Betta fish problem - swim bladder disorder, or something else? (Pictures)?

I've had my betta, Betty, for almost two years. I've been having some swim bladder issues with her for about 6 months or so. Occasionally I feed her a pea (as directed in many different sources). Her behavior is normal, except for the fact that she doesn't swim around as frequently.

My main concern is that she has physical deformities that appear to be getting worse over time. I first noticed what looked like a cyst on the left side of her stomach last October (so it's been around 6 months). It has not grown in size. However, lately she has had severe swelling between her midsection and tail, and it looks almost transparent like a bubble. It has been getting worse.

From what I've read, this looks like it could be swim bladder disorder still, but it is not improving. I don't see how it could be dropsy because this has been going on for months. Any suggestions? Please don't waste my time by saying "Your fish is dying!" without some scientific support to your answer.

Does touching a slug or a snail with your bare hands expose you to any dangerous bacteria, viruses, or parasites?

In general, no (I have been doing so for more than 50 years: still here, with no snail related ailment). Normal common sense and Hygiene indicates that you should wash your hands before eating anything or needing to put your hand on/in your mouth. In fact, snail slime or extracts thereof are marketed as an anti-wrinkle cream.I regularly show kids slugs by letting them crawl on my hands so that they can see the colour of the slime and other features.Similarly, they are safe to eat if thoroughly cooked. The snag is that in some tropical/subtropical areas they are a secondary host for the rat lungworm. If a human picks up this parasite, it migrates to the brain/meninges and then dies. This causes a form of meningitis, and, as far as I know, the severity depends on the number of parasites ingested. It can be fatal, but this is rare.In virtually all cases, humans get the disease by eating raw or undercooked snails, or salad contaminated by an infected snail, and not by simple contact. Some idiots have eaten raw slugs or snails as a dare. Don’t do this. I would have no qualms about handling a snail in these areas, but I would be bit hygiene-conscious afterward. Washing the salad plants should do the trick, a good idea anyway.

How long will it take for an algae eater to show results in fish tank?

I am speaking from experience and suggestions from pet stores. I did not do a lot of research or reading. You might also spend some time reading to get more specific detail. The picture you have seems to be of a common pleco, a Hypostomus Plecostomus or a closely related genera. They are good at consuming algae. They are bottom feeders too, as in they eat left overs in the tank. Now, a Pleco rarely gets rid of all the algae in the tank, it most definitely will keep it in control. This is because getting rid of algae is very hard. I will mention a few reasons.Plecos poops a lot, this feeds the algae and increases load on filter system.Dying algae feeds the surviving algae. Most algae eaters like only a few kinds of algae not all. This combined with other available food sources will determine how much they consume algae. Most of algae is not much affected by chemical treatments they sell in pet stores. Not atleast at concentrations they publish. This list is not exhaustive.Following are my suggestions of what can make it better.Increase the size of tank.Get a filtration system that's rated for twice your tank size.Don't over feed. If you have a good idea of how much your fish/ turtle or other creature needs, try to underfeed just a bit for short while.Keep changing water, filter components and scrub off the algae surfaces regularly. If algae is too intense to begin with, have a pleco, a small one. Once there is visible change and you notice it does not go down anymore, move it to a secondary tank and feed it well. You can pick tiny algae cubes from pets stores. If a second tank is too much work, give it to a friend or leave it in a survivable habitat, just make sure it does not affect native life. These fish live for years and are tough.Decrease the amount/duration of light. Avoid direct sunlight.Have a suction setup where you can comfortably and regularly pull out poop from the bottom of your tank.Keep using chemical treatments in appropriate concentrations regularly. Do this for a while even after all algae is gone and every time you have changed water. This list is not exhaustive either.I have learnt to embrace presence of little bit of algae in the tank. My two Plecos are now integral part of my 80 gallon tank with three Terrapins. The Plecos sometimes get rides on the Terrapins back.Hope this helps. Good luck.
