Why Was The Tower Of London Built

Why is the Tower of London famous?

The Tower of London has a long and colourful history dating back to 1100. It has been a royal palace and refuge; a royal prison (site of some famous beheadings) and it's currently the home of the Crown Jewels.

People interested in history, ancient monuments and pageantry like to see it. The "Beefeaters" add a human touch.

There is too much to write here. I have provided a couple of links.

@ by mildred f... I enjoyed your answer but I'm afraid the bridge to which you refer is called Tower Bridge, built in 1894 to link the north to the south and allow tall ships into the Pool of London. The current London Bridge is a conventional bridge further upstream.

Why was the Mint moved from the Tower of London to Tower Hill in the early 19th century?

The Tower of London or the part of it allocated to the Royal Mint had become too small. During the Napoleonic Wars relatively few silver coins had been minted, but in 1816 a complete recoinage of the silver currency began (partly in preparation for the adoption of the Gold Standard with effect from 1821–3). The size of silver coins was reduced, and the metal became worth less than the face value: since they could be exchanged for gold coins, this did not lead to inflation.

Why does Anatoly Fomenko say the Tower of London was built no earlier than the 15th century?

I think the date of the Tower of London is really an insignificant detail compared with the general outline of history they based on discourse analysis of old texts, mention frequencies, cartographic development, dynastic history parallels ignoring the chronology commonly used. For example the New Chronology team analyse the Book of Nehemiah describing Jerusalem and fit it to the Kremlin of 16th Century, gate by gate, tower by tower and building by building.Surely, a 16th century Old Testament book describing Jerusalem being rebuilt in the 16th century Moscow is more important that the forking Tower of London for every human on the planet with the possible exception of the City of London tourist guide guild.

What was the Tower of London used for?

The first Tower was built as a garrison to quell any uprising of the Saxons after the Norman invasion in 1066. It grew and became both a royal palace and retained its status as a garrison. When the royals moved out to palaces such as Hampton Court and Greenwich the Tower became the most feared prison in England. The original gate by which goods & supplies were brought into the Tower was renamed from “The Trader’s Gate” to “The Traitor’s Gate” as movement was safer on the river and prisoners were less likely to escape. The Tower was also close to Newgate Prison where less important prisoners could be housed but still brought into the Tower for “questioning” (read torturing)Most public executions took place on nearby Tower Hill although Anne Boleyn was executed by sword on Tower Green inside the Tower. The last prisoners to be housed in the Tower were Reggie and Ronny Kray who were kept overnight before being transferred back to their unit for being Absent Without Leave (AWOL).Now it is still a garrison protected by the Yeoman Warders of the Tower who are NCOs of not less than 22 years service and not below the rank of Warrant Officer
