Jim Herd firing Ric Flair when he was champion without realizing that they had no claim to Flair’s “real world championship” was epically stupid. Flair’s showing up on WWF TV with the belt was a really bad look for WCW.Eric Bischoff’s spending habits were a major problem. He dispensed a bunch of overpriced contracts, which eventually couldn’t be maintained by an underperforming product. Bret Hart was making $1 million per year in WWF, but Bischoff threw about $3 million at him. He would also do things like buy a new leather jacket in every city.While Bischoff did make the company profitable for a while, he lacked the long term vision to keep it profitable. After the AOL/Time Warner merger, those contracts looked like a sign of gross financial mismanagment. Near the end, many of the wrestlers treated the company as nothing more than a giant ATM. Some of them were even selling WCW merchandise on Ebay! Many gave zero cares.The product turn a turn for the worse once Vince Russo took over booking. He dropped a WWF blueprint on a company that people watched as an alternative. WCW had provided a great wrestling product, but when talented stars like Jericho, Benoit, Guerrero, and Malenko headed to WWF it lost some of that spirit. Then there was just a bunch of goofy garbage like General Hugh G. Rection, G.I. Bro., That 70’s Guy, and so much more. Russo didn’t like that Standards & Practices was telling him what he couldn’t do, so he created a team called Standards & Practices. He put the World Championship on himself and David Arquette. The title held by so many of the greats like Flair, Dusty, Sting, Race, and even Hogan was completely devalued.It was just a slap in the face to many of the older fans, who never came back. Had Russo taken the product back to a 5 or 6 rating, they may have been able to weed out some of the more expensive contracts, but it was not to be.
