Every state has different sizes they will allow w/o special permits. For example, Ohio does not have a length restriction on the tractor and trailer so long as the trailer length does not exceed 53'. Texas also has no restrictions on the length of the tractor trailer combo and allow trailers up to 59".Nevada restricts tractor and trailer to be shorter than 70' before special permits would be required. Tractor trailer height restrictions also differ from state to state. Federal bridge laws are sometimes more restrictive and are a little too complicated to explain here. So normal sizes are close to: Height 13' to 13'6" Width 102" Trailer length either 48' or 53" (most are now 53') Tractors are measured using wheel base. Wheel base is center of the front axle to the center of the rear axle. A short, single axle, day cab (truck w/no sleeper) wheel base would be about 150 to 156" A larger truck, twin screw (two rear axles) with a sleeper would be in the 230" range. (your "normal") A twin screw day cab would be in the 170 180" range.

What happens if you are caught driving a truck without a CDL license?
You might not need a CDL for that truck. You need to look on the driver door jamb or on the door itself for the manufacturer sticker. It will have the VIN, and a bunch of weights and such. If the first one (GVWR) is 26001 or more, then you need the CDL. Doesn't matter if it has air brakes or not. If it is under, then you can drive it with a regular license - unless you are hauling haz-mat. If you need a CDL, and are caught without one, you face stiff fines, and your license will get suspended. The company that lets you drive the vehicle also faces the same fines. The truck will not be allowed to continue without a licensed driver, and will probably get impounded by the police officer that stops you. Again, the company that lets you drive doesn't want to risk losing their truck and load, so if you are working for a reputable company, I am sure you are legal. If you are working for a shady company, I would tip off a local officer, and let them "stop" you. This type of company should not be in business.

In the middle of ten acres I own I was constructing a house when the state stopped by and asked to see my building permit . I said I have none and get off my land . He said stop working and I said leave . He got on a radio and in minutes the police where there and ordered me to stop or I would be arrested . On my own land working for my own benefit it seems the state takes a major interest and can control what I do . I said since I must stop working on the house I will clean my shot gun leaning next to me and the police said do not move or we will shoot . SO I can not work on my house or clean my gun . What is it I can do in police state america anymore . If i do not do it in secret or private some states have sodomy laws that prevent me from having sex in the manner I might want . You might be happy in this cage called America and enjoy meddling in others affairs but freedom ended the day property taxes where enacted and its only gotten worse .
How long (on average) does it take to get a CDL license?
After our honeymoon, we're paying to put my fiance thru schooling to get his CDL license so he can drive trucks like his dad. His dads going to be getting him a job at his business too, once he graduates. I was just curious.. on average, about how long does it take to get a CDL license when you go thru a community college? ps. I'm still a bit sleepy, so just in case its not called "CDL" its the license you need in order to drive semi-trucks, large dump trucks ect.
