Why Is There No Channel 1

Why isn't there a Channel 1 on TV?

originally back in the begginning of television (late 40's) there was a channel 1. the standards hadn't solidfied yet and along the way, the government (FCC) decided that they would reserve channel 1 for themselves. so the manufacturers changed the VHF channel numbers to #2 up to #13. been that way ever since. there actually is radio spectrum space allocated for channel 1 but it is only allowed use by the government.

none of that applies to cable, just over the air transmission :-)

just thought i would add that the very first TV's only had 6 channels. within a couple years (if i remember right) the other 6 were added to make 12 --- this is why there is a huge gap in frequencies between channels 6 & 7 -- in that range you will find the entire FM radio band and the frequencies used by civilian aviation. might as well add that is the reason why VHF TV antennas are used for FM and some hacks used them for listening to local pilot/tower chatter :-)

Why isn't there a channel 1?

From 1945 to 1948 TV stations in the U.S. shared Channel 1 with fixed and mobile services. In 1948 the FCC decided television needed it's own dedicated unshared bandwidth base on there new knowledge of signal propagation and interference. They gave that channel spot to fixed mobile services. It was easier for them to drop channel one than having to re-number the TV channel table. Foreign countries didn't start TV broadcast until 1950's. They never use channel one.

Read the whole question TV tech-man? "only if you have that comcast cable search thing..." Cable TV channel 1 is not the same as Broadcast channel 1 over the air. Cable didn't exist back then. Any frequency allocation can be called channel 1 for that matter. I can create a channel zero if I want. Doesn't mean everyone will know about or have access to my channel.

Why is there no channel 1?

When the FCC first started granting broadcast spectrum to television, there was a channel 1. When FM radio came along, that portion of the spectrum was designated for radio. This was done more for political reasons than anything else, because the chairman of the FCC thought radio deserved the spectrum more than TV did. (Lots of people had radios because they were affordable. Not many had TVs because they were very expensive.) Later on, the FM broadcasts were moved because of interference between TV and FM radio stations.

What WiFi channel should I set my router to use?

The point of setting wifi channels is to be different than your neighbors. If everyone set their wifi channel to say 11, then everyone would be jamming each other’s routers. Thus there is no one-size-fits-all answer here.Download a wifi analyzer app on your phone.Scan the 2.4 ghz band and look at channels 1, 6, and 11 (these are the non-overlapping channels). The graph view is by far the best view for this (on most apps just swipe left or right). Find the channel (between 1, 6, and 11) that has the lowest dBm level (remember - 60 is “higher” than -80). It is not about how many routers are using that channel, only about what the power level is. if one has all -80 dBm or lower then you are good, -70 will have some slight interference, and -60 or higher will cause very noticeable problems. If you live in an apartment building then try to find an unused channel for the 5ghz band. If you live in a standard house, then dont worry about it because your neighbors 5ghz band will be too weak anyways.

Why is channel 1 missing from basic television?

There used to be a Channel 1; (Actually, up to 1940, there used to be 19 Channels, not 13); however, FCC later on realized that it had better uses for it for land-based mobile communications, so it removed it in 1948.A  history of Channel allocation can be found inWHAT EVER HAPPENED TO CHANNEL 1
