Will Adding Water Help Reduce Salt Content In Soup Or Juice

What is the best way to reduce salt if we've accidentally put more salt in our food?

Well because of a recent CHF, I’ve had to reduce my sodium intake. So I can directly address some strategies regarding food and salt. The biggest recommendation is to reduce eating out. Period. Restaurants, ready-to-eat foods, and fast food places make their foods taste better with “seasonings.” Those seasonings are primarily salt. Some restaurants will try to accommodate you by cooking to order. Many of them cannot because of the pre-prepared ingredients. If you cannot eat out, then the only alternative is to cook for yourself, right? That makes it easy. Don’t put salt into your food. And when you buy food, buy no-salt-added ingredients. Tomato sauce, for example, usually comes in salt and no-salt versions. If you cook your dishes yourself, you can control how much salt makes it into your food. But, you say, when you do that the food tastes soooo bland. You do not have to eliminate the salt, you could reduce it. But if your goal is to eliminate it here are some good (but not perfect) alternatives:Balsamic vinegar. My favorite substitute. I use extra vecchio, 25-year aged Modena balsamic. Use it on pork chops instead of salt and you’ll find it is just as delicious.Lemon juice. Especially on fish and chicken dishes. It adds flavor that tends to replace the saltiness that you miss.Sugar. The idea here is to replace saltiness with sweetness (and hopefully you’re not diabetic too). For pork ribs and roasts, replacing salt with sugar works really well.No-salt seasoning like Mrs. Dash. They do all the hard work for you making a blend of seasonings that tastes pretty good and contain no saltAs a salt-conscious person, let me add one more comment. There really is no ideal substitute for salt. The best you can hope for is compromise.

Does adding water to a drink or food lower the calories, sugar & other nutritional content?

It depends how you go about this. If you take a can of something, let’s say you have a 250ml can of soda. You pour that into a glass and add 250ml of water. At the end of the day you are consuming 500ml of liquid, but still getting all the calories, sugar, etc, in the 250ml can of soda. It might take you 5 minutes to drink all of it rather than 2 minutes, but you’re still consuming the same amount of nutritional value. But let’s add some more variables. Maybe, throughout a period of time you drink half a liter of liquid. Now, instead of consuming 2x250ml cans of soda, you have only consumed a single 250ml can of soda and replaced the other 250ml with water. Overall, you have reduced your calorie intake.Looking at this another way… let’s say during an afternoon you usually drink 1 liter of liquid. You usually opt to drink 1 liter of soda. Now, you decide to dilute every glass 1/2 soda and 1/2 water, and you still consume 1 liter of liquid. Again, you have reduced your overall calorie intake by half while consuming the same amount of liquid.

Hi Sangeeta,I answer so many questions on requests made here everyday. But, your question is more a stress buster to me. Coriander wow… Lemon another wow…Let me first tell you that yes! These foods do help you in weight loss. How?Coriander is the best natural chelating agent. Chelating agent means it is the best thing that cleanses the body of heavy metals and toxins. There is probably no better cleanser than coriander.Coriander is also a rich source of magnesium. It also contains a good quantity of Vitamin B especially folic acid. You must be thinking why am I giving you all these descriptions when you asked about weight loss. Actually all these things are very essential for proper burning of glucose. The energy molecule of the body cannot be made unless magnesium is available to be attached with it. Therefore for the energy to burn (glucose) magnesium is absolutely important. It has also been seen that when you start burning the glucose, reactive oxygen species are produced which needs to be quenched. This function is done by anti oxidants. Coriander is a great source.Similarly, Lemon. Some of my patients take up to 25 lemons per day for a few days depending on their condition. It is just amazing.
