Why My Pulse Goes Down To 40 While Doing Stationary Cycling Exercise

Question about how Schwinn exercise bikes calculate distance and speed.?

I got a Schwinn recumbent bike about 4 years ago. At the time I was avidly riding my street bike. I know that I was averaging 12 mph on my street bike. When I began using the Schwinn the readout was telling me I was riding at 18 mph average. In addition, I was using the Runkeeper web app to track my activities and it would estimate that I was burning about 40 calories per mile while the Schwinn said 40 calories after 1.5 miles.

Jump forward 3 years and I now have the recumbent AND an upright Schwinn. The upright does the same thing. With the same amount of exertion on my part the upright is showing me riding 18 mph. But when I jump on my street bike I'm back to averaging 12 mph.

Does anyone know why this is? Is it standard for exercise bikes? (I've only owned or used the two) Is it, perhaps because with an exercise bike you're putting out constant, direct effort without the possibility of coasting? And even better does anyone have a link to a site that might explain this phenomenon?

Is Cycling 8 miles a day on Stationary Bike good exercise for someone eating healthy and trying to lose weight?

8 miles on the bike isnt very much unless you have it on a high resistance level most of the time. If I were you I would focus more on the amount of time you were doing it while trying to keep your heart rate within a certain range. For me I would do 45 minutes and not let my heart rate fall below 135 or so. It's a little easier to keep track of if you have a heart rate monitor, but if you don't you can just check your pulse ever 5-10 minutes for 6 seconds and add a zero at the end of whatever number of beats you counted.
Though depending on what your goal is, you will want to change your target heart rate. For me, I'm 21, 5'3 and 135lbs, and if I wanted to focus just on fat burning I would keep my heart rate between 130 and 150....if I wanted to focus more on endurance and High Intensity Training I try to stay above 150.

Does riding a stationary bike for thirty minutes burn fat?

I'm really trying to get toned and lose a little flub that I have. If I go to the gym and ride the stationary bike for thirty minutes at least three times a week, will I lose weight?

How many calories per hour am I burning on my stationary bike?

I am riding my new stationary bike every night for an hour. My speed is about 23 MPH on average. I weigh roughly 135, I am 5'6 and I am looking to lose a little weight that I put on over the past few years. Every calculator shows that I am burning over 1000 calories per hour. That seems high to me but at that pace maybe it's accurate. Does anybody have any facts they can give to me based on my information provided? I am always drenched in sweat at the end of every workout. I appreciate your responses.

Is 21 miles per day on stationary bike too much or is it OK?

I've been steadily increasing my mileage and my time on my stationary bike. I want to lose about 20 pounds. Today, I clocked in at 20.8 miles in 78 minutes. I'm wondering if I should continue adding time and mileage. Is there a limit? I feel fine. Is this normal to ride this many miles on stationary bike, or should I reduce and do other exercises as well. In addition, I've been walking 3.75 miles. Should I continue to increase my mileage on my bike? Is this OK?

Does riding between 40-50kmph on an excercise bike for 45 minutes count as vigorous?

Speed is always 0 on an exercise bike, unless it happens to be on a moving vehicle. The display speed is just a guide to make you feel good when you think you're working hard. Most exercise bikes record power output in watts. That's what really matters. But the term vigorous implies speed rather than effort, which on a static bike would be measured using cadence. To be considered vigorous, I'd probably suggest at 90 or maybe even 100 rpm. Doing that at a low resistance setting, would be like going down a steep hill with a tailwind. It will also make you feel like legs have taken on a life of their own and absolutely bugger all for your fitness.Do this at the highest resistance setting you can manage for 45 mins. That would be vigorous exercise.
