Why Should We Believe The Government Is Going To Run Healthcare Efficiently

Who believes that the Government can run Health Care?

Given the government's history with Social Security and Medicare does anyone believe that the US government can do a better job of running our nation's health care system? I work in the Health Care industry so here is some food for thought that I know to be fact:

When the government pays for a health care service they pay bottom dollar.

The low government reimbursement causes health care providers to make it up from the private sector via increased insurance premiums which winds up being passed down to the paying consumer.

Low reimbursements reduces the number of available health care professionals because they cannot compete and go out of business

Fewer health care professionals result in longer wait times.

All of this will only get worse when government controls the whole health care system and people will no longer have incentive to spend 12 years in school and incur 100's of thousands of dollars in debt because they will not make enough money to pay off the debt. Not to mention that on average the government operates at about a 30% efficiency rate meaning for every dollar they take in 70 cents goes to government overhead. So how will they be able to do a better job

Why government run healthcare insurance is so bad?

2 Libertarian.
Just to let you know that

1. I think that you mix “less profitable” with “less efficient”. My personal experience of both systems says that government run care is more efficient when it comes to treating illnesses, especially chronic.

2. Actually, it’s opposite. I could choose doctor only from the network in the USA. It really sucked. With a government insurance I can choose ANY doctor or ANY hospital I want. No restrictions. Also doctors usually ask me what medications I would prefer, however I need to pay extra for some. It still choicer compared to the USA.

Should the government be involved in healthcare or not?

Yes.

In economics, we refer to the situation with health care as a market failure. Left to its own devices, the market fails to produce a socially efficient level of the good.

Other examples of market failures are the provision of sewers, street lights, police forces, public schools, etc. It's not an alien concept, economically speaking.

And on a personal level, I have witnessed what happens when corporations are allowed to call the shots with peoples' health. The current system is inefficient and inequitable. This bill that the Obama administration is pushing through does not go far enough.
