Why Is My 97 Volvo 850 Running Low On Coolant But Not Over Heating

What does it mean when my coolant light comes on for just a few minutes, and then goes away once I start driving?

Engine coolant has a variable volume that changes with temperature. When cold, it takes up less space and could therefore be below the coolant level sensor (if equipped). Upon reaching a higher temperature as the engine warms up, the coolant expands and makes up the volume to flood the sensor. The test (and remedy) is to check the coolant level and fill to the minimum line on the reservoir. If the light no longer comes on when starting, monitor the level to determine if coolant is leaking or being consumed through a failed head gasket. This is often evident by white smoke from the tailpipe and an antifreeze odor in the exhaust.

Is 130,000 miles a lot for a Volvo?

Usually for a volvo, this is about half the engine and transmission life. My parents still have a 1987 Volvo DL240 with about 287,000 miles with regular upkeep and maintenance. Make sure you get the car checked by a mechanic for leaks, rust, dents, body structure, and electrical issues the car may have, a/c and heat, and to make sure all of the gauges are working and that may sound silly but I have seen a lot of volvo's around that year with a bad fuel gauge and thats the last gauge you want to go out because then you have to get really good at guessing how much gas you have left based on your odometer and trip meter.

1997 Volvo 850 radiator fan no working signal not receive from ECU any body help me?

ok here is how the system actually works:
1 coolant temp sensor [located below thermostat housing at top front of engine.
this is a single sensor system, this sensors information is shared with engine fuel management transmission computer and instrument cluster.
2 the engine management computer has total control over the cooling fan.
noting that this achieved by means of a fan relay located low, on the right side of the radiator core support.this relay is hard wired to the fan itself and the fan and relay are replaced as a unit.
when an 850 comes in with customer complaint[s] of running weird, cooling fan stays on or fan never comes on and or temp gauge fluctuates i check for codes [early models] or check the live data coolant temp of later models [obd 2] always i find the temp sensor is out of range .
replacement is easy AFTER engine cools down remove the thermostat housing, thermostat and seal. disconnect the sensor wire and remove/replace the sensor.
reassembly should also consist of renewing the thermostat and seal at the same time.
[never let the 850 engine overheat and always keep the timing belt and belt drive system fresh.]
over the years i have only had to replace 2 cooling fan/relays one due to crash damage and one on a very high mileage car that just quit [vehicle in question had 320k miles on it]

1997 Volvo 960/ S-90 running rough like it's going to stall?

Starting with the drying out plastic. This is understandable given the age of the car, and depending on where you live the plastic will become brittle faster.

If the car has a rough idle start with this diagnostic. sit in the car with it idling. turn on the air conditioner. If the RPM's stay the same after the ac is on then your idle control valve needs to be replaced. This is a very simple replacement that you can do yourself. If it is cold when it runs crappy at idle this is another signal that the idle control valve needs to be replaced and is frozen shut, which even happens on cold mornings here in california

Having a leaking coolant tank is also a very bad thing. The engine cannot build up the pressure it needs and thus will cause overheating in parts of the engine. Not a good thing. I would also check to see if the oxygen sensor or rmp sensor is bad. When these two item are about to fail, they will give you sudden "tempermental" sessions where the car sputters and acts like it will stall.

I would check www.brickboard.com

That will give you more technical accounts on the problems you are having.

In the end result i would say: replace the oxygen sensor, rpm sensor, and the coolant leaks. This is about 120 dollars in parts.

E-mail me if you would like, with more indepth symptoms on how your car is acting and i would be glad to help you.

Why won't my car start after fixing a broken serpentine belt?

Ok so first question is the starter rotating the motor like it should and it just wont start or are you turning the key without getting any results. If its not turning over id first off hit the starter solenoid with a soft hammer a few good raps may dislodge a stuck solenoid. Now if the motor is spinning but not firing up my first place id look is the distributor wiring unless it runs coil packs then i would guess that you knocked the wires off the crank sensor or maybe even broke the crank sensor. I am at a disability here not knowing what the vehicle make is., if it died while driving because belt fell off and you ran on battery till it ran out of power. ( a jump start is the ticket in that case ) Honestly im going with the crank sensor or crankshaft position sensor.being the root of your problem because if the belt broke it could easily take out the sensor as belt flew around the front of the motor. But check all your connections and research the crank sensor ..its usually a cheap and easy part to replace if its in a area where belt passes by it that makes sense as to your problem. Ok let me know a bit more info if possible. Dont give up the answer will come

Oil coming out from Engine Oil filler Cap and some white smoke?

