What evidence is there to support the hypothesis of panspermia?

If you don't know what panspermia is, you don't know enough to answer this question validly IMHO.

Fred Hoyle was a fan of this idea. Having looked into it, the chances of life evolving from a few chemicals seems very unlikely to me (you are more likely to win 155 games of Lotto consecutively than for life to evolve). I accept evolution after basic life has arisen, but the creation of life in the first place leaves me wondering. What is the latest scientific consensus?

In machine learning, what is the effect of reducing hypothesis space on overfitting?

Nothing per se.While reducing your hypothesis space typically reduces overfitting, it is not true in general. For example, if you chuck out the set of all affine functions from your hypothesis space while keeping the family of n-degree polynomials (where n > 1), you will continue to overfit all the datasets that you overfitted with your old set.The best (and really only) way to reduce overfitting without doing any data hacks is to reduce the capacity of your hypothesis space to overfit (by looking at such properties as VC dimension, Rademacher/Kolmogorov complexity, norms of higher-order derivatives for functional regressions, distribution of cross-validation error w/ bootstrapping, numerical stability of your fitting algorithm, etc). If by reducing your hypothesis space you coincidentally decrease its capacity to overfit, then hoorah. If not, then nothing has changed despite your hypothesis space being smaller.

What is your understanding of the difference between a hypothesis, a theory, and a law in science?

Examples: I am assuming your question is related to science and mathematics , not political.A HypothesisDuring the early era of Space exploration related interests, it was strongly hypothesized that the Planet Mars was inhabited by the Martians. Later with actual photographs, space crafts and satellite data, that hypothesis was rejected. So, a hypothesis is a statement or a conjecture that can be made based on a gut feeling or available partial information only to be rejected or not rejected later when actual data or evidences are scientifically studied. It is a conjecture that needs to be established with actual facts.A TheoryA Theory is a statement of facts that has been studied, and verified empirically and / or experimentally. For example, In Cloud physics, formation of rains or ice crystals at the cloud base depends on the temperature, density of moisture and other thermodynamic properties. This aspect was studied for years empirically, just by observation, verified from actual data and experiments. Then formulated a theory on it. So, as far as this Earth is considered, such an established theory holds.A LawA law is formulated or derived so it expresses the summary of a theory in a particular topic, in mathematical or non-mathematical terms. It is used in studying the topic of interest, findings and researching into enhancements and to apply in inventions, explorations or discovering. One well known law in Mathematical ( Theoretical ) Physics is theory of Relativity that is being used in Space Explorations, but also at the same time being verified, if it holds for ALL situations in Space.

I need help with Earth-Space Science questions. About scientific investigations?

I'm trying to understand this lesson. No I am not trying to cheat, I Just need some help and any tips/and or advice is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks so much.

These are questions off of this:

Christopher and Kate noticed that after a rainstorm some of the rocks in their yard appear to shrink. They wondered how the mass of the rocks changed when dissolved in water. To determine this, Kate purchased a variety of rocks from a local shop, carefully recording the types of rocks in a data chart. Christopher gathered rocks from the backyard to add to the rocks Kate purchased. They measured each rock's initial mass; then they inserted the rocks one by one into 100 milliliters of water and measured the mass of each rock after it had sat in the water for five minutes. Both Christopher and Kate concluded that store-bought rocks do not dissolve in water. They also concluded that to get rocks that dissolve in water they must be gathered directly from the yard.

1. Describe why the investigation above is not adequate to explain what types of rocks will dissolve in water.
2. Using what Christopher and Kate have already observed, suggest a possible hypothesis regarding how the mass of a rock changes when placed in water. Identify the independent and dependent variables.
3. Describe, in detail, a procedure to test your hypothesis. Identify the controlled variables.

I tried to answer these questions, but I'm not sure if I'm right.

I need help with my earth space science work please?

I have 7 years of University education with a masters degree in Nursing so please listen to what i have to say. To properly learn each assignment it is vitally important that you, yourself, put the time & the effort into your own assignments. Sure i could answer your questions but what would you learn? Very little. It putting in the time for each assignment yourself and do so regularly is where you will actually learn and then you will feeel better about your future.

What is another way a hypothesis is important in a scientific method?

The question is not clear, but I assume it is about how hypothesis are important in the scientific method.Unless in mathematics, where we get things which are absolutely true or false, science does not decree absolute truths. Instead, the scientific method is a step by step process, where hypothesis are the steps. An hypothesis is always useful, even when it happens to be false. Because this hypothesis allows to check things and better understand them.An excellent example of this is the notion of aether, which in the 19th century science was an hypothetical substance filling space, conducing forces while not impeding the movement of objects. However this hypothesis was proved false by the Michelson Morley experiment. For people grasping at materialism, this was a catastrophe. But thinkers just knew they had to search the truth in another direction. It is Einstein who solved the puzzle, with Relativity. So this is how a false hypothesis was used for some time as a foot step, until a better foot step was found.

What is hypothesis in machine learning?

In a machine learning problem where the input is denoted by [math]\mathbf{x}[/math] and the output is [math]y[/math]In order to do machine learning, there should exist a relationship (pattern) between the input and output values. Lets say that this the function[math]y = f (\mathbf{x}) [/math], this known as the target function. However, [math]f(.)[/math] is unknown function to us.  so machine learning algorithms try to guess a ``hypothesis'' function [math]h(\mathbf{x})[/math] that approximates the unknown [math]f(.)[/math], the set of all possible hypotheses is known as the Hypothesis set [math]H(.) [/math], the goal is the learning process is to find the final hypothesis that best approximates the unknown target function.Different machine learning models have different hypothesis sets, For example the 2d- perceptron has the hypothesis set[math] H(\mathbf{x}) = \{sign(w_1 * x_1 + w_2 *x_2 + w_0)      \forall w_0, w_1, w_2 \}[/math]The following slide, Courtesy of Prof. Yasser Abu Moustafa Caltech, shows that relationships.

What scientific hypothesis sounds fringe (crazy) but is actually plausible?

There is a visual phenomenon called ‘inattentional blindness’. It has a few other names, but this seems to be the consensus term.Watch this[1][2], and follow the instructions:WOOOOOWWWWWW!!! (Well, I hope you’re gobsmacked). There are many variations of this phenomenon. It can happen during screen flickers or eye-blinks[3]:Or when there are distractors[4] - like raindrops or mud-splashes on a car windscreen:Or when the change happens v e r y s l o w l y[5]:Double WOOOOOOOOWWWWWWW, amirite? Now, a hypothetical consequence of this phenomenon is that, contrary to our belief that our internal world is a richly-interpolated, Technicolor, multi-modal Mind Palace, our memory is in fact a shitty old photo album of monochrome and Polaroids: half the snaps have fallen out, the rest being stained, torn, degraded, or having been cut up by our baby sister - and maybe one of the whole lot has the details written on the back.We only think our memory is so fabulous because we have the world to remind us. There is a piss-poor internal framework, but the visual world is our aide memoire.Consciousness is not inside us: it is Out There[6], reminding us who and what we are, and how it all comes together. We are but cogs in the Sol III supercomputer.WOOOOOOWWWWWWW…Also, read everything J Kevin O’Regan writes here.Footnotes[1] Daniel Simons -- Videos[2] Daniel Simons[3] J.
