Will A Doctors Note Stating I Cant Work 8 Hour Shifts Get Me Fired From My Job

Can you get fired for missing a day at work because of a death in the family?

I once fired a worker for this reason. It was a beautiful summer's day. The guy called me to say that he wouldn't be able to work the next day as his grandmother had just died and her funeral was the next day. Funerals don't generally happen that fast but I gave him the benefit of doubt. Two days later he came into to work on crutches with his leg in plaster to tell me he'd broken his leg and couldn't work for a few weeks. "What happened?", I asked. "We were at the swimming pool and I slipped and fell"."The funeral was held at the pool?""Funeral? Oh yes. No, this was afterwards. My grandmother loved swimming so the whole family went to the pool after the funeral to celebrate her life"."You all went to the pool after the funeral? Your whole family?","Yes","Andy?","Yes?","There was no funeral, was there?", "No. Should I look for another job?","Yes". Andy's brother was a friend of mine and was very impressed with this incredible show of intelligence.

Is it legal to prohibit employees to drink water during their shift at work?

It is not legal to prohibit employees from drinking water. According to govt. regulations regarding safety and ehalth at workplace, like OSHA for US and European Agency for Safety and Health at Work, potable water is one of the most basic rights of employees and employers cannot prohibit anyone from drinking water or taking water breaks. Instead, it is necessary to provide free and safe drinking water at all times and at all places in the workplace. Here's an excerpt from OSHA regarding water and sanitation: Frequently Asked QuestionsIn your case, why can't the ticket counter agents keep water bottles at their desks? This way they can hydrate themselves whenever required without leaving their desks and thus affecting their jobs.6 hours is too long to go without drinking water. You could get sued for prohibiting people from drinking water for so long, especially if someone has a medical condition. You can keep short water breaks in between, or better still, give water bottles to your employees.

Can your job MAKE you work 8 hour days/40 hours a week?

I am a new cashier for home depot. I was hired on as part time. But each week they are giving me 40 hours. I have issues with my back/neck and have been seeing a chiropractor for over a year. He gave me a note for work that stated i can only work a max of 6 hours a day and 30 hours a week. When i handed the note in my manager told me that the 6 hour shifts were fine EXCEPT on friday, saturday, and sunday. I still would have to work the 8 hour shifts on those days. Are they allowed to do this or do i need to speak with someone higher up? I mean it's gotten to the point where every day i have to fight not to cry because the pain is so bad (i do not take any medications). When i try talking about it they tell me i need better shoes... well i already have orthopedic shoe inserts that cost over $200 dollars. So i know it's not the shoes lol. I just don't know what to do. I don't want to quit or get myself fired because it took me about 6 months just to find this job..... any help would be great!! Thanks!!!!! :)

Ill be 20 weeks pregnant this week. Is this unfair of my job to do/say?

Im a 20 year old with a petite frame, and Im so happy about my pregnancy! What really gets me down is having to go to work. I work at Chickfila, fast food place and I stand on my feet for anywhere from 6 to 9 hours a day.

My managers have known that Ive been pregnant ever since I was around 10 weeks. They told me Im not allowed to push/lift any heavy things anymore and Im fine with that because I dont want to harm baby. But Im a tiny person and I havent gained that much weight until recently and my belly is getting bigger and its taking a toll on my back and legs to stand for such long periods of time! My thighs get so sore. I have been at work and gotten ligament pains as well and I would try to sit down whenever we are not busy and nothing needs to be done but then they tell me I cant sit! I tell them Im pregnant and my body is hurting but some team leaders reply back with 'this isnt a sit down job, etc.'

My husband got frustrated and so mad and called the manager and he told me I can only sit when Im about to faint and it can only be for about 5 minutes if I do... I dont get any extra breaks or anything. All the employees get a 15 minute break once a day but thats not enough for me... 15 minutes to sit out of 9 hours standing? Usually in that 15 minutes Im trying to get something to eat to heal my hunger pains so resting is the last thing on my mind.

I feel like Im being treated so unfair here, my body hurts so much the next day after working. Ive tried looking for a new job, I still am but as for now Im stuck here. I need the money :( Do you think theyre treating me poorly? How do I handle this?

Can my employer keep me from sitting during five straight hours of work (or longer)?

I work at a cinema, in the front cabin selling the tickets for the movies, so my job is being in a computer all day long. The thing is that when i asked one of my boss why we could not work from the chairs that we have there aside our desk she told me that a few years before they were permitted but since the new boss came to work there she clearly stated that she did not wanted any of us to use the chairs! I asked why we could not but in other of our cinemas employes ARE allowed to work seatted, and she told me: "Because she is the boss here, not there" and that she has the right to make the "regulations" she wanted because she is the boss.

Can my employee take time off work due to tiredness?

EDIT:

Thanks for all the replies and help. I made a mistake in not providing more details.

My business is a restaurant and the employee is a waiter.

Firstly, this employee's performance has been below standard in many respects for the last year. He is uncooperative with his colleagues. Has a bad temper. Verbally abuses fellow colleagues. Rude attitude to his superiors. Has created a very unfriendly environment with the other employees.

He already received one written warning 8 months ago. A second one was supposed to be given three months ago due to unauthorised absence but still has yet to be issued (but probably too late now).

With this occasion, he had already planned to take the time off and mentioned it to another employee, but failed to notify the company. It wasn't until when the management asked the other employees that someone brought this to light. His intent is unknown.

So what would be the best course of action to take? Thanks again for all the advice!
