Will A Jeep Grand Cherokee Front Differential Work In My 89 Jeep Cherokee And Still Work With 4x4

What is the purpose of the switch on my 1989 Jeep cherokee 4x4 that says power/comfort for the transmission? ?

The power/comfort switch changes the shift points in your transmission. It also changes how hard it shifts. Some people, very few, have noticed a slight increase in fuel economy with the power switch on, but that may be due to driver input more than anything else. My '91 had it as well and I kept it in power all the time. It drove better.

Do it while stopped or gently rolling. You can do it in drive as long as you are creeping along. Sometimes though with age you'll find you have to do it either stopped and in neutral or rolling, just because of normal wear on dated vehicles.

Will jeep rims fit a ranger?

Yep they will.. they have the same 5 x 4.5" bolt pattern. The hub holes are slightly different but that can be cured by taking a file and opening up the hole a bit.

The Jeep wheel hub hole is 71.5mm, the Ford hub hole is 70.3mm.

So if you are putting Jeep wheels on a Ford it should fit fine. But Ford wheels on Jeep will require opening the hole up.

Sean is right... except for the CJ. It used a 5x5.5" bolt pattern.

What years jeep cherokee parts will fit 96 grand cherokee laredo 4x4?

It all depends on what you are trying to change? All in all not
many parts of a Cherokee will fit a Grand Cherokee.

For instance the transmissions are different. The Cherokee auto
is a AW4 Aisin Warner were the Grand Cherokee has either the
42RE or 46RE trans.
The rear end on the Cherokee is usually the Chrysler 8.25 were the
Grand is either a Dana 35 or Dana 44. The front axle housings are
different also.
None of the body parts, lights, interior parts are going to be
interchangeable on the 2 vechicles.

Are you looking for a parts car to use for parts for the Grand Cherokee
then I suggest you find a Grand Cherokee for parts.

Thngs such as rims would be interchangable, front brake parts and so
on. Rear brake parts would not be interchangable as most Grands
had rotors and pads in the rear and all Cherokees had drum brakes.

So all in all it depends on what you want to swap. The motors if both
had a 4.0L in it would be interchangable.

Need more info. about what you are trying to swap?? Also like I said
if you are trying to find a parts car to use for parts for the Grand getting
a Cherokee is not worth it.

How much should a front end alignment cost?

I work for Sears automotive. I do alignments all day long. We charge 65$ for a 4 wheel alignment with a free suspension check. The only proper way to do an alignment is a 4 wheel kind. Toe out is rare if you havent been in any accidents with the car. It also happens from careless install of new parts. The 4 wheel alignment makes sure the car travels down the road as it should. 2 wheel alignments dont take into account the direction of the rear axle offset and can result in the car going somewhat sideways down the road. Called dogtracking. Avoid the dealership at all costs as they dont perform alignments very well. Ask to see a printout of your car's before and after specs so that you dont get ripped off. A competent shop will have complete specs for you. You can also watch the tech at Sears do the alignment as long as you dont mind wearing safety glasses. It only takes about 1 hour for most cars. A bit longer for some dodges (intrepids and the like) cause they are poorly designed up front.

If I took off the catalytic converter, will it make my fuel get better mileage?

Don't listen to the naysayers. A engine is a pump, anything you do to increase pump efficiency, is going to increase gas mileage. A new cat will not rais fuel consumption much, But if it has over 100,000 miles on it, You will see a marked increase or “restoration” of gas milage. This is especially true of cars with a secondary air pump. They are not exactly filtering the air, before its pumped into you exhaust. This is what gets fun. If you reprogram, or modify the O2 sensors signal to bring the engine to stylometric fuel ratio or just less, you will get a 5–10% increase in gas milage. This trick really shines in stop and go traffic. If you analyse the wave form of the upstream O2 sensors, you will notice it spends a lot more time rich, than lean. You are sitting at red lights feeding that Fat Cat, so it can make more smoke. All cars are set up to fuel that catalytic convert. This keeps them hot and working. Without extra fuel pumped thru the engine, that cat has nothing to do, cools down, and slowly plugs up. To bad your cat will plug up if you lean out the engine. Hint, Hint……….

Auto Repair: How long should brake service normally take?

There is also the issue of skill. Some shops have newer guys do simpler jobs, like maintenance. So it's also very likely the guy was having some trouble. Even at an independent shop 2 hours was about the tops for 4 wheel brake job. We'd order the parts and take it all apart, if machining needed to be done get it started and move to something else.  By time the parts arrived you'd hopefully be able to put some stuff together. You check the parts and if they're right, get it together, if they're wrong you get new parts ordered. The worst I ever had was a brake job that came in around 2, checked it and needed front pads, rotors, and rear drums and shoes. Took it apart and moved on. Checked parts when they came... the rears were all wrong. It was 4 already because delivery gets busy near the end of the day. Assembled fronts and waited until 530 to get rears again. Made sure they were right, gave old ones as exchange and put rears together. It was almost 6. Got the car ready for a brake flush(also sold), performed the flush and let the writer know. It was almost 615 and the customer waited the entire time, needing to get to class. That was the worst.Typically it's 40 minutes in a dealer setting for all 4 without machining, about 60 with. You check them, get parts, and assemble. That's it. Machining is typically very easy if you know what you're doing and you get started ASAP so you can work and machine. In a smaller shop you can hear when they're finished to remind you about them. If you forget though nothing happens and time is wasted. So what you want to do is not wait for your car to be done if you can. Let the shop worry about issues and you can get on with it. If you're on a tight schedule and need the car consider returning when you have more time, brakes very rarely need to be done immediately, as it is with most vehicle repairs.

When did jeep stop using carburetors?

The last carburetor was used mid 80's, around 84/85. Jeep then went to using TBI (throttle body injection) which is kind of like a carburetor/multi-port injection hybrid. The late 80's/early 90's saw the complete switch over to multi-port from TBI. Hope this helps.

What's The Difference between 4x2 and 2x4?

2x4 and 4x2 is basically the same meaning only 2 tires power the car (front or back) (if u want to get technical only 1 tire powers the car in 2x4 and only 2 tires power the car in 4x4 unless u have lockers or a locking limited slip) . 4x4 can mean part time or full time depending on the car my jeeps part time but still has the 4x4 on the side

Will too much transmission fluid cause it to not shift?

Depends on what “too much” means. Automatic transmissions already take a large volume of oil. If you checked you transmission fluid first thing in the morning without starting your engine, you would find it way overfilled. Truth be told, that is the time to have the oil so overful. As soon as you start the engine, the transmission begins filling the torque convertor and all the passages in the valve body and case. Check the fluid now(in either park or neutral depending on manufacturer) and it will likely be a half quart low due to the fluid being cold. Once transmission is up to normal temps that half quart low is now right on the full mark. You would need to be quarts over full before it created an issue. Almost impossible to happen. Because it registers so far over full when checked without engine running, someone putting many quarts beyond full is highly unlikely to even happen. A quart over won't hurt anything.Quick way to remove a quart or litre is to open the return cooler line and drain a quart or litre. If you choose to run the engine to speed it up, it won't take much more that 10 seconds.
