Why Is Nestle Considered Evil

Why do people boycott Nestle?

Nestlé have several corporate practices that rank low on an ethical scale. In brief, here are some of the practices that I personally (and many others) have issues with. The first one was a key reason for boycotts a few decades ago. Amazingly these practices have not stopped (they have just moved to other lands - more in the link at the end).Heavily promoting infant formula in developing countries despite it being known to be much less safe than breastfeeding.Being a global leader in bottled water, attempting to greenwash the public on the issue, and tapping water supplies to the detriment of local ecosystems and communities.Having a poor record on supply chain for commodities such as cocoa, where child labor and slavery are prevalent.Poor track record on sustainability of ingredient sourcing, from palm oil to coffee. There are many other factors to consider. I attempted to look at them in a balanced fashion in order to write a review of a Nestlé Kit Kat. My score from an ethical perspective was 2/5 Green Stars. I think I was being generous at that. Why is Nestle considered a bad company?

This is more of a matter of personal opinion and there’s loads of information about this only. For example, there’s an article explaining the reasons it’s hated, lists of shocking scandals, and there’s even a Reddit thread of people going into detail about Nestle. That should be enough information for you to make an informed decision on :)

Why hasn't Nestle been stopped yet? Doesn't the world see what they are doing?

Ya I think you don’t really have a full grasp of Nestle as a corporate entity. First of when you say nestle you have to be specific as to with country or region you are referring to, it’s not a monolithic entity. The truth is nestle in country x maybe vastly different from nestle in country y.

Are there any interesting facts about the Nestlé company?

I have interned at Nestle Waters. One of the things that amazed me was how many brands they owned. From Poland Spring, Häagen-Dazs, Maggi to Purina, pretty much everyone (or every pet) on earth has at least eaten something Nestle. This may or may not be interesting to you, so let me tell you a story instead - the invention of the chocolate chip cookies. When Ruth Graves Wakefield (owner of the Toll House Inn near Brockton, MA) invented the cookie by mistakenly replacing bakers' chocolate with Nestle's semi-sweet chocolate chips, Nestle seized the opportunity and marketed the recipe on its chocolate packaging (and later premade Toll House Cookies). Soon the recipe became popular and the cookie became a staple in American desserts.

Why do liberals hate the Nestlé water business? Is it something that Nestlé does in particular or is it the entire industry?

I dislike Nestle on several counts. Max Sklar points out their despicable marketing of formula milk in Africa. When working in Africa in the 1980s, one of my employees came to beg me for a pay rise, because he did not have enough money for baby-milk and it was so bad that his child had to suck the breast.  Bottled water is wrong on many, many levels. In most developed countries, tap water is safe to drink.  If it's not that good, or tastes strange, filter it.  Shipping it about in plastic bottles on diesel trucks is nuts when there's perfectly good pipes in the ground.  The idea that bottled water is healthier has been shown to be false many many times. If anything, it is more likely to be harmful because of the plasticisers in the bottles. I can taste the difference between the same brand of water from a plastic bottle and a glass bottle, which I presume is some taint from the plastic. And KitKats should be made by Rowntrees.

How will the recent Maggi ban affect the Nestle company?

Maggi will be used as raw material for cement....:(Maggi heads to cement plants27420 tons of Maggi will be destroyed

Legal, but not socially responsible?

For an assignment, we have to find a corporate action that was legal, but not socially responsible.

All I can find are actions that are illegal and socially irresponsible. I'm just asking for ideas as a starting point. Thanks!
