Why is the video playback quality in Linux so poor and the VSync tearing still unsolved in Linux Mint and other popular Linux distros?
Do you have a specific setup or are you discussing concerns floating around in the commentator sphere (ie “stuff I read on the internet”) ? You are not going to get serious answers unless you have a specific test case. The very generic answer to this question is a lot of legalese about proprietary video acceleration embedded in modern mother boards, plus Windows making certain proprietary video formats popular. Because Linux is open source and for various reasons reverse engineering is illegal…getting those problems solved is a slow process.There are unofficial workarounds for these problems that a little research can solve, but it requires more specific information from the user for what specific issues are. Some things work beautifully. Some things do not without some specific software packages. To say that all video playback is lousy quality is overly generic and disingenuous. I've used VLC player for years and had zero problems with quality of playback…even before installing the codecs.No I am not watching your video.

Why is the audio quality in Linux significantly worse than in Windows?
The only issue that I personally have experienced was “crackling/popping”, and this was due to a buggy piece of software that I was piping my audio through, namely: Pulseaudio-EQ, and ONLY on Ubuntu 14.04 running on a specific HP machine.I use the standard Advanced Linux Sound Architecture(ALSA) and Pulse-Audio Sound Server, which is relatively simple, but it’s capable of very complex use cases. Pulse-Audio got a lot of hate in the earlier versions, because it had a lot of issues, but now it’s the standard because it simplifies Linux audio, while allowing lots of plug-ins and extensions.I’m actually pretty obsessive about audio, I’ve been a musician longer than I’ve been a Linux user. One of the things that made me start using Linux was Pulseaudio, the EQ lets you achieve excellent sound quality, and Pulseeffects(A Compressor, Limiter, Reverb+EQ, and Condensor all-in-one program).And I thought I had control before, on Windows with HP’s Beats Audio software( which was just a re-branded Realtec HD Audio Codec. Doesn’t even compare to Linux audio capabilities. There are actually lots of music production machines out there running Linux, and multiple distribution flavors that are custom made to work with audio.
