent themselves, and social networks that broke such anonymity, such as facebook/instagram/anything similar in that nature, became a thing in China a couple of years later than they did in the US. So some people might still be used to the idea of using any picture they want to represent their online image on today's social networks.PS: If you are specifically talking about WeChat, I don't think people on WeChat think it's a big deal not using your real photo for a profile pic. If you look at the history of WeChat and nature, you will understand why it is different from other social networks such as Facebook/Instagram. Before WeChat, Chinese people are used to using QQ, an IM software from the same company that later developed Wechat. I believe QQ was originally designed to be anonymous, even though nowadays, it is mainly used to chat with friends. Therefore, on QQ, users have their own avatars, which could be anything. Deriving from QQ, WeChat, a combination of IM and social network, shares almost the same user group in China. So while people used to Facebook/Instagram tend to think it's the norm to use their own photos on WeChat, to many Chinese users, that tiny picture on their profiles might just be like their QQ avatars, which can be anything.
