Why Is It Illegal To Grow Vegetables In The Front Yard

Is it really illegal to grow your own vegetables?

No. It is one of those stories in the news that have become distorted by omitting details and becoming urban legend (like it is illegal to have a yard sale or to have rain barrels). The stories in the news have been about front yard vegetable gardens. In some municipalities the gardens may violate local ordinances or in communities with HOAs the front-yard gardens might violate HOA covenants. The distinction usually comes down to gardens that are aesthetic, like flower gardens, versus gardens for the growing of consumable food. If it is in the backyard and/or out-of-site, not an issue. If you are clever and want to jab the local government in the eye, put your consumables in a butterfly garden. Butterfly gardens fall into three types - ones that provide nectar (flowers), ones that provide host plants, and ones that are a combo of the first two. We have a combo one out front. You could plant sweet potatoes in there and no one would notice the difference between regular sweet potato leaves and the brighter green ornamental sweet potatoes - it’s just a vine. Parsley, cilantro, dill, carrots and parsnip (the tops) and fennel are host plants for butterflies. Turmeric, ginger and sunchokes have beautiful flowers and the local code bozos would have no clue what is growing under the ground. Purple basil looks ornamental as do many herbs. Onions, shallots and garlic leaves are undistinguishable from other species of ornamental allium. The key is not making it look like a vegetable garden, so no square boxes. Plant the herbs and veggies in clumps making them look ornamental and separate them with regular garden flowers. Or put trailing herbs like oregano in ornamental pots as accents in the garden. With a little creativity, you can have the last laugh, some cut flowers for the dinner table as well as some fresh herbs and veggies!

Is it legal to hang a deer from a tree in your front yard?

My wonderful neighbor decided to hang his dead deer from a noose by its neck in his front yard, on a tree. Its stomach is cut open and it's just downright disturbing. Not only does it bother me as a vegetarian to see a dead animal right near my house, it's right next to the bus stop where small children get on the bus. I live in New York, by the way. I think this is downright disgusting and should be taken down immediately. Is this legal? Can i call the police? What do I do, I'm about to throw up.

Why is it illegal to cut down a cactus in Arizona?

If you dump a cactus in Arizona it's a felony. It's considered abandonment. You have to go through a legal cactus adoption agency to place the cactus in a new home. Shooting or cutting a cactus is cactus cruelty, also a felony. Why are you trying to get rid of a cactus? It's a big responsibility. You should have thought about that before you got a cactus in the first place. It really annoys me when people like you want to kill a cactus. All you have to do was abstain from purchasing a cactus in the first place! You don't deserve a cactus. Give the cactus up for adoption. And I hope you never get a cactus again.
