Why am I afraid of public affection?

My boyfriend likes PDA [public displays of affection] but I hate it. He tries to hug me at school all the time and I seriously try my hardest to avoid him. I told him I don't like it, and he said he's fine with it. I let him hug me, but I don't like it one bit. I love him, but I just don't like showing affection. At school dances and sports games, I'm a little more leniant but when we're at school, I barely want to talk to him. I can't stand people going "aww" when I walk with him. I don't like people to give me and him attention, it drives me off the wall. Any help? Btw, I'm not very affectionate with my family, but I hug my friends all the time. He is my first boyfriend.
