Why We Should Preserve Our Cultural And Traditional

Why should we preserve our traditions?

I think we should preserve traditions and even write them down to pass on to future generations. You never know when they will come in handy and I am thinking mostly of family traditions which contribute to cultural traditions.Traditions have been passed down for thousands of years and they often play a big part in keeping people alive. I’ll give you an example : I went running through a patch of woods one day on my way home when I accidentally stepped on a a five inch, rusty nail sticking out of a board hidden in the grass. It was rather thick and I couldn’t pull it out so I hobbled home. My mother managed to pull it out of my foot (OW!) and since my dad was miles away with our only means of transportation (this was back in the 50s) to get me to our doctor. So my mom treated me herself with one of her traditional backwoods methods. She had driven a pitchfork through her foot as a kid jumping off a haystack in her grandpa’s barn and her mom used this treatment which I won’t mention for modern purposes. Anyway, her home remedy worked, I didn’t get lock-jaw and the point is we should honor and preserve traditions because you might find yourself in a situation where you don’t have access to the wonderful means we currently take for granted. Traditions can often be very life supportive.

Why is preserving culture and tradition important?

Culture and tradition are not the same thing.Culture cannot be preserved, it is the sum total of our social output - every time you do something you add to it.Traditions, rituals and artefacts, outputs of culture, are worth preserving for one reason only: they make us happy.Once we have met fundamental needs like food, shelter and reproduction, humans seek psychological fulfilment. Our sense of identity, the meaning of life and simple curiosity are all aspects of that.Cultural output helps us out with those factors.BEWARE: the ‘ownership’ of cultural output always remains with those that came first: our elders. We are born with nothing. That means they have a vested interest in the ‘value’ of those factors, because the greater their perceived value, the greater their power. So sometimes ‘preserving our traditions’ is nothing to do with social output, and really has a ‘hidden’ meaning about ‘preserving our power’.So when you hear someone talk about ‘preserving our traditions’ you should ask yourself what they really mean…

How can we preserve our traditions and culture?

There are two ways. The first is obvious: teach the children. Use the oral tradition to go and sit amongst them and tell stories. Introduce stories young and let them participate in the culture. The Roman Catholic church has the saying: “Give us a child till the age of 7, and we have him for life.” Even amongst adults, you can use the oral tradition to teach them. Isnt this what the Guru does in the East?2 Second + If you have no one to talk with - write it down. Write down as if you were talking with them. It does not matter if itis the form of essay or dissertation or letters. Keep on writing. It never hurts to record your tradition. I dont trust magnetic tape so I would not make tape recordings - you would need lots of back up copies. One day - someone would come along and read the work - your Ars Manga - and put them into practice. Your culture has been recorded and would then be replayed and come to life. Think of the example of the Living History folk and the SCA.:) Enjoy!

Why should we preserve our culture and rituals?

Of course, preserving cultures with their traditions and rituals is entirely voluntary, but there are several good reasons to do so. 1) Cultures is how we, as human beings, adapt to the world around us. Old cultures and their traditions are these adaptations preserved. Cultures also change over time as new conditions and new ideas come into the culture and the people adapt to the changes the face. Cultures are not stagnant things that never change, but living and adaptive systems. Old traditions carry artifacts of adaptations to conditions of the past that form the foundations for new changes in the future. 2) Cultures, traditions and rituals bind people together and allow them to act together in the face of adversity. Large modern states would like everyone to conform to the dominant culture and just, “fit in.” But large dominant cultures regularly push minority and non-mainstream groups to the fringes of society where they have no influence and power. This is usually because they are divided and the dominant culture either denigrates or ignores them. Cultures, traditions, and rituals bring minority people together because of their shared identity and common traditions. This can allow them to act together against being overrun and disregarded by the dominant culture. American Indian tribes have successfully used their common background to bring their people together to oppose U.S. government policies that harm them. They have not always been successful, but it is their common cultural background that allows them to work together and push back against the domination of mainstream American culture that has long sought to eliminate their culture and take everything they traditionally had away from them. 3) Different cultures have adapted to similar conditions in many different ways. As we move forward into the the future, the conditions we face as human beings are going to change. The population of the world is growing, the climate of the earth is changing, and we are going to have to change to adapt to the conditions that these changes produce. Different cultures have adapted to changing conditions in different ways in the past, and if those cultures, traditions, and rituals are preserved, they can tell us how other people in the past have adapted to changing conditions. These, in turn, can inform us about the possible ways that we can adapt as we move forward into the future, which is likely to offer us some difficult challenges.

What six reasons on why we should preserve our culture?

I always found the preservation of culture an obvious subject. Also, opinions such us the other answer by Jo Don are not very correct either since culture is a bond of space and time with the people of said culture. Now regarding the reasons, the most important ones, for me, are these. With culture you have a better understanding of how things came to be and why they are the way they are. That is a fact for every culture.Culture is a way of self-knowledge. With it you can figure out your individual identity, as a person of a total with a past, a present and a future. In a lot of cases, culture serves as a guide to the future. The accumulated knowledge of the past can help both the individual and the country to advance on the futureSince, history is a big part of culture, you also learn about the people or the groups that made sacrifices so you can be were you are today.Through that you can also understand the importance and the value of freedom, respect, peace and so on.Those are the reasons I can come up with, I hope my answer covered you.

How to save our culture , tradition and nature[flora and fauna] in this globalised world?

I'm currently working in a project that intends to promote coastal regions to go "Holistic and Sustainable", integrating their cultural, traditional and natural values, through a certification system, like an eco-label.

It's true a lot is achievable through the change in policies and through political willing, but people can also have a huge role in that process - local people can make the effort to be involved and participate in the community decisions, issues and problems - there are a few programs and tools, like AGENDA 21.

On the other hand, most municipalities (specially the tourist destinations) will start making the move to preserve their identity and nature when they realize tourists are starting to be sick of globalized, uniformized, amorphous places.

A lot can be done if people, individually and collectivelly, really care and bother. We can always blame the rulers and the others but each one of our actions is contributing to one side or the other.
