Technically one could join SMS technology (over SMPP) with Skype or other messaging services. The problem is addressability. How could an SMS user address you as a Skype user? And even if you could put a Skype username in an SMS recipient fields, how could the network and the SMS Centre (unambiguously) know to look for you as a recipient on Skype? Some SMS Centres vendors offer tricks that may help a little bit with this but the business case is very poor: why would  operators reconfigure all their networks (a HUGE job) for this? Where is the resulting surplus in revenue?

Why can't I receive SMS text messages on Yahoo Messenger when offline?

You can enable that from your computer. In Messenger, click Messenger on the Tool bar and scroll to Sign into a Mobile Device, during the course of signing up, you're going to see the option, Automatically sign me into my mobile phone whenever I log out of Messenger.

Fill in the box and continue with your registration. Once done, Yahoo will send you a 4 digit code acknowledging the set-up and from there, you'll be good to go.

Good luck!

Why can't my iPhone 5s send text messages?

There could be several reasons for this. Here's a helpful link from the Apple support center:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3497582?start=30

Try the things discussed and keep trying until it works. You might want to make a Google voice or a fake text service number to see if the message sends or not.

I cannot receive SMS text messages from non-iPhone users until I turn on cellular data?

Are you sure you're just turning off your data connection, and not your entire cellular connection (a la airplane mode)? Also important: are these text conversations with just one other person, or group texts?

EDIT: are you able to receive SMS from iPhone users (aka if they force their phones to use text messages and not iMessage)? This is probably a carrier/network problem, and you should contact Page Plus customer service.

Why am I getting a "content not supported" message when I try to send text messages?

Probably. Try this:

Access the SMS Message Center Number
From the standby screen, press Menu.
Scroll to and select Messaging.
Scroll to and select Message settings.
Scroll to and select Text.
Scroll to and select Message centers.
Scroll to and select SmartChip Message Center.
Verify the "Message center no" (it should read +13123149810) and select Save.

Also go in to your Inbox; Outbox; and Sent messages and delete everything you do not need.

If none of that works then try a master reset:
NOTE: Performing a master reset will reset all settings to the factory defaults. Names and numbers saved in the address book will not be deleted.

From the standby screen, press Menu.
Scroll to and select Settings.
Scroll to and select Reset device.
Enter current security code, press OK.
NOTE: Default security code is 12345.
A notification screen will be displayed.

If all of this fails then you will need to contact customer service at 1-800-331-0500 and please call from a different phone

Text messaging doesn't use "data" as defined by cell phone networks-- if you can make and receive calls, you can send text messages, even if you can't connect to the internet. To disable data on an iPhone, look in Settings under General --> Network. Turn off "Cellular Data". It's probably not necessary to also explicitly turn off 3G networking but go ahead and do that too. With this change the phone will connect to the voice network and send and receive text messages. It will also work with WiFi, when available. It won't use any cell network data.Keep in mind that accessing the voice network may still be very expensive, depending on who your phone carrier is and what countries you're traveling in.

SMS Messages??? I just recently got a boost mobile phone and cant tell who my text are from?

That happened to me when i first got mine. Call 1888BOOST4U, and tell them your problem. They will make it so your messages go into your inbox instead of SMS. And you will see who the texts are from.

This has happened to me in the past too, what I usually do is click on “Try using a different method” or whatever it’s called, and then I click on “Send verification code to *** ********* (represents my number). There’s an additional piece of information there, though, which is something along the lines of “Standard rates will apply”. Now, I have never checked if it had any cost attached to that method, but after I’ve used it, I was always able to log into my account. If there’s something wrong with your number, then… well, tough luck. You can try to contact Google Support directly and ask them what's up, or you could go to your service provider and check with them too. I’ve had an issue where some of these gateways or whatever they are were blocked by the service provider, so it might be that too. Finally, if you can’t do anything about it and want to create a new account, then just do what I do - use a virtual SIM number. If you DO end up getting it back by using any of the methods above, you can still choose to use the virtual SIM number as a backup or something similar.

If my phone dies, will I receive text messages when I charge it?

Yes you will receive the text messages and missed calls even if your phone died. The time for when you received your message will show up as the time you charged your phone though.
