That's something to be asking the Social Security office. If they sent a payment to direct deposit and it bounced, you'll be getting a letter about it. If the bank accepted it even though you've been denied a permanent card, it might get a little more interesting. But your first stop should be the SSA to find out where they think it went.

Min, I couldn't even hazard a guess, it could be for any number of reasons, and I don't know why you wouldn't ask the entity from which you expect it instead of here. Find out from whoever does payroll or whatever you expect the direct deposit as a payment for.

Why is my direct deposit late?

Some banks will hold the money for a couple days before it gets put in your account. When I started working I was paid on a checking account associated with my company and received my money midnight Friday night. After switching to direct deposit with a different bank, I noticed I had not yet been paid on Saturday and after a customer service call learned that they had the money and it will show up in my account on Monday. So now I get paid every Monday morning. Different banks different policies

Why is my direct deposit paycheck delayed?

I use paypal prepaid card and a netspend card to get my paycheck every other week. My normal payday is on Fridays but I ALWAYS get paid on Wednesday afternoon by no later than 1:30pm even on holiday weeks. Neither paypal nor netspend holds checks they post as soon as they get them. My payroll was in on Monday and they processed as normal. It's now almost 4pm and I still haven't gotten paid. Is it because of Labor Day even though that stupid holiday was two days ago? Not sure how or why that's causing my paycheck to be delayed after the holiday is already over.....

Direct deposit?

In my experience, banks generally credit direct deposits as soon as they get them. That makes sense, because the work is all done by computers, no human hands involved, and delaying that action would be leaving balls in the air, ripe for misadventure.

That being said, the companies making direct deposits to your account may do it at the end of the day, at the start of the day, or in the middle of the day, depending on what else the data center has on their plate, and depending on their policy.

I know of a couple of companies that, by policy, they start their payroll direct deposit last thing in the day, the day before it's actually payday. That way, they have possession of the cash as long as possible, but employees never have to wait for their cash. This is interpreted a couple of different ways, though. At one company, if payday falls on Monday, they run the job late Sunday, and at another company, they run the job late Friday.

I'd check again at 10 AM, at noon, at 2 PM, at 4 PM, and at 6 PM. If it's not there by 6 PM, you probably won't see it until tomorrow. (All these times are based on where the company is located that's direct depositing to you. Sounds like you're in eastern time zone. If the company has their puters in California, adjust those times by 3 hours.)

Sometimes, but rarely,If you get paid Monthly or bi/Monthly and your payday comes on a weekend or Holiday the EFT will come on weekday before. If your Payroll/HR has a habit of transmitting payroll to the bank early it can sometimes come the day before. But Most do a EFT to the bank with a release date of X, so the EFT is at there bank, but the bank will not release the EFT’s to the system till that time/date.

Banks prefer direct deposit.First, the cost of an electronic transfer is low. The only costs are marginal electronic payment processing fees - several cents. They like an account that gets re-upped with funds on a regular basis. Direct deposit makes that much more likely to occur. Why - because transaction accounts earn revenue when the account holder spends money with a VISA/MC/AMEX. If you have money in your account, they benefit.Direct deposits are usually not a one-off event. Most often, most consumers receive a direct deposit for wages or needs-tested government benefits.

Does direct deposit go in early or late because of Labor Day?

The rule for ALL military pay is that if the military payday falls on a weekend or federal holiday, then the pay date is moved back to the first weekday. Example: since Monday, Sept 1, is Labor Day then the military payday would be moved back to Friday, Aug 29th.

If Friday were also a holiday then it would be moved back to Thursday. This is true of all federal holidays & military paydays.

My direct deposit did not go into my account when it should have?

It depends on why the money didn't go in.

I work in payroll for a large company. If we made the mistake, we cover the overdraft fees. I've seen a number of situations where an employee's timecards didn't get submitted in time, we processed them incorrectly, or some system glitch caused the direct deposit funds to bounce back to us and if an employee asked us to cover overdraft fees related to our screwup, we did.

If the company sent the funds on time but the bank delayed the processing, then you will have to take it up with the bank.

If the delay was due to an incorrect account number, that's on you unless you can show that you provided the correct info and your payroll department put it into their system wrong.

You had a reasonable expectation that your money would be deposited on a specific day. It is increasingly common for people to schedule direct debits and automatic payments from their checking accounts so it's not really an issue of you spending money you didn't have. You had earned your paycheck and it was supposed to be in your account on a certain day. Legally, it may depend on your state laws. However, to maintain employee relations, most companies will help you out with the fees. Were you the only one affected or did everyone's money go in late?
