Why Have I Never Seen A Patient In The Hospital Curse Out The Staff Because They Couldn

Have you ever seen a patient yell at their nurse?

Yes. Everyday!Unfortunately, this is business as usual for nurses. Patients and their families are often upset and lash out at the staff in hospitals. Ninety percent of nurses have experienced verbal abuse.[1]I had a nurse that worked for me who was 7 months pregnant kicked in the abdomen by a belligerent patient. Another, was choked unconscious by the brother of a patient that died. These are the ones that turned violent, verbal abuse is an almost daily occurrence in the emergency room.[2]As a manager, I was often called in to diffuse these situations. My experience has led me to believe that people are losing their ability to act rationally. Somehow we, as a society, have accepted violence as a negotiation method to get our way. It’s become the status quo. For this reason, laws have been passed making it a felony to attack healthcare workers.[3] It’s still not getting better. Prosecution is complicated and only deals with one at a time.I was once told by a father, “If you don’t get that IV in the first stick, I’m going to my car and get my gun and kill you.”I didn’t start the IV but did call the police. They found a gun in his car and he was arrested for making terroristic threats. This subject is a little too close to home for myself. I am no longer at the bedside treating patients for this very reason. The majority of people are kind and appreciative of nurses. The ones that are not have made the profession unbearable. No one has the right to verbally abuse another person no matter how bad they feel. It is hard to imagine what nurses go through on a daily basis. It is really really bad and getting worse.Footnotes[1] Over 90% of nurses experience violence or verbal abuse[2] https://www.google.com/amp/s/hea...[3] Violence in the Workplace: What's Being Done to Protect our Nation's Healthcare Workforce

Is it okay for a nurse to curse at a patient?

O man. Would you curse at a customer or client in your line of work? Probably not. Does someone tick you off so much that you let ine slip every now and then…it’s possible but not professional. The psych floor is a difficult place to work. They often have very violent cases and a high turn over rate. Theire is constant manipulation of the staff and the system. The mental health system is totally broken and it makes it difficult for the nurse and the patient. It is a high stress area and sometimes the stress caused by a certain situation can be redirected in another direction (in this case the other direction was you).I don't think it will help you heal to hold a grudge against this nurse. It's best to just appricate the good nurses and try and not to let one situation ruin your view of the nursing profession or the institution.Whether you like it or not, you are fortunate to have found a place where are you to able obtain help. Many people are unable to because of lack of beds and resources. Try and utilize your time there to heal and rejuvenate and focus on the positive aspects of your care!

Italian curse called the mal occhio ? Pronounced "maloik"?

Does any one know anything about the Italian curse called the mal occhio ? Pronounced "Maloik". Please post if you've had any experience with it, or know anything of it.

Bad L & D staff.. anyone else have horror stories?

The only thing that happened with me was they told me it's not safe to use ice for the episiotomy with my first. So I went for 2 weeks swolen to the point of not being able to move or breath hardly..so bad I actually had to show my mom and she said it looked like the stitches were about to burst. That sooo sucked. 2 days of using ice I was fine.

My second was that they had put me as a courtesy stay the second night into the thrid morning after delivery bacause they wanted to monitor my sons jaundice levels. Well they came in at 1 and told me "pack your stuff and get going" My husband was not even there so I told them that he doesn't have a cell and should be back in an hour. They then start taking all of my stuff and putting it in the corner tell me to get out of bed..turn down the room and then my husband got there and they pushed us out of the room within minutes. Another episiotomy and I asked for a wheel char like with my first. The lady said.."oh you've dont this before, I'm not pushing you all the way down there". So 4 stories later The car seat wouldnt go in the car right and a supply delivery truck was parked behind our car. My husband was begging the nurse to help figure out why the car seat wouldnt secure. She said" i doubt you'll have a fatal crash between here and home youll be fine" and walked away. I was appaled and in tears. I don't know what standard practice is, and didnt know if she had done anything that was worth reporting to a superior over. So I never filed a complaint. But she was horribly rude and unhelpfull. I was always sure to be as polite as humanly possible even durring the labor and delivery. I did'nt feel so hot to have her act like that. I then wished I'd have gave her a good cussing out while giving birth...oh well.

EDIT- please excuse the typos..I was typing fast lol

Do you think I'm cursed, or am I just unlucky ?

There are some people who believe that we actually choose what our life will be like, once we're born- we select lives with strange, and sometimes painful experiences, in order to help us learn and grow. Those folks tend to be into reincarnation.

I've had a pretty rough life, too- but I can tell you that for every strange, painful, freaky, abusive, etc. situation I've survived, I learned new skills. I joke sometimes that "I'm still here, and it's not from lack of trying by others!" You will find, as you get older, that these things will have made you stronger. Can't promise you that your world will someday be sunny and rosy all the time- but it will settle down, and you may just find that your talents and skills will get you to a better place in the world. Good luck- and try to think positive thoughts! :o)
