Why Students Should Be Students

Why can't students be friends with their teachers?

When I was a young teacher there were a few students that I became friends with, but we were very close in age back then. Now I'm married with kids and am at least 30 years older than most of my students. Even though I enjoy many of my students in class, the age difference is too great to have much in common. Occasionally a former student will come back to see me and we’ll catch up on things but that's about it. I notice the younger teachers at my school tend to have a closer relationship with their students than what I have, and I understand that because that easily could have been me at their age.Anyway, for me it's age difference. A little of it is also wanting to maintain a professional relationship with my students and not have favorites. Lastly, many of my students are now the same age as my own kids. I feel like I'm an extended parent rather than a friend.Let me add one more thing. Even though you might grow fond of your teacher and the memories you've made in high school, I think you'll find that your priorities will change once you graduate. You'll go to college, you'll make new friends, you'll get a job, and you'll see that your life will become very different. High school, once you graduate, will not be the same anymore, and I think many students who intended on keeping in touch with their teachers, will find new priorities and move on with their lives.

Should students get paid for good grades?

Personally, I disagree with students receiving pay for good grades. My main reason for this is, this sort of reward system sets the student up for failure later in life. When a child becomes motivated by external rewards (money, items, etc) then they start to always expect the same treatment when they do 'well'. In the real world, this doesn't hold true. Even though employees are paid a specific amount for the job and services they perform, if someone does something truly outstanding, that person may not receive an immediate reward (be item or verbal, but it is just expected that that specific effort and achievement be put in naturally).
The bottom line is, there are things that you have to do in life whether you like it or not, and it is intrinsic motivation that pushes a person to do their best in every area, not always the specific extrinsic reward they will receive if they 'try'.

What are three reasons why students should be allowed to wear ripped jeans?

1) Personal style. If you don't like it, MAKE UNIFORMS
2) I'm pretty sure our Bill of Rights has something about being able to wear what we want.
3) We could be wearing worse things. Ripped jeans isn't the end of the world.

Why should students not bring a cellphone to school?

When I was teaching high school during lunch time, there was a student who yelled, "he's got a gun!" It was done in a large crowd, so neither the student nor the alleged holder of the gun was identified but what happened after was more significant. Students used their cell phones to immediately call parents and, believe it or not, the media. Parents and news stations arrived at the school before first responders. The parents, news, and everyone else attempted to enter the school, which was on lockdown, and were turned away. More importantly, first responders were unable to bring vehicles and personnel into the school because of the mass of people blocking the entrances.I see parents who provide a child with a phone for "emergency purposes" as a complete smokescreen for not wanting to do some preplanning or just being lazy. It's not like a child is going to be dismissed from school just because Mom sent a text or calls the student. There are specific measures in place to effectively respond to an emergency while at school which do not include the use of a cell phone.

Students should aim to keep their student debt below what?

Generally, you want to try to keep the debt at graduation to less than you'll make in an entry level job. Of course it's difficult to predict what you'll be making, and the federal income-driven plans like IBR and Pay As You Earn make it easier  to manage, but if you're going into a field that pays $25,000 a year to start, you don't want to be facing a $50,000 loan burden to go with it.

Should students be allowed to grade their teachers?

Officially? Sure, but only if they can't do it anonymously. Anonymous student evaluations are common in college, but usually aren't taken seriously simply because anyone can write anything and not have to support it with evidence that it's true, and what do first-year college students know about college anyway? And that's the problem with kids 'grading' teachers - they aren't the ones with expectations about what they should be learning. That's the school's job to evaluate teachers. You'd just end up with meaningless crap like 'I'm giving her an F because she failed me on that essay I cheated on'.

Should students be allowed to grade their teachers?

Students should always be able to grade their teachers, as long as they wish to do so, it is anonymous, and they have justification. The grading shouldn’t be in a simple “on a scale of 1 - 10” format, because students are less likely to actually give their honest opinion. In my school district, some of us were randomly selected to do surveys on how we feel about our teachers. These were always in an “Agree, Disagree, Neutral” type multiple choice survey. The problem with these is that sometimes you need to explain to someone why you feel a certain way about a teacher. Anonymity is important due to the fact that if a teacher really is bad, they might be tempted to bring down the grades of anyone who gave them a bad grade. All students will begin to start forming opinions on their teachers as they make their way through a school year. Allowing students to grade their teachers allows them to feel like their voices are being heard. Additionally, it motivates teachers to actually do a good job, because they know that if they don’t do a good job, they could lose their job.At my school, there have been times where administrators go around to each class to inspect the teachers. The problem is that the teachers know when that is happening, so they prepare 1 good lesson, teach that lesson, and return to their normal teaching style.Since kids are the ones receiving the education, they should be able to give feedback on how their education is. As long as a teacher knows that they are being watched and graded, they will do perfectly.
