Why Is Nuclear Family Called Nuclear Family

What is a "nuclear" family?

It's basically your immediate family. Parents and children. It's the basic, foundational unit that society is based on.

Why is nuclear family called nuclear family?

In research or in a psychologist's writings, teaching, and therapy, a nuclear family is the basic family usually headed by a male and married to a woman called the wife, and possibly with two children or more. It is called a nuclear family because the nucleus is the living center of one single cell. Good luck.

Movies with nuclear family?

What are some movies that portray the traditional nuclear family (mom, dad, son & daughter) in which the dad dies and the mom is left with the responsibility of raising the kids? The movies need to be somewhat current (like 2006-now). It would be best if they are popular films and aren't animated.

Nuclear family question?

Nuclear comes from the word "nucleus" which means core.
it was made to separate the term of nuclear family from "extended family"

I guess that it`s called like that because every extended family starts from the core..

What are some of the strengths of a nuclear family?

The only strength I can identify is individuality. Weaknesses are lack of: commitment, duty to family, extended family, interaction with family. The "all for one, one for all" attitude is gone.

When and why did the traditional nuclear family arise?

The nuclear family was a phrase coined in the 1960's as a result of families becoming in one sense smaller.By smaller, I mean that it was less and less common for the newlyweds to move in with the bride or groom's parents.  It had been a common thing for families large and small to live on the same land, often in the same dwelling for decades or even longer. Think Hatfields and McCoys only all over the US.Somewhere in the 60's that started to change.  It was a coincidental thing with the advent of Nuclear energy, hence the nickname "nuclear family", although that also is an apt description of the new family unit, which means parents and immediate children only.  Families began to branch out, children were not as likely to follow in the parents footsteps.  Fewer and fewer lived near the originating family.I can remember advertisements talking about the new nuclear family, mostly ads for TV dinners, (as a Mad Men style scene plays in my head). As for why? Opportunity changed America combined with the technological advancements made in the 20th century, people could go farther faster.  Living in California, you could call New York anytime, easily from your own home. Distance wasn't as big an issue as in the 19th century. Information was more widespread, the world changed and we changed with it.
