Why Were The United States At A Low Point Before The 1980 Olympics

What is the full roster of the 1980 olympic team?

Look at www.olympics.org you can find a history on each Olympic game, along with athletes.

Aren't only amateurs supposed compete in the Olympics?

At one point this was the idea, but it may surprise everybody here that actually Fencing was one of the few sports prior to the 1980's that allowed professionals as Baron Pierre de Coubertin , specifically stated that professional fencers called masters could compete in the 1896 Olympics.

By the 1980's everybody could see only amateurs could compete was a farce as the USSR , East Germany, Cuba and many of the other Eastern Bloc nations had pro amateurs with Katarina Witt being a perfect example. Other countries also created permanent Olympic athlete systems through the police or military that allowed athletes to train full time with out worry. In some cases governments also paid money to athletes to remain amateurs.

Professionals where allowed to start coming into the Olympics in the 1980's whether it was in Athletics with endorsement deals or the return of Tennis in 1988 after last being in the Olympics in 1924. The reason why Tennis was drooped after 1924 had to do with the fact that IOC couldn't agree on if Tennis was a true amateur sport or a pro sport since players begun to receive gifts and money was exchanged under the table with secret hand shakes. Steffi Graf won gold for the ladies singles.

Football (Soccer) was another sport that faced this dilemma as it was not in the 1932 Olympics over the debate of pros. In 1984 it was decided that professionals that didn't play in FIFA World Cup could participate. From 1952 till 1988 Eastern Bloc Communist nations dominated the Olympic Football tournament with only France 1984 (due to a boycott by the USSR and its allies) breaking this hold.

Lastly it should be noted that the Ancient Greeks had no such system of what a pro and amateur athlete was as this was a 19th century mostly Victorian Aristocratic notion that sports should be pure and money tainted them. In fact it is worth noting that Ancient Greeks gave out all sorts of material awards from the City States that those winning athletes represented. Athletes during the Ancient games fully expected to win a valuable or prestigious prize as this was an important part of being an athlete.

Why has New York never hosted the Summer Olympic Games?

Below is a list of U.S. cities that have bid to host the Summer Olympic Games. The years of their bids are also listed.  Los Angeles (9): 1924, 1928, 1932*, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1976, 1980, 1984*Detroit (7): 1944, 1952, 1956, 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972Chicago (4): 1904*, 1952, 1956, 2016Philadelphia (4): 1920, 1948, 1952, 1956Minneapolis (3): 1948, 1952, 1956Cleveland (2): 1920, 1916 Atlanta (2): 1920, 1996*Baltimore (1): 1948San Francisco (1): 1956St. Louis (1): 1904*New York City (1): 2012For NYC, it comes down to lack of effort. They only tried to host once.  But then again, first timers have hosted the games. Chicago/ St. Louis proved that. (Chicago won the 1904 Olympics, but it was moved to St. Lous).  I'm also not sure if effort matters. Detroit tried seven times and never got the Olympics, while Atlanta hosted once on just two attempts. Detroit has the unfortunate distinction of being the city with the most failed attempts at hosting the Olympics.

US Olympic Hockey Team?

I was wondering what this poster of Miracle on Ice said. I remember "the boy next door just discover america". anyone know the rest of what the posters says

Where were the pros for the 1980 olympic USA hockey team?

It is not true that it was all college players on the 1980 team. Team captain Mike Eruzione had played two seasons in the IHL, a now defunct minor league, when he was selected for the US team. For the purposes of the Olympics at that time, only players who had never played in the NHL or WHA were eligible.

What is your most memorable moment of the Summer Olympics?

Without doubt when Australia's Aboriginal girl Cathy Freeman won the 400 metres at the Sydney 2000 Games. I was there and it was the only final I paid for a top category ticket. the atmosphere tense with excitement as several tens of thousands fellow Aussies in the stadium waited and watched in trepidation for the run.

Can she do it? Can she overcome the pressure?

I know its a cliche but the atmosphere was truly electric . You could feel the "vibe".

The excitement as she flew around the track in her iconic green and gold jump suit. the joyous ecstasy as crossed the line FIRST.

The crowd really did erupt into rhapsody!

This is my all time personal highlight of any sporting event that I've ever attended.
