Why The Basque Country Flag Look Like The Union Flag

Why do many country flag has union Jack symbol?

Most countries that have the Union Jack in their flag are actually still British Territories. The flags of Bermuda, Anguilla, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands all fall into this category. There are a few independent countries that still display the Union Jack in their national flags. The flags of Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tuvalu. The Amercian state flag of Hawaii also includes the Union Jack. These are historic references, as all these territories were at one time British Colonies. There has been some movement to change the flags of Australia, New Zealand and Fiji (with the latter two even voting to do so), however none of the countries have decided to change at the moment. This is due to a variety of factors, from political, nostalgic and aesthetic.

How would you like the european union to become a country?

No, as history shows it would probably have to become a dictatorship to hold it together (Charlemagne, Charles V, Napoleon, Hitler), and would probably disintegrate soon after the dictator's death as in Yugoslavia. We could then very easily end up with a Europe of several hundred squabbling micronations and city states and end up being dominated by other more powerful countries (China, India, Russia, the US).

Also, you suggest "Each country becomes a state" - I believe four EU members are federal states (Austria, Belgium, Germany and Spain), the UK consists of four countries (five if Cornwall is considered a Celtic Nation), plus there are a number of autonomous regions to deal with in Italy (Friulia, Sardinia, Sicily, Trentino and the Val d'Aosta). What happens to these subdivisions - are they to be abolished (I don't see the likes of the Basque Country, Bavaria, Catalonia, Flanders, Saxony, Scotland, Wales or Wallonia surrendering their autonomy and/or identity)? Also, you have Gibraltar, the Isle of Man (OK it's not officially in the EU but I think it implements much EU policy) and the "outermost regions" - are they to become part of the country/state? Also, I don't see the likes of Aland or Brittany quietly becoming part of another state.

I would personally prefer to see a loose confederation of sovereign states (a bit like the "Common Market" we thought we'd joined in 1973) - each retaining its own sovereignty but coming together on matters of international importance, rather than a single superpower. Bigger isn't always better!

If all countries had to use a flag containing the Union Jack, what would your country’s flag look like?

Turkey:by Jestemturkbased on the silk victory handkerchief made by Brits themselves before the Battle of Gallipoli:It’s a detailed map of the Dardanelles with the words “TO constantinople” showing the ultimate objective of this military campaign. On the corners are the flag shields of the participant countries in the offensive + a Turkish flag containing the union jack on it with St. Patrick's cross stabbing the islamic symbol of the crescent, above is written “Eclipse of the Star & Crescent”.

Why are celts and basques connected?

Forget all of the nonsense that you have picked up about 'Celts'. There are serious doubts (particularly from archaeologists) that there ever any 'Celts' in Britain! No-one even suggested that there were until a few hundred years ago.

Ok. Now pick up a map of Western Europe, tip it up so that West is at the top. What you see is the European Atlantic Seaboard. Remember that water was not always a barrier - it was more often a medium of travel - trade. Now you can see that there is a strong link between Western Britain, and the Basque homeland.

If countries had to use the style of their biggest enemy country, what would the flag of your country look like?

When we talk about the best and biggest enemy of Pakistan we actually allude to its eastern neighbour which definitely India. Why not India when we have fought four major wars some disputes and countless boundary skirmishes. So here isThe Islamic Republic of India. That saffron strip represents our less than two percent Hindu minority, while that blue wheel represents the legacy of Ashoka who also ruled this part of the land. I don’t what it signifies in Indian flag.Islamic Republic of AfghanistanThough I don’t like neither I think that Afghanistan should be deemed as the enemy of Pakistan, But many Pakistanis as well as foreigners take Pak-Afghan relations in negative aspects. So here it is.I have changed the word Afghanistan (افغانستان) into Pakistan (پاکستان)،while 1298 into 1947 which our Independence year.Islamic Republic of USAThough neither American Govt nor Pakistan officially declare each other as enemy, in fact in papers they are friend, but like rest of the Muslim and third world countries we Pakistanis believe that American enmity is better than its friendship. Here it is, The flag of Crescent ,Star, and Strips. Those four stars represents four provinces of Pakistan which are Punjab, Sindh, KPK and Balochistan while the stars in the upper-right corner are Azad Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan, now why they are in the corner? because they are not provinces, anyway my answer my rules.Image: My computer, and sorry if it makes you hurt.

What will the European Union's flag look like after Brexit?

I wager it will look like a pretty cheap second hand piece of decoration across many parts of England. Indeed I think many hotels and hostels will continue to fly the flag but government buildings and institutions will probably no longer hoist the beautiful 12 stars on blue. I actually foresee a situation where regions will make a statement using the EU flag. Many non EU states with little hope of accession or even official candidacy like to fly or display the flag. I remember the short and didactic war between Russia and Georgia in 2008 saw the Georgian state display the EU flag in press conferences. This was an attempt to allign their state with the westerners. It is worth noting that the resultant states of South Ossetia & Abkhazia went unrecognised globally accept by Russia and did not display the flag. I wrote notes about that 2008 conflict for future reference seeing it as a precursor conflict of the generally perceived to be more important Ukraine war. Information Links & Sources for the (short) war in South Ossetia Information Links & Sources for the (short) war in South Ossetia (2)There too propaganda use of the EU flag was seen. As the official negotiations on Brexit began yesterday one priority was made clear by both sides, Brussels and the UK, the future status of northern Ireland and the preservation of the Good Friday Agreement and an invisible border on the island of Ireland. The GFA has in strand one quite a bit to say on vexilology or flags, when the UK Union flag can be displayed I foresee a situation in northern Ireland in the future where the EU flag will be politicised. I live in Catalonia which in the Spanish state sees vexillology (or flags) a contensious issue pretty much all the time, with pro independence town halls refusing to fly the Spanish state flag and then being ordered to. This also happens in the Basque country. My favourite silly smart ways around flying an unwanted flag in seperatist regions of Spain include displaying a flag for every country of origin of residents in the town. Or playing with the size of the flags. Very frequently the EU flag has been used in these games. So the flag of the EU will not change in design at all after Brexit (Which personally I am not convinced will happen) But its symbolism in the UK will be altered. And lots of EU flags will be recycled probably into fashion items.I hope this answer has been helpful, thoughful and insightful.

Who was the spanish civil war fought between? What two countries?

By definition, a civil war is fought primarily between two factions within a country. That is the first and last thing you need to understand. This is still true even if foreigners get involved on one or both sides.

In the specific case of the Spanish Civil War, the Germans & Italians sent weapons, advisors, and troops to the "Nationalist" faction. The opposing side, the "Republican" faction was aided by weapons and advisors from the Soviet Union, as well as several thousand foreign volunteers organised as the "XV International Brigade". Although these foreign elements were important, the majority of the troops on both sides of the war were still Spanish.
