Is test cricket really boring?

It will be harsh to say but ,T20 has dulled our senses to the more subtle charms of the long format, as is evident from watching youngsters react to the game. Let's go down the memory lane where test cricket was unplugged.Watching gripping Test cricket was great fun back then. What is that one thing that T20 lack but test has? Yes the Sun , there was something slant of the late-afternoon light enhances the aesthetics of watching cricket and accentuates a sense of background pause. Cover drives seem to unfurl a second slower, outswing hangs in air a little more. The pause allows for a bit of reflection, conferring on every piece of cricketing action a singular value. Every ball, and it's associated field move, seems suspended on its own thread, persistent in memory, while adding to overall narrative of the game. Those long bowling spells tested our patience and optimism. They made us wait patiently through a seemingly luckless spell of bowling till wicket falls at its fag end. We always witnessed wicketless awesome spells and appreciated them irrespective of immediate results. Similarly runlessSpells have been endured, knowing that a counter attack might be lurking in the corners. The key though, is that all this has to be experienced, and in a sense, most viewing of sport is a throwback to childhood, a revisiting of the ebb and flow of familiar emotions. This is where I wonder what will happen to the current generation of cricket viewers, who have seen T20 before they have had the chance to watch a test match full. English Premier League La Liga and Formula One , are generally considered for the shift in the viewership patter of these slow sport, but there is more to it I feel. T20 has fit nicely into the night time outdoor entertainment slot and the enormous amount marketing to go with it has succeeded in coaxing kids into believing that anything slower is booring. There is ever increasing rift and generational divide in the game's viewership. We are already beginning to wonder , to paraphrase this saying , ' what do they know of cricket who only T20 know?' Something can still be done to stop things from coming to a permanent pass, when this thought might ring even truer than it does now.

Why are test matches boring?

I used to think the same before I actually watched and enjoyed test matches. I would like to correct myself, it is not match but ‘War’ which lasts 5 days. There are some reasons why I am saying that test format is the best formatUnlike t20 or odi, you have to play with patient whether you are batsman or a bowler. In test matches, pitches are more condusive to bowling, so batsman needs to be technically correct as well as temparamently strong to face quality spells of some world class bowlers like James Anderson, Dale Steyn or R Ashwin. As a bowler, It’s more difficult because batsman is ready to play whole day without worrying runrate so bowler really need to be skillful to get batsman out.It is the battle of skills and temparament. When you are bowling against the likes of Dravid, If you will bowl outside off-stump, he is happy to leave the ball whole life and you will feel like labour. This is the format which draws real results. A better team always wins. Luck has the least role to play in test cricket.Teams are dominant force at their home. Even Australia struggles to beat Pakistan in UAE. And It is a real joy to beat any team on their own backyard. This kind of defeats at home ends carriers of several players!!!!It is real joy to watch sub-battles in test like Ashwin vs. ABdevilliers, Anderson Vs. Kohli and many more.I watched whole India-Australia series and I found it very interesting and thriller.“Test cricket is something which separates boys from men.”

Why is cricket such a boring sport?

There are a whole lot of reasons for that.Firstly its long. Even the shortest format of the game lasts for as long as three hours. And the longest one lasts five days. Yeah that's right, five DAYS! Thanks to this, it's nearly impossible to watch a complete game of cricket. Most people just look at the scores on the internet. No matter what the format is, only the last 5–10 overs of each innings are interesting to watch. The rest of the overs seem largely inconsequential to watch. The game is heavily biased towards batting. Suppose a team bowls really well, and the batting team is unable to score runs, then the game becomes really boring and unhappening. Cricket is fun to watch only if there is some serious hitting going on.Only a handful of countries play the game. Except for the World Cup and Champions Trophy, the result of most ODI series seems very inconsequential indeed. There is not much interest because nothing really happens a team loses or wins. ( To give some context here, I would like my football team to keep winning to win the league/qualify for Europe/ finish in top 4/finish in top 10/ avoid being relegated etc. No such motivation here.)I don't think cricket is a boring game to play. But yeah watching cricket (in general) can be a bit boring.

1st Ashes test - Did this match show that the test match format is still well and truly alive and well?

Thanks Jinxie, it's never been anything but healthy in my eyes. Sure some love T20 - not really my scene, but each to his/her own - and some like ODIs but today's game proves the credentials of Test cricket. At lunch on the fifth day the result was still in doubt after swinging one way and the other several times during the course of the match, you can't ask for more than that from professional sportsmen.

As a cricket fan, are you not bored watching Virat's innings?

Not at all .Even I'll watch test match innings of Virat if it's possible for me & time permits. The way Virat plays is perfect & he never disappoints with dots & unnecessary shots. He is the best Batsmen , all the cricket lovers loves to watch his innings. Especially while chasing. His confidence level while batting is extreme.

Are we not bored by the Indian cricket team playing only in subcontinents and not being tested in away matches at England and Australia for the past 2 years? Was this schedule just to give India some brownie points?

Yes we are. Atleast I am.But the BCCI finds it easier and much more efficient to organise a string of home matches followed by a string of away games.Although the home stretch over the past 2 years was a bit boring, there were more than a few enjoyable matches. The entirety of the India-Aus Test series showed what true test cricket is. It had many instances of individual and team brilliance from both sides.Remember Australia surprising India in Pune in the 1st Test due to the brilliance of Smith and O'Keefe. And then the way India bounced back particularly Pujara's masterclass in Bangalore. The New Zealand ODI series as well was enjoyable. It was short and exciting, particularly the decided which went to the last over.India also found a settled Test squad over the 2 years. It found new rising stars of Indian cricket like Hardik Pandya, Shreyas Iyer. It strengthened it's ODI bowling lineup into one of the best in the world with the help of Bumrah , Kuldeep , Chahal, etc.All of the above will turn out to be essential as over the next 2 years India will spend most of its time overseas. This includes tours of South Africa, Australia, England and of course the Cricket World Cup , 2019 in England.

Are the Australian players boring in the first test match against India?

I guess your question basically refers to Australian batsman not bowlers because it was Australia's bowling at day 1 which added all spice into the test match i guess. As far as Australian batting is concerned and if I remember that well in ashes series last year run rate used to be 2.5 to 3 only so that has gone somewhat more down now and as pant sledges Australian batting by saying that ‘not everyone is pujara here’ that's the outcome. It's not only about Smith and Warner but they were searching for a second opener previous year as well and Shaun marsh and Peter handscomb have been in and out as always.Maybe they can try Darcy short at maximum in place of finch. It isn't boring cricket, it is what is called as test cricket but Australia have used it least in recent years but they are now adopting safety first…