Oil is spitting out from Oil filler Cap i thought the Cap is the problem so i bought a new one and still spitting out.. I open the cap and saw some white smokes i don't know if this normal.. the smoke is not like a super smoke when the car overheats its like a blowing smoke from cigarette. i wanna know if the oil and smoke is Bad? the car is 140,000 mile they just fixed it because it has miss fire of 1 and 3 the car drives normal when this happened but Im just scared... the car has new radiator a week ago because the old one leaks the water level is normal and the temperature... before i drive this car and get fixed its stocked for 4months and when it get fixed the mechanic said I should drive this everyday to break in i drive it for only like 1-3miles for 3 days now but i still saw an oil and smoke coming out from oil filler cap so in my mind i was like is this still broken or about to the mechanic also said i also need to check the oil and water from radiator every week? im just scared i wanna know if this is normal coz i dont know if my mechanic noticed this before he give me my car? I cant contact my mechanic because his in vacation right now. the car is BMQ z3 roadster 1997 . tell me whats wrong and if I should still drive it? i dnt have money yet to put it in shop to check it so i wanna know from here in your own experience.. thank you. other Details is when he fix the miss fire in 1 and 3 cylinder he said its because my car overheats before. but when we put the machine into machine shop they didn't find any problem in Gasket only on top of the engine which is the cylinder.

Does a blown head gasket cause the engine of a car to make a knocking sound when you step on the gas?

Every modern car has the head gasket but they vary in their thickness and construction based on the manufacturer’s design of the engine. The head gasket seals the combustion chamber allowing your car to build the proper compression and contain exhaust gases. The head gasket also keeps coolant and oil out of the combustion chamber which is very important. How to know if the head gasket is blown ?If the head gasket is blown, it can cause an engine to knock but will usually be a mechanical knock and depends on how the gasket blew. If the engine has been stood for a while both valves will be closed and any pressure in the cylinder would be dissipated. A reliable way to determine whether a head gasket is blown is to test for carbon dioxide. In this test, the coolant is examined for traces of combustion gases. The test is performed with a tool that utilizes a solution that changes color upon contact with carbon monoxide. What are the symptoms of blown head gasket ?One of the major blown head gasket symptoms is a consistently high temperature of the car engine. It can be checked from the temperature gauge of the car dashboard. Chronic engine may be both a cause and symptom of a leaking head gasket. Apart from this, other symptoms of blown head gasket are:· Significant drop in coolant level· Mixing of Coolant and Engine oil· White smoke from Exhaust Pipe· Popping of coolant overflow tank capThese are some of the symptoms of blown head gasket. My car engine oil looks white & Milky!?

I have noticed for a few weeks now that my engine oil stick has oil that looks very white and milky! And because the car has no indication of overheating as well as any other sort of problem, I doubt I have a blown gasket, so I decided to just have the oil changed. I bought the car from someone that said he took good care of it, and I didn't see no oil leak or anything when I went checked it out. But I just somehow forgot to check the oil stick?!!

Anyway, the oil looks fine when I jack the car up and let go the old oil, it isn't like super dirty or anything. And after putting in new oil and drove it for awhile, the oil stick still has milky/ gooey oil gum all over. What could this be? Is it because the winter? This has never happened before in my other cars.

This one is a 95 VOLVO 850!

How do I fix my car having a rough idle after replacing the alternator?

You're right to assume that something else going on. Because it is!Personally I'd check to see if the alternator is providing the right amount of voltage. it's not impossible to get the wrong part installed. and when I say that, I don't necessarily mean you chose the wrong part, but during the assembly line a part they grabbed while assembling the alternator could have been or of spec or something. Check the grounds. A lot of the time, over years of use a little sand blasting or sand papering of the hookups does help. while running the engine, disconnect the battery. A poorly performing battery can drag the entire system down. check to make sure your AC ain't causin' problems too. make sure the clutch is spinning or not spinning when not being used. double check the water pump to see if it was messed up. lastly check all your ignition wiring too. depending on the model year and brand, it might be chatty with obd2. if it's carbureted, obviously you won't get any feedback. if it is obd2, there might be information in there that can give you an idea of what's going on. so get a reader and check. also with modern fi engines, they'll run rough after a battery removal for a while. make sure your fuel economy hasn't been affected, if it has, it's a clear indication that something is wrong.

Smoke coming from engine compartment, car wont start now?

Last night my bf had his car running for about 20 minutes while he took a short cat nap in it. He woke up to smoke all inside the car and outside. He Immediately turned the car off and got out. Waited a few minutes and then tried starting the car but it wouldnt crank over. Eventually it did and the same smoke problem started again. Now the car will not start at all.
Any ideas on what this could be would be great!
He recently had the power steering completely fixed because it went out.
